Sober up Lions!

As we Lion fans are giddy from the 2-0 start and the MSM feeds our confidence on a daily basis.... I'd like to point out a few bad habits that will cost the Lions a win if not corrected.

Star-divide

1. QB play; 2 weeks in a row, 2 picks in the 1st quarter. 2 picks thrown off target... one was a deflection, one was an air ball because of pressure. One cost the Lions 6pts, the other was about to do the same had it been any team other than KC(who couldn't hang on to the ball to save their life)

2. Rush Defense; Okay in Week 1 as TB only ran it 11 times(?)... Blount still had 5yds/carry... Horrible in week 2 until Roary, the mascot, put an end to Charles's season (that's a joke people). 6 carries for 65 yards is inexcusable... especially in a row, on the same drive.

3. Slow offensive starts and Special teams, ugh. One improved, the other regressed, you be the judge. Bottom line is, The Lions have left a LOT of points on the field in the this season. The 3 and outs have to stop. Reviewing the length of drives in the KC game... it was pathetic. (thanks again KC)

All in all, the first 2 must improve. Stafford needs to learn when to take a sack and when to throw it away. The Rush Defense, I expect to improve week by week as the LBers start to gel with the D Line. But make no mistake about it... The Lions are not there, yet. Their play hasn't been consistant enough to be in the 'contender' catagory, yet. Key word is... YET.

The Lions are only 2-0... Yet hasn't happened, Yet.

On a side note, here's to "YET" happening this weekend and kicking the crap out of the Vikings and ending the 14yr MetroDome losing streak!!!

Go Lions!

Watch film today. Wasn’t to pretty even after a big win yesterday. Fix it for next game.

I wasn’t very impressed either with that high school INT either. Stafford’s a smart kid, he’ll clean it up, his inexperience has shown through a time or two in between some fantastic QB play.

They went outside with those 1st quarter runs. It was Levy that had a horrible 1st quarter, not the D-line. They stepped it up when the ball stayed between the hashmarks.

The other mistakes? Shoot, from where we came from to where were at now, there’s no doubt that they’ll clean it up bit by bit during the season.

yeah.

I think it was the first run off the weak side by Charles that Levy was charging into the backfield looked like he didn’t even know Charles had the ball when the ran past each other. Levy was literally the player right next to Charles and didn’t even reach out an arm for a tackle. Levy stopped, turned, and had to try to catch up to Charles from behind…

It looked really bad.

The Chiefs had a lot of Gimmick run plays.

I wouldn’t bash the run defense just yet. The Chiefs still had Jones, McLain, and McCluster, that’s not a shabby backfield.

On top of that our defense has forced a massive amount of turnovers.

Unless I’m playing Madden on Rookie, I don’t expect the score to be 150-0. There’s no doubt, there’s room for improvement, but after said improvement there will be more mistakes that need to be improved upon.

In conclusion, Carry-on with your drunkeness. That is all.

So far I'm chalking all that up to the short camp...

This will be a very dangerous game anyhow. The Vikes are a wounded animal right now but not wounded so bad they can’t come out fighting playing at home for a testy crowd. They will see this game as a “must win” and play like it.

Any casualness by the Lions could make it a long day. McNabb can piece together a great performance when his back is against the wall.

That was the McNabb of about five years ago.

I understand that a lot of fans don’t want to go all in on the Lions just yet, but why do these same Lions fans give our upcoming opponents all this love?

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 19, 2011 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not love, it's a realistic caution.

We’ve been burned SO many times that it’s too easy to get hyped up over 2 wins and start shotgunning Kool-Aid. McNabb is 1 year removed from piecing together convincing wins in a tough division. We’re not saying the Vikings are Gods, we’re just saying slow the hell down before the cart ends up in front of the horse. Otherwise, when we finally start losing games (and we will), and God forbid, lose them in an ugly manner, then this huge shrine of expectations you’ve set up for yourself will shatter. And how many (more) times can that happen before you finally just give up all together?

It’s not love for the enemy, it’s not doubt in the Lions, it’s cautious optimism. Nothing more.

by mrbusto71 on Sep 20, 2011 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I lost my caution after the KC game, and I've been burned along with everyone else following this team through the years.

But the past is past, and I truly believe Schwartz has wiped away the organizational demons of the past with this team. That’s one smart guy who knows how to keep this team pointing in one direction. Read their Tweets, I haven’t seen one tweet of anything other the post game happiness. Nothing to suspect their getting big heads.

I don’t expect this team to contend for the Super Bowl this season, but I do expect them to take the important step of learning how to win tough games, and tough games on the road, play smart, which Schwartz is showing is a critical component this season, and possibly get into the playoffs. I thought 10-6 at best, and were on our way. But more importantly I expected a return to year after year of NFL caliber football being played with a program that looks like they have a clue. I’d say they have filled most of the bill. So why shouldn’t I go gaga, and enjoy the team in a sport I love? Finally

No more holding back. And to those that think this means you can’t be critical of the team even though you’ve bought all in, that’s just plain ole being mistaken. Every team has warts, and every team can play better, this isn’t Lions specific, and hashing it over is part of it.

A tough opening game road win, and a IMO trap game won in convincing manner is all I needed. Time to enjoy it and be a fan.

I actually do believe we can contend for the Super Bowl if we stay healthy

I mean sure we already have some losses in injury, but I mean going forward

See Smurfer,,,that's another reason to get excited.....We have had injuries and haven't missed a beat.

If you really sit down and look at this team and how it’s now built with their adaptability, it would take some serious injuries to not keep this team playing at a high level.

