Hilliard at guard b/c run game SUCKS.

Despite being 2-0 in the preseason (which we know doesn’t mean much), the running game has been horrible. We know the O-Line has taken criticism, especially for being under-sized. It has shown in the run game, so moving a larger body from tackle to guard could help get rid of the horrible rushing average.

That is true

It also appears the Lions are getting serious about a replacement for Raiola as well. We now have four guys in camp to compete with Raiola for the center job.

Probably

But still, at least management is taking steps to solidify the problem going forward…I’d be more worried if they didn’t do anything. I think we all know the only two players that are going to be on this line 5 years from now are possibly Sims and Cherilus. So it’s nice to see the coaches shaking it up a bit, or at least giving the perception that they are willing to this year.

by JFisch on Aug 25, 2011 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Too much shuffling of the O-line can be really bad.

Look at what happened in Chicago last year.

I know the line isn’t the best it could be but they played well enough together last year to keep us in games. If someone down the depth charts out and out beats Peterman and Raiola it’s one thing. But if we’re talking small degrees of difference I’d rather go with the group that’s played together and take my lumps until the next draft.

Face it, none of the O-liners on the roster are world-beaters.

by drgarnett on Aug 25, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Just for s#*ts and giggles...

what about possibly moving Sims to RG, Backus to LG and Fox at LT after Fox gets healthy again? Backus had offered to move to a different position on the line before if the Lions wanted to draft a different LT, so why not try it and see if it works? It would obviously depend on the length of Fox’s injury and how well he comes back, Backus is probably our best bet at LT, but you never know unless you try :)

by silver_rush on Aug 24, 2011 11:42 PM EDT reply actions

I have never been a big proponent of moveing starters around like that

Each offensive line position has a different focus. Traditionally, you try to have great run blocking on the right side of the line and decent pass blocking. On the left you put more emphasis on pass blocking over run blocking. But that is not how the Lions shake out. Last season, Backus was the best run blocker on the team. But that doesn’t necessarily make him better as a right guard. If anything, he would be a great right tackle since his main problem is the speed rush and you usually see less of that on the right side. But Backus has been on the left for so long, I don’t know if he will be able to easily adjust his footwork to the right side.

The Dis-Assembly Line - The unofficial, official name for the next best D-line in football.

Some very interesting quotes
“Last year, we didn’t complement the defensive line well enough here on the back end,” said Levy, who has made a seamless transition from middle linebacker to the outside this season. “That was on all of us, all the way back to the safeties. So it’s been a big emphasis this year on us getting downhill and getting those blockers off them guys.”

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110825/SPORTS0101/108250342/New-Lions-Stephen-Tulloch—Justin-Durant-bring-legitimacy#ixzz1W16jW7Yj
Levy said the trust factor works both ways.

“We are going to stick with the same things we’ve been doing, but we have more flexibility to move around and show different looks,” he said. “We trust everybody to know their assignments so we can kind of play around and mess around (before the snap), trusting that we will get back to where we are supposed to be.”

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110825/SPORTS0101/108250342/New-Lions-Stephen-Tulloch—Justin-Durant-bring-legitimacy#ixzz1W16jW7Yj

With the way Gun has our safeties moving around and Kokurek has the Dline shifting at times…add in more movement by the Lbs…this is some exciting football boys! I think there’s a very interesting dynamic to this defense with how the LBs compliment the Dline and the degree of creativity given the front 7…It’s SOOOO different than Rod’s “man your gap with proper pad level” stuff (though I know that works with the right guys) – that is so stiff, and predictible. I think our team is much more of a new bread (ala Pats and Ravens)…

I just read that DetNews article.

I’m not trying to be a negative Nancy here, but what exactly have they done in the 1st two exhibition games to instill any confidence that their a top notch LB’er unit?

Sure past performance is one thing, but IMO they have looked pretty ordinary and actually rather exposed in stopping the run game.
I realize it’s early yet and no big deal, but are they worth an article like that at this time? I think it strikes of homerism and blowing smoke up the masses asses.

