Detroit Lions Training Camp: Notes From Tuesday's Practice

  • This morning's practice had to be moved inside because of inclement weather. It was closed to the public as a result.
  • Reminder: Wednesday's practice will start at 3:15 p.m. and Thursday's session will begin at 9:15 a.m. Both practices are open to the public.
  • Wide receiver Titus Young practiced, but he was limited, only participating in the individual drills, according to Chris McCosky.
  • Offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus is doing "more work in practice each day," according to Tom Kowalski.
  • Paula Pasche reports that offensive guard Jeff Maddux had to be carted off the field after suffering an injury. It may just be a rolled ankle, though.
  • Pasche also reports that linebacker Bobby Carpenter was back at practice after missing Monday's session because he was sick.
  • Cornerback Alphonso Smith was doing some running, indicating his return from a broken foot is nearing.
  • Former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who is the father of Lions defensive assistant Brandon Fisher, attended today's practice.

Fisher

can’t hurt to have him at practice to put his input in

by hate2lovelions on Aug 9, 2011 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

I believe he was a defensive assistant to Buddy Ryan. And a defensive coordinator for Buddy Ryan at age 30 for the Eagles. I wouldn’t mind him taking over for Gunther if Gunther decides to retire someday. Fisher might want to join Schwartz here in Detroit and I don’t know about anyone else but I wouldn’t mind having him do something for us

even how he was for the Saints. All he needs to do is get the short yardage and give Best a breather. I feel like Best can be better than Chris Johnson next year because he is more humble and cares a lot more about his team. When the lions boost that O-Line a little bit in the middle Best will break out. Chris Johnson runs behind the best O-Line in the NFL must be nice

Exactly

He is only gonna get better. Picture Chris Johnson going to the lions with the 17th overall pick in the 2008 draft. HMM if this were to happen do you really think he would be the player he is today I don’t think so. If Best was behind the the titans line he would have broken 1,000 yards as a rookie. This sounds just like the Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith days when people would say that Barry would have done twice as good behind the Cowboys O-Line. Except modern day lions have Mayhew who will get a good run blocking O-line soon

by hate2lovelions on Aug 9, 2011 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

we will see about that O line improvement. This is one area I think Mayhew is lacking.

He has had 3 years now and has not made a single significant draft choice to the O line and only one trade. I know they think the O line is capable but I am not buying it. They do not pass the eye test watching running back blaze into the back end of our line over and over.

Dom is the obvious one that people universally agree with

He’s absolutely terrible in the run game. The problem in just getting rid of him is that he is a valuable team leader and veteran presence.

Peterman could improve a lot just by being healthy this year. Sims is solid, Gosder has shown flashes but again it’s a health issue with him, and Backus is playing pretty much as well as he ever has in his career.

In my opinion, if we got rid of any of those guys beyond Dom this year, it would be a year too soon. And who will replace Dom at this point and run the OL this far into camp?

by WestsideLionsFan on Aug 9, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

in the future

I say we get a young center to learn behind Dom for a year and then play. This team has gotten to the point where we can groom young players like Jason Fox, and Aaron Berry.

by hate2lovelions on Aug 9, 2011 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Secondary players are not in the same line of thinking in this senario as O line players

O line is not a plug and play position. You need cohesiveness with the guy 12 inches to your left and right. Developing players is fine. Putting genuine resources to the single most important position between your QB and the D is something I would never sacrifice.

by the way, I think he could be fine if he can stay healthy this year.

by hate2lovelions on Aug 9, 2011 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I've defended Pete here in the past

and hope I don’t have to this year because if I do feel like I have to I won’t. Staying healthy has been a problem for him the last couple years and his foot injury last year likely was the cause of all the false starts, That had never been a problem with him before. I hope one of the UDFA’s or unheralded FA’s currently on the roster steps up to challenge for his position, Obviously the Lions have little faith in Gandy or he’d have been playing instead of Pete last year. At 29 he is not likely to improve enough to gain that faith,

Ah but I was so much older then and younger than right now

by Justan Oldfart on Aug 9, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not against Peterman

I mean he was our best lineman 2 years ago, but I just don’t see how a foot or leg injury can make a guy move early. If anything it should have made him slower at the snap of the ball not quicker. A false start is a mental issue period, and he failed too many times last year. I do hope we see the Peterman from 2 years ago. Add him to Simm’s and we have legit Guards. If Backus and Gos can get back to 100% we have legit Tackles. All we are missing is that guy in the middle who can actually move bodies to the left or right.

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Aug 10, 2011 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The term is a bit of a misnomer

All it takes is a flinch,, it’s not like he was beginning the block process. There’s a lot of pressure placed on the foot in the oline stance and I can see how a slight movement or flinch could occur as a result of a painful foot. As I said false start penalties were not a problem with him in tha past so i expect the injury was at the root of those problems, It’s a damn shame we had noone to replace him.

