Detroit Lions Training Camp: Injuries Piling Up At Offensive Tackle
- The Detroit Lions continued training camp on Saturday morning with their eighth practice.
- The following players missed all of today's practice: RB Maurice Morris, WR Titus Young, LT Jeff Backus, RT Gosder Cherilus, DT Andre Fluellen, DT Nick Fairley, CB Alphonso Smith and S Louis Delmas.
- Jason Fox, who had been filling in at left tackle for the injured Backus, suffered an injury of his own this morning, leaving practice after going down in a drill. He was seen with a walking boot and crutches after practice, according to Dave Birkett. Chris McCosky reports that Fox has a mid-foot injury.
- With Backus, Cherilus and now Fox out with injuries, the Lions are down to Tony Ugoh, Corey Hilliard, Johnny Culbreath and Isaac Sowells, who just signed a couple days ago, at offensive tackle.
- Stephen Tulloch practiced at middle linebacker for the Lions for the first time since joining the team. DeAndre Levy was at ROLB and Justin Durant remained at LOLB.
- Cornerbacks Eric Wright and Maurice Leggett had to leave practice with dehydration issues.
- Titus Young, who has missed the last week of practice, expects to return next week.

never seen so many boots on one team.

In the words of Schwartz lingo
Phonz has a foot, Fairly has foot, and Fox has a foot,
That means the Lions have lost 1 yard wihout playing a game.
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

If we start out the season without Gosder, Fox, and Backus
I would NOT start Matthew Stafford in game 1. They would never do that but he better be doing a lot of 3-step drops or he will get destroyed. On the subject of dehydration, that is inexcusable. They teach you how to hydrate properly in high school. Players not taking care of their bodies and missing practice because of it shows lack of professionalism on their part. It’s their job to play, and if they aren’t treating their bodies in a manner to be able to practice, shame on them. Think about if they still had 2-a-days and more full padded practices.
+1
now with no two a days there really is no excuse for things like that. But you can never take that sort of thing too seriously either. A little off topic, but does anybody know what number Eric Wright is going to wear as a Lion

I feel good about Hilliard on the left side if it comes to that
I felt like Hilliard was one of our best OL men last year all things considered. He had some tough assignments and he did very well.
Right tackle isn’t quite as important because Stafford can at least see pressure from that side.

Kinda like zdeno chara drinking coke on the bench and being hospitalized for dehydration issue, no professional sports player should ever have dehydration issues like that its rediculous.
you guys realize...
that Wright was excused from practice recently for having the flu. I think that is a pretty good reason for getting dehydrated at practice. Now I don’t know what Leggett’s story is, but sometimes water just doesn’t do the trick.
I wonder if the training staff has ever heard
of the that drink that was developed by the University of Florida back in 1965. It is supposed to help with hydration.

Uh... Not exactly...
On really really hot days, water is better for hydration than Gatorade.
He who laughs last didn't get it.
wow
When my brother went to the hospital for dehydration, they gave him Gatorade while they were starting the I.V.

gatorade and water accomplish two different things.
gatorade has sodium in it, which when you sweat heavily, is essential to avoid cramps. It also has sugar in it for immediate energy for your body. The dye in gatorade also increases thirst.
By the time you’re fully dehydrated, you need all of those things just as much asy ou need straight water.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
So if I understand correctly
You are better off drinking Gatorade before you become dehydrated because when you become fully dehydrated you need both Gatorade and water. So the training staff should push Gatorade because it helps replenish the salts, the sugar will give them more energy and the dye will help them drink more?

He is saying you should drink both.
Water will keep you from becoming dehydrated but, the Gatorade is for immediate replenishment.

It’s really not the end of the world. Ever since the Korey Stringer tragedy, they don’t fuck around when it comes to that. The Lions aren’t gonna lose any games this season because Maurice Legget and Eric Wright got sick and missed a day of practice.
RIP Stringer
If it took your death to get it threw the leagues heads then at least your death wasn’t in vain. And 1 more tid-bit about Stringers tragedy. His wife was at the front of all the changes that have come down all the way to the pee-wee leagues about keeping players refreshed with fluids. Sports Illustrated did a article about a year ago.

That's very cool
I actually didn’t realize his wife was so involved, but considering how senseless his death was, it’s good that they started to take it seriously.

