You be the GM trade senerio
Well, Lions fans its a beautiful Sunday morning and I have a little trade senerio here for you.
Now I have always been a fan of the Denver Broncos. Thats who i rooted for in the playoffs, always.
But now the situation has seemed to flip.
The Broncos are rebuilding and the Lions are playoff bound. We have a great QB situation and they don't. We have a great coach and they dont. We have a great GM and they dont.
About 4-6 years ago that was oppisite. Now they are trying for youth and potential like we were way back when.
Now i don't think our secondary is complete. At least not the corners. I like Chris Houston and Eric Wright but if i had to pick one, i would take Wright. Our backups, Aaron Berry and Alphonso Smith, are young and have potential(probably too much to trade). Brandon McDonald seems to be the odd man out. While has potential, he just doesnt have enough game yet to beat phonz or Berry for the nickel spot. Seems perfect for the Broncos right?
Well they do still need help at every other position too. We have pretty potential filled linebacks with Isaiah Ekejiuba and Ashlee Palmer. Andre Fluellen and maybe Sammie Lee Hill are the only defensive lineman i would even think about trading.
Anyway, you may ask what this is all about.
Well the Broncos got this lockdown corner named Champ Bailey. He might be old, but is a vet and could be what Charles Woodsen did to the Packers secondary. He can still play and needs a chance to win. And he could mentor our cornerbacks of tomorrow.
I'd say we give it a go, but thats just me. He isn't doin anything good rotting in Denver and if they were really loyal they would give him a chance to win.
I posted a story like this in the Mile High Report. Heres the link

Give them a chance...
Chris Houston and Eric Wright performed well in last week’s game. I feel as though getting a new cornerback would really be insulting and relatively unnecessary. They have yet to do anything that is worth a demotion, so I would be hesitant to tell one of them that they are being replaced with an old, past prime Champ Bailey.
he doesnt have to start
I like Houston and Wright. They played good. im not saying to demote them.
What if we could pull a patriots and give them a 5th and 6th? what that be so bad? i would take Bailey over McDonald or Berry anyday

He is very expensive..
You don’t normally pay someone a whole lot of money to come in and be a backup. He’s starting now on the Broncos, that would be quite a change for someone like him
i think he wants to win
at any cost. lol

How about we just keep this team intact and see what they can do

Meh, nothing wrong with dreaming and thinking about improving, you can never be too good

We don't need a hobbled old CB
He’s having hammy problems, u don’t take chances on old injured guys. Can get lucky with picking up young hurt guys but not old.
Dream up a scenario where we get some monster O-lineman

Poof! I'm the Lions GM
I do NO trades, or think of trades til I see what this team has (week 4/5). So far sooooo good. I am however looking at which teams are going into rebuild mode (Bronco’s being one of them) and keeping an eye on potential “mahew” type victims. Specifically RG, RT, CB, SS, LB, RB, C. These would only be complimentary pieces that could push starters. Oh,and I would take Bailey for one of our cheerleaders…….I guess.
Put me down...Lions win at least 11 games next season! 1/6/11
I happen to agree

I wait til Fairley gets back.
Then trade Fluellen for Champ and a seventh.

yea
If Fluellen turns out to be a all pro and that 7th is a contributor than shame on us haha

No...
They give us the seventh, and Champ, for Flu. Who probably will wind up being a very good starter. But Flu is never going to be a good starter on this d-line with Fairley coming into the rotation, so more power to him if we can get a veteran playmaker on D and another draft pick.

i dont know
the boys at mile high want a draft pick. With Sammie Lee Hill playing great today too, i just dont think there is room for flu.
I would love to have another 7th but you gotta look at both sides of the situation

I guess draft picks are at a premium.
When they’re rebuilding. But really, Champ isn’t going to make it through the rebuild and Flu is absolutely worth more than a seventh. I would consider it a pick well spent on Denver’s part. You either get some random nearly-UDFA with a seventh. or a young DE/DT tweener in Flu. No brainer, not like they’re losing much by getting rid of Champ.

NO WAY
Champ is to old to give up that much. Sammie Lee is much more valueable to this teams future than an old run down corner who still has his days. Maybe I’d give them Fluellen and a 2013 late pick. SLH no way in hell.

I like our team
- played awesome today. I think the only one needing mentoring is the opposing QB trying to find time to throw at our corners. Seriously though the Lions have age at some positions but I don’t see old quality corners in this league.
the team did play good today
but we beat them almost the same score as the Bills-Cheifs game so im not surprised.
Our defense did get turnovers too

A 10 point differential is nowhere close to the same score.
But yeah, I’m not surprised. We ARE better than Buffalo, even though Buffalo is solid.

This is an interesting thought, but I think Champ has aged too much to be worth it
He is still a decent corner and I can see where you are going with this thought. He is probably still as good as Woodson IMO. So still an impact player. The issue for me is that there have been guys out there who had a similar skill set and veteran leadership presence that we have passed on like Nate Clemens. Honestly I was a bit bummed that we did not go for Carlos Rogers but given the cap situation I am all right with rolling the dice on Aaron Berry and Alphonso Smith. Sure I get nervous as hell when they are out there, but I see some huge upside in Berry and while Phonz has some serious limitations I do believe that he is quality depth and a very good dime back.
As for McDonald, I like him too. I feel bad for him not getting the starting nickel spot, but I do see where Berry has elements to his game that put him ahead. For the life of me I still cannot figure out why Smith may start ahead of him or Berry, but c’est la vie. I just have to trust in the coaches.
I can see the coaches riding out the roster for now and re-evaluation at about week 4 just before the trade deadline. At that point is when they will decide if there is a trade to be made. For my money though, if I am upgrading anywhere it is on that offensive line, at center or on the right side with Peterman and or Cherilus. To me that is the clear cut weakest link on our current roster and those guys impact many more snaps in a much larger way than our 3rd defensive back IMO.
This week in the first half I got very nervous, Stafford got pretty beat up and took a lot of hits in this game. Luckily they seem to have tightened things up a bit in the second half.

yea i agree with all of it