And I’ll stick by what I said with the Tulloch signing from what I’ve seen out of him so far. For 3.25 mil it was a good signing, but SO FAR from what I’ve seen on the field from him, he’s doing just what I expected. The guy does not make plays, and pads his tackling stats 7 yards downfield.

It’s early, and I’ll be watching for improvement.

I already posted this for you, but here it is again:

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/daryl-smiths-year-defeats

Only one 4-3 MLB had more defeats that Tulloch last year, and that was Urlacher. A defeat is any play (tackle, assist, pass defensed, interception, or forced fumble) that causes a turnove, causes a loss of yardage, or stops a copnversion on third or fourth down.

Those aren’t “stat padder” plays, those are big plays, and Tulloch made more of them than just about anyone at his position. The actual data doesn’t match up to your impression at all.

And true, the very first game against Cincy they looked shakey, but then they went out and lowered the boom on Cleveland’s run game. They’ll be fine, and they’ll sure as shit be better than last year. None of the three starters at LB week one last year are even playing professional football this year.

Come on Bro, you are smarter than that. 2 weeks of being together isn’t enough time to get everyone on the same page. and Durant has been flying around in both games, Tulloch showed more in the last game that the first, but what I’m concerned with is the fact we have not seen Levy make any plays so far.

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Aug 25, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that

I certainly expect much better play in the regular season. I’m a little surprised it hasn’t been a little better – though if you look at the stats from when all the 1s have been in, it’s not bad. The Pat fans said they expect NE to run a lot (sort out their RB depth situation) and they have a pretty good oline, so I think how we do in this preseason game should be much more telling than any of the other are/will be…Vets don’t always show up for most preseason games…sad but true (not that I’m saying Durant and Tulloch aren’t playing hard or anything, I’m just saying – a lot of vets have an extra gear of toughness and focus when the games count…).

From the reports out of camp, I get the impression that they’re still feeling each other out – and with the whole splitting the play calling/communication between Levy and Tulloch, I have to believe they’re still in a transition phase right now. Reports also say that they look much better together in the past week or so – but you could rightfully conclude there is some homerism in assuming these vets will translate and make our D that much better – I mean, what can you really trust from Gun’s mouth when he gives praise anyhow!?

While Tully has played in this type of defense before, Gun’s terminology is a little different and I’m sure he and Durant are still feeling out how the Dline improvises (it’s got to be something a little difficult to get used to if you come from more of a disciplined gap system – like most defenses). I’m thinking about it much like an RB needs to get a feel for the blocking tendencies of his lineman – how they like to pull etc.

BUT, at the end of the day, Tully and Durant are vets and should be up to speed by the opener. If Blount runs us over, I will begin my worries (though I wouldn’t mail our chances at a decent run defense in from one game obviously).

The Dis-Assembly Line - The unofficial, official name for the next best D-line in football.

by rames on Aug 25, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

There was an article about a week back in one of the Detroit papers about Durant and the transition he has to make.

He basically set that in the defense, he has no real gap assignment, but just goes where Suh doesn’t go, and that he has no idea what Suh is going to do at the snap or during the course of the paly.

He said it’s been an adjustment to get used to learbing what Suh is doing/capable of doing and putting himself in the best position to react to it.

I think that explains a lot of why Benson ran wild right at Suh/Durant.

by AJSmitty on Aug 25, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL

You know, I’ve been sitting here racking my brain as to just what is it about Tulloch’s game that is bothering me. Something bugs me with how I think he plays.

And believe me at this point in no way, shape, or form am I saying I’m correct. this is just for conversation sake.

Why in my mind does it appear to me that he sits back and waits for the play to come to him? IMO only, it appears to me that he’s never attacking the ball, never upon never gets into the backfield to make a stop, doesn’t appear to come up for anything.

There’s obviously no denying that he makes tackles, but how many are push outs on outside runs which adds to how I view his game? The couple I did see of him making last week were just plain jane touches with off balance ball carriers.