Fox is a hit, but is replacing all of these long time players really that bad?
Replace em in a group, suffer for a while, but come out of it with unit cohesion after a rough game or two. Quite possibly we may be pleasantly surprised by inserting hungry players and seeing what a group of player trying to prove themselves can do.
.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?
I say
Backus has a year left and can be a decent guard for a few years, sims is solid at LG, replace Raioloa immediately…i wish we woulda got Kreutz, peterman is OK if injury free, and RT is up in the air. Fox could take over…dont know how strong he is bc RT is usually a road grater
No way Kreutz is better then Raiola
there’s a reason the Bears let Kreutz walk after making six Pro Bowls and being a team captain and their team’s best OL for a decade, and that’s ‘cause he’s really not that good anymore.
Motown
I know we all have a great dislike for Bears around here, but come on man. Dom can barely hold Olens’ Jock. 6 time PB players against 0 time PB. . .It’s a open and shut case. It wasn’t Kruetz that was letting Cutler get crushed last year it was that make shift line around him.
How many lumps you want Doc?
agreed
if matthew goes down again, our ownership will have to realistically think about drafting a qb. i will be saying prayers before every single game this year that he stays healthy! if we lost him, i see us losing calvin in free agency too because he doesnt want to wait around for a rookie qb to progress again.
I'm apprehensive also, but eventually changes will be made...
if their job wasn’t to protect our most valuable commodity.
.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?
he was an up and coming LT but had back surgery..
that is always risky. if he is cheap we can bring him in but it seems like our injuries to the linemen are 2-3 weeks ones which will bring them back. we;d sign him only if he was going to start though i think.
Gaither
I’m not sure, but I think he failed his physical for the Raiders. So if we got him then It might just be another Tackle to add to the injury list with his back problems. If he can check out healthy then I am all for signing him. He could take over at LT and we could move Backus to RG

Are the Leos always riddled with injuries maybe we need new staff in that area this is crazy… smh I was rooting for fox too
I think you need to replace Leos...
with any NFL team. Most teams deal with injuries, you just better hope you have a good enough team/depth to still win games. We haven’t had the luxury to win games with injuries, but I am hopeful that we are to that point now.
on the bright side
if this what our d-line is doing to our own guys while holding back a little at the same time, imagine what they’re going to do to other qb’s when they take the leashes off, and let them go full speed.
I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.
okay soo...
Who is the asshole who keeps injuring all of the linemen’s feet? ha

Ah but I was so much older then and younger than right now
I watched Fox leave the field under his own power. I was afraid it was a knee but he was walking fine.
Wright was REALLY sick, and Leggett got real woozy, real quick.

You 2 need to get past any differences you may have. To be honest, I never knew there was an "issue". I would have guessed Sean would welcome your opinions and analysis like any other member on this site.
I will just ask you some questions on a few specific players, if that’s OK with you.
So why not just change the story around and post it here?
So it’s not identical.

Thanks, D! You guys know where to find my schtik. just a click away.
I have to use some good judgement here. I don’t want to be banned for stepping on sensitive toes.
LeShoure is the real deal. In space, he's murder.
He’s getting 2nd team snaps but I think we will see alot of him and Best together.
Thanx for reminding me! I want to watch his blocking and blitz pickups.
I kept telling everyone before the draft he was the real deal,
but no one was listening because everyone wanted the "Bama boy"
The trap that people fall into is thinking of LeShoure as a tackle to tackle runner.
He’s not. He hits the corner with speed and power. Pity the safety in the box.
bingo
I’m tired of hearing (non PoD) mention of him as the bruising back we need up the middle.

what dont they get!!!! our o line has always been a problem in the D.
our QBS go down… our backs dont have holes…
That's a valid point, D. However. . . . .
. . . . Some backs make an O-line look better than it really is. LeShoure proved to be that kind of back at Illinois behind one of the worst O-lines in the BCS.
Fun fact: Only 2 BCS backs amassed more yards than LeShoure last season. Neither was named Ingram. One was a QB from Michigan.
You were not the only 1 on Leshoure's band wagon.
I said then and still say now he was the best back coming out this year. He had all the intangibles at illinois, blocking=check;good speed and power=check; ability to pick up blockers=check; best hands out of the backfield=check. N.O. screwed up taking Ingram over Leshoure.
How many lumps you want Doc?
I don't think there was a more happy person as a Lions fan
Than i was on draft day when we moved up to grab Leshoure. I was in front of the computer doing my happy dance when they said we drafted him.

