Lions Notes: Who Will Start At Right Tackle On Sunday?
- There has been some talk in the last couple of days about how Corey Hilliard could potentially replace Gosder Cherilus as the starting right tackle for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. This is based on Jim Schwartz's refusal to comment on the depth chart, the fact that Hilliard has taken first-team reps this week and Cherilus' awful personal foul penalty at the end of last week's game. Personally I think it's just speculation more than anything, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me if Schwartz benched Cherilus over what transpired in Tampa Bay.
- Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in football if you ask Houston's Andre Johnson.
- Dominic Raiola approves of Tom Brady's call for fans to "start drinking early" and "get nice and rowdy." The Patriots weren't fond of the comments and released a statement about being responsible as damage control, but Raiola thinks it's all about being politically correct. In fact, he said "fans are going to do it anyway, so what's wrong with saying it." He thinks Lions fans should get started around 8:30 a.m. to get ready for the 1 p.m. kickoff.
- With Boise State playing in Toledo on Friday night, Titus Young was able to watch his former team in person.
- Stefan Logan is getting "antsy" over the lack of opportunities to return kicks. Even so, he's not going to get greedy and take one out of the back of the end zone and potentially cost the Lions field position.
- Calvin Johnson is in a new commercial for Brann's Steakhouse and Grille.
- National Football Post recently looked at if Ndamukong Suh is the next Reggie White.

I have to agree
with Andre Johnson :) and really hope Mayhew&company are looking at Olinemen that were game roster cuts from other teams. We strengthen our line and playoffs here we come.
So Titus was in my backyard yesterday?
I live 2 minutes from Toledo’s campus. Oh and Fuck Boise State!
I honestly dont see why people say
Andre is better than Calvin, I actually think people are looking at stats rather than skill, Andre has had 1 B where Calvin has had at least 6 different QB’s. This year will prove that he will get 17+ TD’s and 1300+ yards.
I know I’m a little bit of a homer here, and taking nothing from Andre but Calvin is an extremely rare breed of WR
Andre don't drop balls, period, same with Larry Fitz
Now granted, maybe they dont get to some balls that Calvin does, maybe they don’t put their body out there as hard, but still I think it is because they are perceived to have better hands. Also Andre has lead the league for something like 5 years running or been in the top x percent or something.
I think Calvin will emerge this year and make this a much closer debate, but if you ask me they are 1a, 1b, 1c, and I even put Greg Jennings in there as 1d. Heck I could even go further and add in other guys. To me there are guys on pure talent out there that all bring something special and unique, and on the field, mind you some of them have issues off the field, but on the field even guys like Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall are in that class too. The problem is that some guys just have more stats than others, but all real football guys know that there is only one stat that really matters, wins.
If you ask yourself, if bought an expansion franchise in the NFL, who is the receiver I would put on top of my board. For me it is Calvin Johnson hands down, and that is with home cooking aside.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
At this point in time
Andre is better than Calvin. Calvin’s a close second though.
Personally, I think Jennings is #3.
I would take Calvin over Johnson
I think Calvin does alittle more after the catch than Andre. Plus you just can not ignore the QB situation.

I took that one too, I love them. But the Sanchez one isn’t quite G rated enough for me to show on a public profile. Keep them coming brother, and yes I agree, F%$# Sanchez. Hope you don’t mind.

Why worry about who's better?
Lets just wait for Mayhew to trade a 2014 7th round pick and 3 practice squad guys for him and then we won’t have to worry about it anymore lol. (obviously just kidding around) but heck a guy can dream can’t he?
Andre (as far as I know) and Calvin are both classy guys
Rare to see that in such elite athletes.

When DOES Jim comment on the depth chart in the regular season?
pretty sure it’s never happened. Starting Hiliard would me a mistake IMO, Goz had one bad play, out of 75 snaps. Continuity means a lot on the offensive line, we all know this.

Continuity does mean a lot.
But we’re not talking about some random FA pickup. Peterman and Hilliard have plenty of experience together.

Will Keiland be active tomorrow???
That’s what I want to know. I could really see him paying dividends in this game because I think we’ll be up on the scoreboard for a while and want to kill time.
I’m also a little worried about MoMo if he was telling the truth that his 2 fumbles weren’t a result of his broken hand. I don’t trust a back who fumbles back to back if it wasn’t due to injury…I’d rather see more of Harrison and Keiland then!
The Dis-Assembly Line - The unofficial, official name for the next best D-line in football.
btw
I thought Harrison’s acceleration was really impressive in TB. I could see his style fitting us even more on turf!

agreed, it seems his learning curve/adaptability is quite favorable
will he prove reliable??

ya I'd rather see harrison over morris
but I think Best can carry 20+ every game. Surprised me alot last week
I think harrison over morris for now is fine because clearly he’s still affected by his hand injury. When morris was in the game though, his runs were downright awesome (until he fumbled)

Jason Heyward: Single up the middle, ballgame.
I also question MoMo, not that it's conclusive
He deserves more time ofc, but worth keeping an eye on like I’m sure they are. Having Stovall out for the game, perhaps it could prove beneficial for Keiland. I kind of like the idea of softening up their lb/de with a ram before zipping in with the Best.

