Leshoure TORE his achilles

Via 97.1 The Ticket. No link, but just heard it on the radio. This is devastating for a rookie. Not to overreact, but a lot of people don't come back from injuries like this, let alone players.

i torn mine 8 years ago and i could not run for 2 years:(

I still limp from it…safe to say he is lost for the season and will not be the same next season… if ever (as a runner)

by Shankdiddy on Aug 8, 2011 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

I know people who tore theirs too

They still limp from it as well. Athletes have access to better rehab resources, but most people never fully recover. Which means as a runner, his career could be over.

Our choice without a trade are limited

We can resign K-Smoove, go after Rickey Williams or Clinton Portis, or my personal favorite, sign Mike Hart.

This kid was more than just a running threat for this team

He was going to be the buffer between the D and Stafford. A three yard and a cloud of dust kind of runner. Keeping the D just a little bit more honest. That little bit, in the NFL, is the difference between a hurry and a hit, it is the difference between a hit and a sack.

Someone wake me up, this nightmare is cruel and unusual. The constitution prohibits it!

not a expert on the time line but recovery to even rehab could be up to 6 to 8 months

then once you recover you have to take it easy to avoid micro tears. That is the part that causes it to tear on every single time you take a step and can prolong recover for years… he will get this regardless. I am NOT a expert but even best case senerio he comes back next year he won’t be able to practice and he will be in constant pain and dealing with micro tears… i am dealing with it from 8 years ago i have to stretch really good everyday just so i can go up and down steps :(…

Just to inject a little glass-is-half-full

Even without LeShoure, we are still better at running back than we were last year.

Best is no longer a rookie and doesn’t have dual turf toe. Morris is still the capable vet backup, and Brown is also hopefully better going into his third year.

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

at any position, can look good in camp. They don’t have opposing D trying to take their heads off. As it’s already been stated, another finesse back. We needed power, that’s why we drafted Mikel.

Be Honest

Its the running back position. If it were to happen to any position you would want it to be this one. Many candidates to replace him. Were we pinning our playoff hopes on a rookie 2nd round RB? It doesn’t help but the sky is not falling.

by 2manyears on Aug 8, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Running backs cant create holes in an offensive line that doesnt create holes, so i wouldnt say that the running back problem was completely solved to begin with. Yes leshoure was a good start to the fix but without holes to get through who’s to say how much he was going to improve our running game.

by Michael21 on Aug 8, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

True but...

A good power back can sometimes take advantage of lesser holes, and keep the run defense honest. A compliment to Best’s speed was needed badly.

Expectations don't produce!

by 2manyears on Aug 8, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

This is the reason why the Titans don’t want to pay Chris Johnson and why running backs are a dime a dozen. Arien Foster led the league in rushing last year and he wasn’t drafted. Priest Holmes was a monster for Kansas City because of their line. Look at Clinton Portis. Monster for Denver, gets traded to a worse line and drops way off.

The Pistons’ Jonas Jerebko tore his achilles last year and was out for the season but he is supposed to be completely healthy for this upcoming year.

Of course the NBA will miss its whole season with the lockout but…

by mochaj on Aug 8, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be wary of him though

not a ton of milage for an older back…but he was pretty terrible. Ya our O-Line was garbage but Forte’s average increased…but at the very least he’d be a solid 3rd down back since he can catch out of the backfield or block reasonably well for a RB

depending on how he plays in the preseason

usually we carry 4 RB’s on our roster…but we’re kind deep at WR and DL this season so RB might end up being only 3 spots. Unga missed most of camp so far due to his wife having a baby, so he’s behind. If he’d had all camp, I’d say a 80 percent chance that Taylor gets cut, but since its a shortened offseason and he knows the offense who knows. I’d say probably around 55% chance he’s gone

“I don’t know if you heard, but you’re gonna be pissed”

I didn’t realize HOW pissed I’d be. I was most excited for LeShoure’s career here out of all our draftees, and as others said, I doubt he comes back and makes any noise.

That said, I don’t think the season is over or anything by any means… Yes, its disgusting to think about, and it rings of ‘same ol’ Lions’ and all that, but RB is the most replaceable position on the team.

You gotta look past what we gave up for him and everything, and just move forward. It happened, it happens, and we’re not the only team that has ever seen it go down.

By the way, the answer to your question about an RB that has come back from a torn achilles tendon....

Curtis Martin. In fact, Martin recovered from a torn achilles twice. Once in his sophomore year at the University of Pittsburgh and then again in 1998 with the Jets.

I usually am not an optimist but.....

I think (or hope) Mikel will come back fine. I know some of you have said that you had torn your achilles before and that you still limp from it. I also am guessing you are not a professional football player. These guys are built like machines. They recover twice as fast from injury due to the way their bodies have been built up, their crazy genetics, and the training staffs they have access to. When saying most guys that have had a torn achilles have not been able to come back, that is true, however, those guys usually already have a few seasons under their belt, and have the wear and tear of those seasons as well. Leshoure has just played what, 2 or 3 years in college and hasn’t even stepped foot on an NFL field? I think he will be fine. Think of Rashard Mendenhall. His rookie year he had a bad knee injury, and now he is one of the best players at his position. I’m not going to be too worried about Leshoure’s future until he/Lions staff, gives me a reason to be. Let’s just hope for a speedy recovery.
