Detroit Lions Training Camp Comes To A Close
- Today's practice marked the close of Detroit Lions training camp. Practice will obviously continue as the Lions close out the preseason and get ready for the regular season, but the training camp portion of the summer is now technically over.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson returned to practice after missing a couple days with a sore shoulder.
- Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who also has a sore shoulder, was out once again.
- Running back Jahvid Best and wide receiver Titus Young were able to practice again.
- Cornerback Alphonso Smith was not able to make his 2011 practice debut. This means he is still on the active/non-football injury list.
- According to Tom Leyden, defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock received a challenge from Lions coaches to catch a punt from Nick Harris. As you might expect considering he's a defensive tackle, Pitcock didn't make the catch, and the team got a kick (no pun intended) out of it.
- The CBS broadcast crew of Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf and Lesley Visser attended practice to prepare for Saturday's game.

This weekend
I think everyone is gearing up for this matchup against New England. I feel it will be a good gauge on how we are doing. I just don’t want any of the guys that have been hurt recently (Young, Best, Calvin) to really push it too much and miss regular season time. No matter what the implications of the game might be, it is still a preseason game.
If you are pondering, "What am I supposed to do" think the EXACT OPPOSITE thing as Matt Millen is thinking.
This is a meaningless Game
I hope this game does get hyped as important because it isn’t. The only meaninful upcoming game is the one in 3 weeks against Tampa Bay. I would hate to lose any of our key players to injury because there is a feeling of importance to this game.
Alex Karras to the HoF.
I agree to a point
But this game is typically the most active of the pre-season, it’s important to see how we match up against the Pats in my eyes.

I dunno...
It’s meaningfull in the sense that guys trying to make the team or get attention from other teams have a chance to do so. Like the Lions, the Pats have been playing alot of their 2nd and 3rd teamers and bubble or fringe players and blowing them out. So are they well coached or does NE have just that much depth? Or maybe a lil of both? Me personally I’d just like the Leo’s to play them tough and most definately send a message.
I almost got happy that we have real anouncers for the game
than I thought about it, they are there to promote the Pat’s. Well at least Dan the Man Dierdorf was a Wolverine, so we will get some love from him. And for an old girl Lesley still looks good.
How many lumps you want Doc?
And if we shit on ouselves on national tv again....
Were going to lose all of the love we’ve been getting nationally, not from the talking head aholes, but from the diehard football fans that understand just how far we have come.
The old Lions suck jokes will be dusted off.

is there any reason for concern re: KVB?
dude’s been out all week right? surprised there’s minimal panic. I suppose all will be fine.
With our depth?
Not too worried. He could miss the first half of the season for all I care.*
Besides, after he retires I’m hoping he’ll get a coaching job with us.
(* – I mean, I’d care, but we’d still be fine.)
there's nothing to be worried about
if anything counted right now, KVB would be out there – 100% on that!
