WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAAAAAT???
You heard me!
Today will go down as a harsh day for Lions fans with the loss of LeShoure for the season. It just might also go down as a good day! Today we were awarded Cody "square peg" Brown off waivers. BFD, right? NO! This kid could play in college and had a bright future. That is until he was drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round 2009 and they went about trying to convert him from 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OLB. He ended up mashing up his wrist pretty bad in the pre season and went to the IR. The Cards cut ties with him and the Jets decided to try their hand at converting him to the OLB last year on their practice squad. While the details are limited, it didn't work out. They dropped him a few days ago and their loss might be our gain... unless your name is Willie Young.
Now I'm not expecting miracles here but I firmly believe Brown is the type of project they wanted in Young. The difference is he's stronger, faster, more athletic, and experienced on both sides. He's kind of a bowling ball type build of Tulloch @ 6'2" 255, and also a good thumper. In college he drew praises for his ability to deal with linemen using his bull rush, but also was adept in a variety of ways at getting after the QB. He may be small but he had no trouble dealing with much larger blockers. He's got a good motor and if he gets to spend some time learning from KVB he might, just might, be the guy to help step in on the RDE at some time.
We were just having the discussion around here about the types of DE we have. We have Avril and LoJack working best off the left. That also is the side best suited for Young's style. That leaves a question about who we have that is best suited to step in for KVB should the situation arise. I maintain LoJack is good there despite his struggles there in Seattle. Still, is Flu the depth for the right? Ok, but nah. I would expect them to give Brown a good hard look on the right with an eye to his potential to be depth behind KVB. He can play in that mode, allbeit not at that level (yet?) but maybe, just maybe he's got a shot at being the bright spot in this otherwise goddamn awful day for us fans.
prediction? I'm not going to say that he's going to knock Young off the squad this season, or at all. Then again I'm not going to be surprised one bit if he does!! Brown still has PS eligibility so it's possible he could end up there too. All in all tho, I think this kid has a good chance of doing something and adding to the Square Peg Brigade ( ©mickeyclaw) mystique of MaySchwartz. Could it be possible in a couple years our 2 starter DE are both SquarePeg guys in LoJack and Cody Brown?? yes it sure is!