Erm
Even if they were a result of his hand, would he say it? No, because it’d make people question if he was brought back too early and if the coaches were desperate. Plus, it’d make him look like he’s making excuses.
I’d bet his hand is still bugging him, but I’m glad he’s not saying it.

Say what you will
But this drinking thing is IMHO really really STUPID ! Thats just my 2 cents but things are already out of hand and to the point last year there was a lot of talk of not being able to bring family because of the drunks .
Starting these guys out early and having players say it is just wrong . again imo maybe some folks do it iam sure they do but theres no reason to toss gas on a fire gotta be the biggest dumb assed thing I have heard in any of the major sports . Just what we need more drunks on the road super drunk . Atleast we lock up the super drunk here in Michigan .
Uh
No one’s going to do anything they weren’t already planning on doing because Tom Brady told them to. He made an off-the-cuff joke of a remark and the political correctness squad has to jump all over him for it. What’s he supposed to say? “Please all come in droves to the stadium, we have ample bottled water!”

I'd have to disagree with you entirely
There are a lot of people that are going to make sure they’re nice and gone because of what Tom Brady said.
That said, I have nothing wrong with what Brady said. If you’re over the age over 21, start as early as you want!
I can say I never considered starting drinking at 830am until I read this. Now that it seems acceptable I am more tempted to get hammered. Luckily I am smart enough to know I enjoy games more when I am sober. However if I was still college age I think I would use it as an excuse to start getting wasted right now
by Staffordno9 on Sep 18, 2011 9:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Equine scatology.
They’re going to make sure they’re nice and gone, but it won’t be because of what Tom Brady said. They might use that as an excuse, but they’re not doing anything they weren’t already open to.
Alcohol at a stadium is expensive. You mean to tell me people are going to spend dozens if not hundreds of extra dollars on $8 beers on Tom Brady’s suggestion? If so, I fully applaud Tom Brady — spend out of a recession, right? Heck, the NFL might turn record profits this year all because of Tom Brady!
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Stadium doesn't open up at 8:30 AM to sell alcohol
They won’t be paying outrageous prices at this point. Staffordno9 already hit the nail on the head. I know several college aged kids that are going over the top right now simply because of what Brady said.
Perhaps you have too much faith in the rational of some people, but I know for a fact that people are going in more than they would have.
And I know for a fact that it's complete hogwash.
If a college kid is going over the top because of what Brady said, then he needs that college education because he’s dumb as a sack of bricks. Something is being made out of nothing here, plainly.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Oh that I don't disagree with
Never said these people are smart. But that doesn’t change the fact that its happening.
That's what I'm saynig.
It’s happening because people are dumb, not because of what Tom Brady said. They’ll cop out and say “oh, Tom Brady told me to do it!” but we all know it’s ridiculous.
Something is being made out of nothing here. Dumb people will be dumb, excuses or not. No one’s going to do anything (being dumb) that they weren’t already planning on doing (being dumb.)

So Gosder get benched and Peterman gets off scott free
Sorry Jimmy not buying that one. Peterman played bad and had a stupid penalty to go with it. WHAT THE H?
LOL....It was only one game.
Damn you guys are antsier then I usually am to make changes.
Let them keep f-en up and then that’s another story.

Peterman's penalty was a picky call.
Yeah he went over the top to clean up the pile, but he barely grazed the defender.
Cherilus, on the other hand, whiffed on a block and then came back late looking to lay a hit on someone to make himself look better. That’s just plain stupid.
No slogans. Just win!!!
I am fine with Hilliard starting
That being said I think this might just be smoke, even though I am a big proponent of not only benching Cherilus but also replacing him. At this point I think I would be happy with a 5th round pick for his useless ass. Hope he makes me regret saying that.
Anyways I think the Lions will play Cherilus, because I am not a coach, and they seem to like him for some reason, even though I do not feel the same way. Well I know why they like him, if that light bulb ever stays on upstairs instead of flickering out he can be a good player for a long time. I just have given up on that and have already moved on in my mind.
Still though, all that being said now, I think that Hilliard playing in practice is two factors. One to send a bit of a message to Gosder, and more importantly, to rest him up. When you have microfracture surgery you have to have managed practices and limited reps. Something that scares me even more as this season goes on as I believe it will lead to even more in game lapses by Gosder.