Ah but I was so much older then and younger than right now

The game has evolved past dom's skill set

Simple as that. The other players keep getting bigger and he does not.

Peterman is capable and even good when healthy, that same thing can be said about a lot of players no longer in the league.

Goz is unrealized potential showing occasionally what he could really be but never being able to put it together on a consistent basis.

Sims is solid IMHO.

Backus is what he always has been, adequate.

I see it as 4 of 5 positions that could and should be upgraded and the longer we wait the more painful the transition it will be. It is just astounding to me that Mayhew has put so much into the D line and almost nothing into the O line considering Stafford’s history with us. I expected more this off season, drafts, trades, FAs.

IMHO, O line is a position you put resources into each and every year because the moment one part breaks, the whole unit breaks. This is the ultimate team position in the ultimate team game.

That is what makes upgrading an O-line so tough. Last year, we got Sims, and we were pretty lucky that he gelled so fast and so well. We can’t just stick in 2 or 3 different guys and expect them to have a wonderful season. Its all about cohesion with the O-line.

We can’t just stick in 2 or 3 different guys and expect them to have a wonderful season. Its all about cohesion with the O-line.

So, instead of replacing one part a season, we are letting injuries and age catch up with our line eventually resulting in the inevitable mass replacement that ruins that very cohesion.

I don't know,

those same dominating run teams from the 90’s don’t win like they used to. Schemes have adapted and overcome, and our OL isn’t too shabby at pass blocking and I think they were getting better at running screen plays. But things like this usually come full circle, so maybe we do need an entire reactionary freakout overhaul.

I understand.

And I’m not saying that we’re doing it correctly. I wanted to draft or at least pick up an UDFA Center last year or this year and work him into the first team offense. I honestly think Fox still could be our LT. But I still like Sims, Peterman, and Cherlious(if he’s healthy) for the long haul. I’m not saying we need to draft a C or LT in the first round next year, but we need to do something about it soon.

I do not want people to think I am all against these guys we have now

I just see a trend of resource allotment that does not include the O line and it concerns me.

I firmly believe that game is won in the trenches and only one of our lines has gotten any real love.

We will all have our differing opinions on positional needs, that is just the way fans are. I just wish we would put more of our resources into the O line.

true...

we definitely need to improve at left tackle and center, wouldn’t hurt to focus on the d-backs also, but I think first priority should be investing in the protection of our very expensive quarterback. Staff is great when he’s healthy, so doesn’t it only make sense to make sure he stays that way??

by silver_rush on Aug 10, 2011 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Because his injuries have been either...

A: Flukes
B: His own fault

The Cleveland game, he was running around in the backfield for 6 to 7 seconds before getting hit, so not the O-lines fault. The Bears game was a simple miscommunication between the line, as it was their first game together, and Peppers is going to get his sacks. And in the Jets game, it was a combination of fluke and his own fault, as he tried to run for a first down and didnt slide, therefore landing on his shoulder awkwardly. None of these were the O-lines fault. Now the running game, that’s another story.

I see this next offseason...

being a year we focus on DB and Oline. In what order depends on the way Wright, Houston, and Spievey perform this year. If our defense is top ten in the league, then look for extensions for guys on that side of the ball. Who knows, Berry and Smith may become the next top 5 duo in the NFL.

If that is the case, look for 3 of the first 5 picks to be Oline. Possibly a Center in the first round to give a year to take the job from Dom/learn the offense/learn the NFL. I think a guy like Fox is a long term hope at LT, but the problem is the word “hope”, so a LT could be taken in the first three rounds as well, possibly a diverse guy that at the worst is a solid backup for both tackle spots. Other than that, I would like to see an upgrade over Gandy in the interior (maybe that’s Donald Thomas) as depth.

Now, if Leshoure comes back as good as ever (hope beyond hopes) we can focus on these issues.

by lions_sucker on Aug 9, 2011 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say your correct

I think the interior of our O-Line may be the next area of upgrade.

But this FO isn’t just going to draft a guy at a position out of need or want. They have staight up proved that they are going to draft the BPA regardless of position. So we had better hope and prey that a O-lineman is the BPA when we draft at #32 in the next draft!

Silver I don't know if you posted this before Sean's post

But didn’t we just cut Ballard yesterday?

How many lumps you want Doc?

In regard to Brandon Fisher

since I hate the BC$, I only watch the I-AA playoffs but I remember Brandon Fisher competing for the national title with Montana and the kid is erudite. He knows the game and can only help the Lions if his athleticism is sufficient. I’d love to see the kid succeed!

With Coach Zorro on our side, we will slice opponents to ribbons. Tim Tebow gives me hope and I already have faith and charity in my heart! I see a propitious future rife with Lombardis for our Broncos!

Fisher is a coach

So I don’t think his athleticism really matters.
