Detroit Lions Sign Isaac Sowells, Announce Other Moves
Detroit Lions practice was delayed this afternoon as teams around the league waited for the official word on the ratification of the new CBA. According to multiple reports, it has in fact been ratified, meaning all players under contract will be able to practice.
Before word came down about the new CBA, the Lions announced four signings and four releases.
Unrestricted free agents Bobby Carpenter and Chris Houston are officially back under contract (Carpenter for one year and Houston for two), as is restricted free agent Cliff Avril. Offensive tackle Isaac Sowells, who worked out for the Lions yesterday, is also now on the team.
To clear room on the roster, the Lions released four players: WR Michael Moore, OG Pat Illig, CB Branden Bufford and CB Brandon Stephens. Moore joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent last year and spent the season on the practice squad. The other three players were signed as UDFAs this year.

On an unrelated (funny) note
With Nate Solder signing his deal today, Prince Amukamara is the only player from the 2011 draft who remains unsigned.
i worked out extra hard today so i wouldn't break my foot like other lazy PoS

Trust me, it takes about 1 week to figure it out. Then it gets fun cause if you go to Acme Packing Comp (GB’s SBNation site). . They like to use italics for sarcasm. Or was that God Bless You Boys. Oh yeah both sites do. Good group of guys over at the APC and I’ll even throw in the Daily Norseman (Vikings) but stay away from Windy City Gridiron. . .Those Bears fans are for the most part dinks. Is this your first season on the POD? If so then let me give you a little insight. Divisional game weeks around here are quite fun. It gets intense sometimes with the banter about who will win and ect. ect. ect. That’s about the only time trolling is allowed on the SBNation sites.

Im on the west coast so foreskin fans are few and far between but not a few of our eastern brothers here harbor an intense dislike for them and all things burgandy and gold. Completely Speculative
My gut is telling me that we may not see Jeff Backus make the 53 this year. Not that I think it has much to do with this move, but it would pretty much fix their current cap issues and because he is on the non football injury list they get out of his contract easily.
from what I have read, hears, seen (some clips of practice here and there), Jason Fox looks to me like he might be capable of starting this year. Have to keep my eye on him throughout the preseason games and in practice clips against 1st team defensive line (if any happen to pop up). If he performs well enough we may just see a changing of the guard at LT.
Might also see them approach Backus about redoing his contract as a backup / depth player. He would be one hell of a depth guy for a year or two because he can likely play any position on the line.
Like I said, just me musing, nothing but my gut telling me to keep my eye on this.

+1
and a bonus +1!
It’s an interesting thought and thinking outside of the box for sure. I just can’t see them doing that to Backus at this time. I also can’t see themselves leaving the line that vulnerable. For example I guess the D line totally blew up the O line (Fox and Hilliard as T) Then again I think they’ll blow up A LOT of O lines :)
I think they’ll have to work on restructuring some contracts to fit under cap. I’m not too worried about them waving the magic wand to make it happen. Also who gets cut tomorrow? FELTON!
Individuals should protect themselves. Governments can't protect individuals from themselves, it's just impossible, otherwise they become a tyranical state. -Ron Paul
Well part of why the D Line blew up the O line was because it was a running drill
When the defense knows what is coming before the play is called it makes it pretty hard for the offense to do anything. Schwartz commented on this in his post practice interview. Sometimes they intentionally set up the offense or defense to have a stacked deck, part of the evaluation process.

I really believe that fox is 100%
In these type of situations, the less you hear about O lineman the better and we have heard nothing about him. The kid is doing his job.
I have always been a Backus supporter. I am a firm believer that he is under rated and martyred by the fan base. The guy is a gamer, He is an iron man, He is consistent, He is not dominate but he is more than capable and in the right scheme he is well beyond capable.
Here is the one thing that stands out to me. He has seen more coaches in the NFL than most players will see in their entire lives all the way back to the pee wee league. You wanna know what always happens. He starts. He is the real deal.
If Fox ousts the old man, I am game. If he beats Backus for the starting role he has earned it from a grizzled competent veteran. That is saying something.

11-1
At best!
The kid has shown something. I have no doubt of his skill. The problem with that. We are talking about the blind side of a player that…. well….. we all know too damn well.
The NFL is built on men who are conservative, they rarely take any real chances and when they do, they lose their jobs. I am not convinced that JS runs in that mold (a convo for another day) but how easy would it be for any coach to sit a grizzled and at the very least competent vet?
Fox is going to have to have a brilliant camp and preseason to unseat the old man, IMHO. Or, the old man is going to have to recover extremely slowly from his present injury.

Hmm
what I know of Jason Fox consists of mostly what has been written by our brethren, and what I saw last preseason. The consensus seems to be Fox is really good. It may be, I didnt see it with my eyes last preseason, he looked like just another 7th round project. Coaches say he’s having a good camp. They would wouldnt they? With all the butchering Jeff is getting in the national press, they have to say something. You know my heart is with Jim but when it comes to anything to do with the team he is Snake Oil Schwartz. I think Jeffs second year with Bob Sims is going to be at least as good as they were down the stretch.

The first part of my post
was an extension of your last thought “I fully expect you to be ready to help Suh uncork a few QBs” (referring to Cutler.) I then checked the Bears depth chart out of curiosity to see if they brought in a better 2nd string qb yet, (obviously not.) I have a feeling their 2nd stringer, whoever it is, will see play time during the regular season.
Did you guys see the size of that chicken?
When referring to Cutler
I used the moniker “Gutless”. Of all the nfl qb’s, I dislike him the most by a lot.