.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?

by delusional on Aug 25, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That is a god point Del

but I have not seen any of our LB’s in the backfield as of yet. I think Gunny is calling a vanilla game on the D side of the ball so far as to not tip our hand. we have not seen hardly any blitzing, and hardly any 8 man in the box to stop the run.All I’ve seen is vanilla D with the back 7 playing in area’s and the front 4 trying to get the pressure by themselves.

Everyone do me a favor when watching this next game....please.

Watch Tulloch and how and where he’s making his tackles. Could of he attacked the ball carrier and didn’t, while making an easier tackle giving up a needless extra few yards. I swear I could be incorrect and want other opinions. And not just because it’s just preseason, that’s his game IMO.

I just think historically he sits back on plays and does not attack, which looks good in the number of tackles he makes. I completely agree it’s too early to judge how their playing as a unit.

Theres no chemistry on the first team, yet

2nd team gets in and they play as a unit. My guess is 1st team has been been getting their asses chewed off about them not getting proper drops in pass coverage. Between overcompensating for that and what I see as obviously slow recognition about where the play is going is causing them to just disappear into the thundering herd.

Will do

I don’t think you’re off on that. But I haven’t specifically watched for it either.

I mean, I’d love to have Tully play like Urlacher – but if he merely cleans up a yard or two in front of the LOS (not more than 3 yards) AND both Levy and Durant are actively getting downhill in a hurry to get in the backfield (and/or get blockers off of or Dline so they can make plays)- then I’m probably not going to gripe much.

I’d say the thing that pissed me off the most last year was seeing LBs just get blocked out of the play and RBs running right past them (or through weak arm tackles). I’m not saying I’d be totally happy with a mediocre run defense or anything – I want to be top5 ideally, but we NEED the LBs to prevent the RBs from getting to the secondary (though Delmas and Spievey will continue being sweet in this area IMO).

It's funny you made this comparison rames
Tully play like Urlacher

Because when I was trying to formulate just what exactly was bugging me about Tulloch’s game, I kept picturing Urlacher’s style of play in my head.

Now, if it’s scheme that’s keeping Tulloch from attacking that’s what I want to find out, and maybe I’m overestimating just how much past the los Tulluch is making his tackles.

I don’t know how much time I’m going to have to break this game down. I work Saturday night, then I’m heading out of town early Sunday. I’m going to try to break down at least the starters time on the field though as long as I’m home at a decent hour Saturday.

So if Tulloch happens to play his ass off Saturday, I’m not hiding out, I’m gone.

I have watched Brian for years in Chicago's D

And here is 1 very big difference’s between the 2 styles of D. In our D, the front 4 never and I mean NEVER do line plays. were the entire D drives to 1 side like in Madden you can have the D-line all go left or right so that the LB’s can clean up RB’s with no blockers, like they have been doing for years in Chicago. Our D-line is about containing and forming a so called bubble with the DT’s collapsing the pocket, you just don’t see Chicago do that all that much except on early downs. But when it’s a running down like say on a 2nd and 5 or something, you see the Bears D-line do a lot of slanting so that all 3 of the LB’s are basically free’d up to do what ever they want to. Watching that Bears/Giants game on Monday night, and the Bears must have ran that play about 50% of the time in running situations.

the type of reason why Chicago’s offense will continue to be inefficient. There will be too many incompleted passes and INTs because of the pass rush and having WRs not on the same page or having balls go through their hands (how often did Roy cause a turnover!?!?) Add Cutler’s propensity to throw AT/TO CBs instead of his WRs..we get to watch some fun ensue!

Roy frickin Williams

So many bad memories of this guy. I remember him making the occasional great one handed grab then turning around and dropping a ball right in his hands. Then he’d walk off the field laughing about the drop. He’d give the 1st down sign, like an idiot, after doing nothing in a game that we were down by four touchdowns after 3 and a half quarters. Or the time when he explained that he doesn’t tip waitresses. After flaking out here he gets shipped to Dallas, plays like a bum and gets beat out by Miles Austin and now he walks into Chicago, gets handed the top WR spot on a silver platter and starts talking about how he needs to get into running shape. Man the guy is such a douche.
