Detroit Lions Claim Nate Hughes, Greg Niland Off Waivers
The moves the Detroit Lions made earlier today to release Jack Williams and Korey Bosworth suddenly make a lot of sense. According to Tom Kowalski, the Lions followed up the earlier moves by claiming wide receiver Nate Hughes and offensive guard Greg Niland off waivers.
Hughes previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the league as an undrafted free agent and appeared in eight games in 2009. He caught five passes for 70 yards and one touchdown. Last year he was waived/injured during training camp and was placed on injured reserve. The Jaguars released him a couple days ago, and he is now headed to Detroit.
Niland is an undrafted free agent out of UMass that originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals. He was let go at some point and is now headed to Detroit as well.
Since the Lions decided to claim Niland, who is an offensive guard, I'm guessing this means Isaac Sowells, who worked out with them today, won't be signed. That's just a guess, though.

Zack says thank you
Now in true Zack style he has posted a video. Using his faith and attitude very heavily. BUT the start of the video he does thank Detroit and talks about how he connected with the city so well. Looks happy excited and knows what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Nice to see him being so positive I can’t say I would have the same attitude.

His positive attitude
was part of the reason we all pulled for him. Unfortunately, the way he played didn’t jive with his body.
I wish the guy all the best
but I just cant watch anymore video’s where he goes on crazy god rants.

We'll see. I heard Schwartz talking about him maybe on Monday.
Something about the tone in his voice struck me as odd. He wasn’t gushing over him or giving him a verbal pat on the back.
Then you have Hillard who played decent last season, a lot of players working at multiple positions, a lot of bodies in camp, over the salary cap, and it got me wondering.

Hmm, in addition to what you said
they dont seem to be overly loyal to guys they didnt pick. At the same time they have to get the unit reps as a unit and swapping people out no matter how attractive on the front side is often counter productive in the long ruin. Its interesting, I certainly see the reasoning behind why you think the cross hairs might be on Gos.

Niland
Good to see that someone from UMass is actually on a team… I am familiar with him from being at all of the UMass home games, but unfortunately I have a very hard time grading o-lineman. I will say though that UMass plays a pro-style offense and it doesn’t seem like Havens (our QB) was on his ass too much. As both a Lions fan and a UMass fan, I hope Niland has success in Detroit.
Another WR? How about Demario Ballard?

I have been reluctant to think this would be a good move other than on Madden. Money notwithstanding……we need to seriously look at it. Our Oline is beat up and old. Hope at least one young guy comes through. Wish we had one more pick in this last draft for a mid round olineman.
Malek
Gaither is a raider
also has had back problems and questionable work ethic at times. I expect most next year you will see Fox take over for Backus whos contract will be up and isn’t getting any younger. We will probably draft one or two as well. We do need lineman there is no question. As far as a LT in the first round though I think we already have that guy.

so don’t use that as an excuse. Backus is a FA next year with a giant cap number and Backus is 33 years old. Best tackle in the NFC north isn’t saying much. Clifton is the only competition. Not hating just stating facts I’d rather have the long term answer in place if he WINS the job.

I can't help it Ryan
Until we have the next Porchette on our roster, i just wont be happy. Avril is good on the pass rush but not so good against runs straight at him.
How many lumps you want Doc?
he's not just GOOD at the pass rush..
in his first three years, he has had more sacks than Michael Strahan had in his first four…if that means anything to you about how good he is haha
I've never said he wasn't good at Pass rushing
I just think when teams run at him he gets pushed around a little too easy. But the more I think about it, if he would have ever had a good OLB playing behind him maybe his job is to eat up the blockers and allow the LB to clean up the play, too bad Peterson couldn’t do that! And with SUH playing next to him maybe we will see a whole different Avril this season.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Ryan
Being good at pass rushing does not excuse a player from the other responsibilities of his position and run stopping is one of those responsibilities.
He is looking more and more like a situational pass rusher who should be removed on running down.
