I see Felton as a hybrid back, but a hybrid of a different type than many. He seems to me to be a good half-back first, and a so-so blocking back second.
This gives me cause to think we need to keep him and Heller for this reason. What I don't see is moving Heller to the FB spot as a solution. Heller simply isn't quick enough to effectively pick up the blitz, nor fast enough to lead block for speed backs like we have.
What I do see is potential for a very good short yardage tandom. Felton following Heller up the middle is a ton a muscle to deal with, and both are solid recievers for various play-action/pass plays. In addition, thats a lot of extra protection coming out of the backfield allowing our other TEs to leak out somewhere. I'm thinking max protect with 1 or maybe 2 receivers out as this type of situation.
I also don't see the Lions running any lead back formations very often anyways, I see almost exclusively single back type sets with TEs lining up in the backfield as needed.
In addition, I would also love to see this extra roster spot open up for someone like Silva, or, cough, this is hard to say, DWheels, but I think Felton is the only power back we have, and he is a pretty good one at that.
What do you guys think?
>p.s. The fact that we are discussing the last 3 spots on our roster freaking rocks, I see no more of the response of "Oh, I'm sorry" to stating that I am a Lions fan.
