Roger Goodell Judge Jury and Target

Been thinking about this alot lately. Everyone wants to make Goodell the bad guy. The man who the owners named comish of the NFL and told him perserve the image. Is he really judge jury and excutioner? Is really just a marshmallow in a suit ? I dunno I can honestly say his job isn't easy. Step away and forget about fining Suh and the tampering charges and look at this list.

Star-divide

Kenny Britt - 7 encounters with the law in just 2 years as a pro.

Aqib Talib - Multiple encounters with the law and assult charges

Ben Rothelisberger served 5 game suspenion from (Accused) Twice of sexual assult

Mike Vick - Federal Prison time for dog fighting

Donte Stallworth - Vehicular Manslaughter

Terrell Pryor - Serving a 5 game suspension for NCAA violations*

Adam Jones- Multiple assult charges including a strip club and personal body gaurd

Albert Haynesworth - Well he's still Albert Haynesworth

Plaxico Buress - Discharging an illeagal fire arm in a public place ( his leg)

Kenny Britt and Talib most recently talked with the comish sounds like it wasn't to harsh either. Big ben is still the "franchise" of the Steelers after missing only 5 games. Mike Vick and Stallworth were both allowed to return to the NFL. Adam Jones was given multiple second chances to redeem himself after being the running joke of the NFL. Haynesworth is still around and still causing trouble off the field. Plaxico has returned with ZERO punishment by the league. For Pryor I do like this call the NFL should not be a safe haven for college players who screw up this bad.

Roger has had some serious players cause some serious problems the last few years. It is a privilage to play in the NFL NOT a right. If you had a job in the front office of any of the 32 teams and you were under trial for sexual assault, manslaughter, or dog fighting YOU'D BE GONE!  The more I have thought about it Roger isn't that big of a hardass some of these guys are getting off scott free. Kenny Britt needs an ass whoppin. While I am glad players like Vick got there second chance and are acually making good on it. Players like Pacman need a 2 strikes and get the hell off my field policy. Sure the game has gotten softer the fines and penaltys are abundunt these days but can you blame Goodell soley on the rules commishon? The Refs ? I dunno seems to me he has become a target for everything the fans dislike. If we had a Commish that was a door mat ( see predicessor ) The players will run wild and the NFL image. buisness and everyone involved would be destroyed.

Yes he does deserve blame for alot of things but the next time you scream DAMN GOODELL!!! Stop and think was this his fault ? At some point somewere in time players have to be considered adults. They also have to be held responsible and what it all boils down to is atleast Roger is holding the children responsible. For every great thing Peyton Manning and Drew Brees has done. Players like Adam Jones and Kenny Britt do twice the damage. I expect to get tons of crap for actually defending Goodell to an extent but it's just some food for thought. If Matt Stafford takes a hit do you blame him the tackle or the defensive end ? Place the blame were it belongs. Goodell is one man trying to do a job most people would never take. Players are men 21 or older Goodell shouldn't have to suspened the star QB for the Steelers for sexual assault accusations cause it never should have happened.

The Prof

educating us! Who wudda thunk it?!?! lol

I have no problem with the way he is running the game. He has been put in terrible positions over and over. By the owners, players and sometimes even the staff of teams. He will not be remembered for the fines, or the suspensions. He will be remembered for this 10 year labor agreement and how it affects the league long run. If the money is there for both sides and the league grows, he will be remembered fondly.

I like Wins, Cheese and I also Like Cookies. If you don't. Wow. :P

He should also be remembered

For helping bring player personal conduct under control in the league. The stricter NFL personal policy has led to far less rampant criminality, and I for one think it’s a good thing.

For instance, in the OP there are nine names. In the months before Goodell became commissioner, nine players from the Bengals alone were arrested. Vick’s dogfighting ring? Started in 2001, on Tag’s watch. The Minnesota Viking “sex” parties? On Tag’s watch. Ray Lewis’ conviction for obstruction? You better believe Goodell would have docked him game checks for it.

