There has been some talk about how it will cost the Lions a ton to keep Calvin Johnson when his contract is up. The truth is, no he wont. Calvin is already going to hit the salary cap for over $10 million this season and $15.6 million next season. I expect the Lions to rework Calvin's contract before next season to extend him and lower that cap hit. I expect they will take part of his 2012 salary and include it into a signing bonus along with some extra cash so that the Lions can spread the cap hit over the life of the contract.
Currently the cap number for Matthew Stafford is about $12.5 million and Ndamukong Suh is about $11 million. Frankly, I do not expect CJ to be any more expensive than Stafford and Suh. So all we really need to resign CJ to a long term contract is about $2 million more per season than what we are paying now. That is probably much less thatn most of you were thinking he would cost to keep.
