Detroit Lions Training Camp: Jahvid Best Returns To Practice
- Don't forget: Thursday's practice at 11:15 a.m. is the final session that is open to the public this year.
- Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best returned to practice today. This was his first day of practice since he suffered an apparent concussion against the Cleveland Browns last Friday. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said yesterday that Best was cleared to practice, and he got back on the field today.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch did not return to practice. Both were sidelined again due to shoulder injuries.
- Wide receiver Titus Young was once again able to practice for the Lions. He isn't sure if he will play on Saturday against the New England Patriots, but by all accounts he really wants to make his preseason debut for the Lions. Of course, if the coaches don't feel like he's ready, there's no point in rushing him back for a preseason game, so it will ultimately be their call.
- Wide receiver Rashied Davis and offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus were back today after getting Tuesday off.
- Cornerback Alphonso Smith did not practice, although it sure seems like he is getting close to making his 2011 practice debut.

GREAT Article on Roy "the dropsies" Williams
On a sidenote: I’m sooooooooo glad to get rid of that POS by the name of B. Johnson!

I'd like to see Titus
runs a few routes (not in extensively). Just insert him in on appropriate 3 or 4 WR sets…Maybe have him run some underneath routes (flat, slant, comeback) to ease him in and get him a catch or two…just for the self-confidence factor and everything. Plus I think NE should be attacked at their safety, nickel, and dime positions. Think about how good/the possibilities of our 4 wide set should be with Scheffler as the TE!? (Nothing against Grew, I’m just thinking of using Scheff down the seam and Titus on a skinny post to stretch the field – and something like CJ on a dig, Burl and Davis running underneath with Best as our check down -after chipping…). NO WAY – if given the time – Stafford doesn’t carve up Defenses with scenarios such as these!

I was at practice again today.
And Titus was running routes with both the #1’s and 2’s. They did a nice session of 11 on 11 drills without any pads. And Titus looked pretty good, had one nice catch from Stafford on a Slant.
Also, Ballard was back to full practice, and looked pretty good in Calvin’s absence.

Glad that Titus is getting better.
After having so many injuries to start, I think things are looking up minus having Leshoure out for the entire year. I hope we put in Titus for maybe a drive or 2 against NE but I’m ok with them not playing him either, whatever the coaches think is best for him. Not too concerned about KVB and Megatron. They’ll be fine.
Go Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons and Sparty
CJ81, and KVB were both dressed (Jersey and Shorts) and active in the whole practice. Interestingly enough, KVB had a clipboard in his hand for most of the 11 on 11 drills, and was working with DEF players in between plays.

On Stafford
He’s a little more vocal, he’s a little more controlled," receiver Nate Burleson said. “He is making a few more plays on his own. He is changing things at the line of scrimmage. He has really matured as a quarterback. I don’t know if (offensive coordinator Scott Linehan) has taken the leash off, but right now he is out there performing and leading the offense as if he’s been in the league longer than he has been.”

About Felton's chances
but no, really- I love the thought of more Heller at H back!
Now in his 10th season, Heller is giving the position a go-round again. Officially the Lions’ third-string tight end, Heller has taken snaps as the lead blocker in a two-back set just about every practice this training camp.
“We call it the ‘F’ position,” offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "It’s basically an H-back, but sometimes it’s a fullback, sometimes it’s a pass protector, sometimes it’s a free-release pass receiver.
“It’s kind of a universal position, and he plays it from the standpoint that we want to get a little bit bigger matchup-wise in the run game, whether we use him on the line, off the ball, move him. His knowledge of football allows him to do that.”

no kidding
dude is as heavy (275) as Cullbreath played throughout college! Only concern with Heller as FB is his height works against his leverage. Unfortunaltey for us, Felton also isn’t leveragly gifted…urg
Heller is a great sealer though and you can get creative in your blocking schemes with him in there.

or wait, maybe I was thinking of Tyron Smith

hahah either way like you said hes 275 and quite tall, and from the sounds of it has been working his balls off to make this team. I say a player with his profile is ready to become a scary asset to an already scary team.I really hope they keep him and use him fairly often through this season.Obviously i would take him over felton.
I don't think there was ever any doubt that Heller would make the team.
Its just a bonus he can do Felton’s job better than Felton. I’ve been screaming the praise of Heller for years now. He epitomizes the kind of players I want the Lions to have: smart, versatile, physical and consistent. If players got points for being consistent in fantasy football, Heller and Backus would go 1 and 2 in the draft.
It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

It does make a very interesting situation.
Heller playing F, Felton’s roster spot for extra WR or CB?
or
Lions in a 3 TE set, keep Felton and make some tough cuts on WR and CBs
Its exciting isn’t it?

Then again.
I’m probably just staring at Mayhew’s waving hand while he’s pulling real magic with the other. Either way, the prospect of tough cuts for the first time in a long time is very exciting to me.

I have already come to peace with the notion that I will be scratching my head over some of the cuts.
Me too.
Its simply amazing to me that after so many years of watching, our team finally has something we haven’t in a long time. Something I thought we had previously, but now I know for sure we didn’t. That thing: options. We finally have options. The opportunity to make tough cuts. We can finally be surprised and I can’t wait.

I agree with the Heller for Felton move.
If all their going to use that spot is for a lead blocker and maybe a touch or two, forget it, cut Felton and keep the extra TE.
.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?
Felton's on his rookie contract
he makes less. But there’s not that big of a difference really.

I'd like to see the Lions try to get Felton the ball more in open space
A draw or a screen or something. That one run he had he looked really fast for a guy his size. We really don’t have a bruising runner besides him.