Goodell has made great strides toward making players more accountable, even when the law fails to do so. (Stallworth, Roethlisberger, et al.) He gets a lot of flack, but the game is better now — at least as far as integrity is concerned. There’s no way to prevent people from participating in heinous acts, but you should damn do something about it.

I think sometimes players get a little too much leeway

When it comes to illegal activities I think they should be treated as any normal person would.

Talib...

Need not play this year, period.

My guess is Britt gets a 4 game suspension.

Prior’s 5 game suspension was a gift from the NFL…. they didn’t even have to let him in.

Much like the Williams wall

I am willing to bet that they don’t get around to doing anything about Talib until after game 1. Meaning, after when it would matter to us.

Big Baby could be added to the long list of NFL sociopaths.

Goodell has actually done a decent [sic] job of enforcing the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The league is going about the implementation of HGH testing in a wise fashion.

I think that the Williams suspension will be reduced after the Starcaps suit. A measure of compassion for players who were duped seems in order.

well said ...

Aside from the lockout where both the top men for both sides were heavily in the media and spotlight and both seemed like neither were actually doing their job nor caring about the fans which brought about a lot of the backlash through out that whole process, I would say most agree w/ your sentiment concerning off the field issues. The biggest backlash for Goodell comes from his on the field penalties and fines.

See players and fans alike want the game to be played how its suppose to and as safe as it can be w/ in the parameters of good ol fashion American Football. I respect what he’s trying to do for the business as a whole but most also agree the league is getting to soft. I want these guys to be able to take care of their kids and still walk when they are done playing but thats their choice on when to step away before risking those types of long term effects. QUE SUH/ HARRISON (PIT) REFERENCE types of fines that fans and players alike are giving the most backlash for. There’s fines and heavy ones that he is throwing out there that are just not fair and its recognized. Hence the whole Dictator, judge jury and executioner thought process.

No one would want his job?

I know he took a “pay cut” during the lock out, but I think I could handle some flak from fans/players for the fat stacks of cash he has delivered to his house every payday. I am willing to bet that 99.9% of the guys on this board would jump at the chance to take his job/salary (CLF is a fluffer at an all-girl porn company, so I think Godell would switch with him)

Absolutely right!

These players are supposed to be grown men (adults) and he should not have to babysit any of them. Also, it is a priveledge for these players to be doing something they love (playing a game) for a living and getting paid the amount of money they get. They are very blessed to have the ability to play at the highest level of the game and they don’t appreciate it til they lose it. As for those that think that is a reason to ask for the moon in pay, it’s just plain wrong. They should have a college education to fall back on, period! If anyone of us on these boards pulled the crap these guys do off the field, we’d be fired. As for the fines handed down from Goodell for on the field actions, it’s just part of the game and it’s ever changing rules, that we deal with in our everyday jobs. Maybe not the fines that we receive, but fines well within their pocket book. Although, I do not agree to the fine to Suh, not for the amount of money cause he can afford it, but for the point of he is being recognized as a dirty player and will be on the refs radar every week for his play.

Finally a voice of reason on the NFL Commish...

I agree completely. I want to see stricter policies on thuggish behavior. There is no excuse for not acting like a civilized member of society just because you are famous. I wish he was commish of other industries as well, like Hollywood.

Also agree with the suspension for Pryor. Though I don’t think the NFL should be doing the NCAA’s dirty work, if they are unable to clean up their own mess, there is no reason that the NFL should be some sort of safehaven/escape route from punishment for those that knowingly violate the NCAA.

I've never had an issue with the Hitler of the NFL

In terms of his conduct policies, other than the NFL should have waited until the end of the year before instituting the violent hits legislature. Where I have issues with Badell is when he wont give up control of being Judge/Jury/ And executioner. He should be the guy who drops the hammer when it comes to giving fines, but in no way should he be the man that runs the appeals, I have been very vocal about that with my “love” for Badell, I still think the appeals should be headed up by people from the NFLPA, again it does not have to be 1 man it could be a group of 3 or 5 so that it’s an objective group.

How many lumps you want Doc?