Hey Mikey, I've been hearing some really good things about Spievey..
How has he looked to you? A big jump forward from last year?
LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! GO STEFAN LOGAN!
Spievey has made a quantum improvement over his rookie season.
He, Aaron Brown, and Eric Berry are coleaders for most improved player, IMO. Matt Clapp fits this group well also.
Back to Spievey. He’s always had athleticism, and a willingness to stick his nose into tackling. This year, he’s bigger and stronger. The thing that really sticks out is his instincts. Great jumps on routes and good angles are proof that Spievey has spent a ton of film room time. It’s paid off too.
Technique wise, there’s still alot of CB in him. Low, quick backpeddle, quick transition into run support (quickest among the safeties), but still has stiff hips (lol) when breaking down in coverage. Those hips give Spievey some balance issues. Instead of throwing an elbow straight back vertically, he swings his elbows horizontally to compensate. This creates a gap with receivers that could turn into a step of seperation.
You guys are gonna like Spievey.
I liked the pick of Spievey when we made it...
good to hear he’s making the transition. Sounds like a safeties are going to be pretty good, Delmas, Spievey, and the vet Coleman should give us a pretty solid Safety group.
LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! GO STEFAN LOGAN!
Unfortunately,
Coleman looks like only the 4th best safety on the roster. Randy Phillips might beat him out. Another safety in Coleman’s rear view (and closing fast) is UDFA Ricardo Silva (Hampton). Silva is 6’ 3" and 225 lbs. He’s having a GREAT camp, and could even make a nice SAM LB.
Brown you say!!??!?
Wow! That’s the first I recall hearing much about Brown this year. Any further details?
That’s interesting to hear you also say Phillips may have overtaken Coleman!! I like it :) I’ve heard you talk up Silva a bit. That’s interesting when you put it that he might end up pushing Coleman! What you’re saying is at the very least we should expect him to be on PS.
Here’s one from left field, has Wendling gotten any face time at S? I know he’s solid on ST, I’m curious if they’re giving much effort to work on his S ability.

I don't like our corners leaving practice...
Whether its for dehydration or not, I’m worried about the cornerbacks. There’s not really too much depth there any way.
I disagree
We may not have a "Big name star" but we have a few good capable players.
Starting Nickle package:
Houston, Wright, Phonz
Backups:
Vasher, Berry, Leggett
by Millen_Free on Aug 6, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I hope not...
Berry might be doing good and all, but as of last year, Smith was really the only bright spot at corner. 5 interceptions in 10 starts…at least he caused turnovers to make up for his poor coverage and tackling ability unlike Houston who just made one in 15 games. I think if Berry beats out anyone it should be Houston. He has one interception and 56 tackles…The best corners don’t have that many tackles because their receivers never get the ball…and if they do have that many tackles, they make up for it in picks…which Houston did not do…ever
Berry plays a style that is similar to Chris Houston.
Playing LCB, these guys have strong side responsibilities. They have to go tight man coverage on WRs.
The RCBs can play “off” coverage on the weak side and work with the FS on slot coverage or zone. Berry will play behind Houston at LCB.
Vasher has experience at LCB but is better suited to play zone, like Smith.
For the CBs, roles are strictly defined in most defenses.
hey how is Toone doing in camp?
Im really hopin he makes the active roster this season, i feel like hes a guy that might play better on sunday than he shows in practice, simply because hes not the fastest or the biggest receiver on the roster, but hes pretty dynamic, i mean the guy was a stud return man in college
Toone looks like Toone 2010.
With the stiffest competition in many years at WR, Toone doesn’t stand a chance. Mike Moore is already a goner. Toone could be the next vet out the door.
interesting
What I’m hearing then is Wright may be called on to do more zone work here on RCB. Isn’t he much better at m2m?
Individuals should protect themselves. Governments can't protect individuals from themselves, it's just impossible, otherwise they become a tyranical state. -Ron Paul
Remember Ryan
Berry was the guy who replaced Wade last year as the first alternate, not Phonz. And without looking it up here, didn’t Berry have 1 in in the half of football when he was in there? Before the got hurt that is. Regardless of who the 3rd is (I’m betting on Berry and Leggett) we will have an improved group at the CB position.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Phonz had only been on the team for like 5 days
he didn’t know the defense. I wouldn’t read too much into Berry being ahead of him on the depth chart 5 days into Phonz’s tenure as a Lion.
Very true Trysdor.
But Berry went in the game as our #3 last year regardless of who was behind him. And with the extra height he has on Phonz and his speed he is going to make it hard for Gunny to keep him off the field. That is assuming he continues to keep looking good during camp and pre-season.

you're calling for them to pick someone who is injury free
as if that is a predictor they’ll remain injury free. Sure we don’t want people who have had repetitive injuries of the same type or certain types of injuries. Still tho you can’t predict someone will tweak a foot like we saw today.
The point is you can’t always predict this stuff. Do we need to draft a LT as #1 concern that is good and is injury free? Beats me…

Thanx, Ee. I wish I had access to the practice film packages.
My impressions and opinions would be much better informed.
I’m at the point in my camp observations where I can move on from schemes and depth, to focusing on a given player for some nuance.
I want to focus on the players on the O-line, LeShoure’s blocking and blitz pickups, Blitz packages, etc.
The nuts and bolts stuff that is analytically tough but most rewarding when I see something that makes me go “WOW!”
ohhhh!
You just touched on one, of many lol, questions I’ve had! I too have been curious how LeShoure has looked in protection, or if he’s even getting used much as such. I’ve also wondered if they’ve used him lead blocking much for Best and how he’s done at that. I’m delighted to hear Clapp has been doing a great job too btw!
