Clinton Portis?
As well as the lions have played this preseason there has been one glaring weakness; the running game. I think a guy like Clinton Portis is perfect to sign from the "rent-a-back store". He brings a veteran presence, he can run between the tackles, he compliments Jahvid Best, and he will come cheap. What do you guys think? Oh and leave other possible backs the lions could sign (maybe Lawrence Maroney) in the comments section with explanations.

I really thought of clinton portis
When we picked up bell and harrison. I liked clinton portis and do agree~
I think he'd bring a light-heartedness to the team that wouldn't come off as lazy or misbehavin'
ya know? his post-game press conferences are some of the best of NFL history. Its awesome.

Are we talking about the same Portis who could not run for Washington last year?
there is a reason Shany traded him from Denver once upon a lifetime ago, and there is a reason he could not run for Shany last year as well. I am saying he has to many miles on those legs, let’s stay with what we already have. Maroney is a better candidate than Clinton ( I tripped on nothing) Portis.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Seems to be alot of people who come in and out in that guys program…I think its more shanny than the players.Discounting fat albert Fuck that dude!
shanahan as always maxed his RBs...the fact that a starter could go down and there would be little drop off in production is a testament to his system
at least in Denver anyway…but when Denver RBs went anywhere else, their production always seemed to drop way off.
In any event, I’ve always liked Portis but he had major groin problems last season that kept him out (I should know…I made the mistake of drafting him last year). Either way, I’d rather see us take a flier on an undrafted load of a free agent than go with Portis.

scheme fit AND personnel fit
His days in Denver was only possible b/c they had the same O-line for many years. Not to mention that those guys were REALLY good. The scheme was simplictic for a back (1 cut and go north-south). Washington does not have that kind of line now, therfore they dont have the regular 1200+ yd rusher every year.
agreed. you shortened up my commentary with the "scheme fit"
Really I was trying to get to the one cut/north-south scheme that Shanahan employed but the O-Line is a great point as well.

First player I thought we were gonna get after Mikel went down

How much left in the tank for Portis?
He’s at that majic brick wall most NFL RB’s hit after 30 yrs old. Also Remember his antics in Washington? He had like a hint of the Dennis Rodman act going on. I suppose if he comes in and runs like his hair is on fire like he can he’d most def be an asset. Question is… Is he gonna bring that here or just the Rodman act? A guy I think the Lions should snap up immediately if the rumors of cutting him are true is Ryan Grant from GB.
Im still thinking the Lions missed the bus on Blount
yea he had a fire under him but the leaders would have put that fire out quick. Im sure Schwartz had a talk w/ Fisher first after the whole situation w/ the fight in Tennessee and was turned off by it but when an undrafted FA runs for 1000 yds w/ a 5 ypr avg id say he was a sleeper pick.
That would of given us possible Draft spot and not had to go back for Leshoure or even if so could you imagine. Best Leshoure Blount …. as the 1-2-3 backs … I wasnt high on him but I think he proved last year he can play in the NFL.

I read somewhere that he may be on the trade block. I would love to see us get him and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind playing with Calvin again like back at GT.
If he is released
Grab that guy.
I can’t believe they would let both him and Marion Barber go. They always go with a 2 back 3/4 rotation (one back gets 75% of the carries and the other gets 25%)
How sweet would that be
if he got released I guarantee Calvin will be doing some recruiting. Him and Best would make a great tandem with Mo Mo for some insurance if needed

hells yes
I would have rather we gotten McClain but that bus has left… for this season anyway.
Does Portis have anything left in the tank? It’s tough to say but I’d like to think so. He did indeed show up a bit out of shape for tryouts this year. Is his head on straight? I’d like to believe he’s had his wake up call now.
If he were to come here there’s one thing I know for sure, he’d be our best pass protection back, His acumen is right up there to make himself even if he isn’t carrying the rock. My suspicion is he could still carry too! If he’ll come play for a cheap incentive laden deal it’s not the end of the world if he only gives 1/2 season of kickass service before getting injured… if he does end up injured.

How about Maroney?
He’s a bit young….
Looking to restart his NFL career…
Can run between the tackles.
He's not a primary...
But I would have to think he’d be in better shape than portis.

I just don't trust him to stay healthy,
And he doesn’t seem like a 3rd down back type of guy to me. Like many others I would prefer Maroney, but I’m not all that high on him either. We will have to see if Mayhew can swing something with all the cuts coming up.
3rd down back?
We don’t need a 3rd down back, thats the point. We need a power back.
No way..
He isn’t even as good as momo

I swear this entire post along with all the corresponding reply posts has happened before. It is almost like he was on our radar last year, and the year before.
