The moves the Detroit Lions made earlier today to release Jack Williams and Korey Bosworth suddenly make a lot of sense. According to Tom Kowalski, the Lions followed up the earlier moves by claiming wide receiver Nate Hughes and offensive guard Greg Niland off waivers.
Hughes previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the league as an undrafted free agent and appeared in eight games in 2009. He caught five passes for 70 yards and one touchdown. Last year he was waived/injured during training camp and was placed on injured reserve. The Jaguars released him a couple days ago, and he is now headed to Detroit.
Niland is an undrafted free agent out of UMass that originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals. He was let go at some point and is now headed to Detroit as well.
Since the Lions decided to claim Niland, who is an offensive guard, I'm guessing this means Isaac Sowells, who worked out with them today, won't be signed. That's just a guess, though.