Don’t laugh at me now……I don’t think losing Stafford would be the death of this teams season, or CJ, or SUH.

I’m not ready for the Super Bowl talk only because I think it takes a year of learning how to win, and getting some experience before actually doing it.

.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?

Well our depth at guard and center is concerning, along with the secondary on defense

Other injuries we could probably get by, or gimp by. But also on offense we have a blessed trinity, that we need to stay healthy, Stafford, Best, Johnson. Other guys can rotate a bit, and their loss will be heavily felt, but those kinds of losses would be insurmountable. Probably more Stafford and Johnson because they are so special, and Best is too, don’t get me wrong, but there is not much behind Best in that backfield.

Best is a huge weapon

But with Titus starting to come on – there’s another element demanding attention. I think between Harrison and Logan, a bit of Jahvid’s skill set could be substituted (though not at the same rate of impact).

We’ve shown we can get by without CJ and Stafford – but with either of them gone, so is our explosion and dynamic ability on offense…

We’d have to count on very strong performances from our D to a lot of games – which I’m not ruling out at this point, I’m just a tad more uncertain about how good our D will be from week to week (it seems like some matchups really favor us while others ought to be able to take advantage of our weaknesses).

The special thing about our offense, when healthy, is there appears to be no real matchup up problems that opposing teams can present that really can slow down our attack. The only thing to slow it IMO is bad Oline and QB play…

Re: Best

I almost thing that it’s a given he’ll be dealing with injuries at various points this year.
He’s had concussions in the past and those can happen more easily afterwards. He also isn’t the biggest back and he’s gunna be getting a majority of the touches out of our backfield. Hopefully he won’t be out for multiple weeks at any point, but I can see 3 or 4 games where he doesn’t play or plays very little and we need to count on MoMo, Harrison, and/or Williams.

by freywagg on Sep 20, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been listening to this weeks Schwartz interviews.(just got done with one)

He is completely now downplaying running the ball. he basically is saying who cares how we move the ball or score and as we do. He’s counting the short quick passes almost as a running play.

Now this is a serious development, since it should sound the death bell to trying to get a ground game going before establishing the pass. That made zero sense to me last season.

39 passing yards week one is piecing together convincing wins..I dont even know how that happens in the course of 4 quarters.Im not saying go all in on the lions winning the division even though i feel they are capable. What i am saying is just like the cheifs everyone is giving them unwarranted praise.Look at Minne’s stats and gametime plays…horrendous.

by Michael21 on Sep 20, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree there are things to work on

Need to get off to better starts sometimes, especially on the road. Stafford has always had a propensity to make bad plays. He’s greatly improved in that area – i think he’ll continue to get better, but he’ll still make mistakes…he is still very young (23) and relatively unexperienced for an NFL QB…

I believe the run D will get better. They adjusted very well after the first qtr. But there are weakness in our scheme they will leave us exposed to some of the better running teams (if they attack us properly). I’m not concerned about it being a liability though like it was last year, where teams could just run it down our throat, score TDs, and run out the clock…

the wide 9 technique

leaves easy access for the guards to get to 2nd level. hence making good running lanes for the good run teams to expose. Everyone saw it in the Eagles Falcons game last night. The LBers cant come crashing into those gaps until they are positive the runner is gonna run inside. Im not a coach or an expert but thats how i see the weakness of the wide 9 technique. I was gonna post something about this wide 9 thing a few weeks ago and how it leaves the guards free to get to 2nd level. But my questions were answered in last nights game. Its a good thing our LBers are quick

Yeah, we played bad…what a ridiculous statement when your team just got dismantled by 45 points. How many games a year in a league of equality have 45 point separations?

That right there is proof he is just spilling sour grapes over the loss.

by delusional on Sep 19, 2011 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

His points.

1. There’s a reason they’re called takeaways; because we took them.

2. The passing game was a liability because of our front seven and heads up coverage. They’re a run first team, our team is built to make you pass and then beat you with it. Obviously their passing game was a liability.

3. If KC’s main goal was to stop the run against a passing offense, then they game planned terribly and Haley SHOULD be fired.

4. They got some pressure, but Stafford was who beat you. He made the correct throwaways and bootlegs and the right reads. Props to them for forcing him to throw an INT.

5. 2 TDs is never the best of a matchup with any player. Ever. Flowers also got exposed against a couple of our lesser receivers.

6. The safeties weren’t as bad as advertised, that’s correct. So why isn’t this guy giving any credit to the Lions for handing it to them?

7. I don’t know if 48 is quite the tune of “some”, but sure.

8. Yeah, you helped us out with penalties and we did our job and beat you in the mouth with it.

So sure, he made a couple good points and showed that the KC Chiefs probably aren’t as bad as their record indicates, but none of that detracts from what the Lions did to them. I’ve seen 5 turnover games with terrible penalties that didn’t wind up 48-3.

Not too concerned about the run defense

KC had a good game plan. They ran alot of misdirection and counter gap runs. Sprinkled in with some nice end-arounds to their split end and wideouts. Exactly what you want to do against a fast, aggressive defense. The good news is that their are not to many shifty runningbacks like Charles in the league. And as far as the Vikes go. OC Mugrave like to run a man on man blocking scheme, with straight ahead running. Like he did in Atlanta, Washington, and in Jacksonville. Much like what we saw in TB.

Personally though I would like to see more of the Jackson/Sammie Lee combo in on obvious running situations. IMO they are very good against the run.

by rames on Sep 19, 2011 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree there are things we can improve upon

but I don’t really agree with the bad habits you listed.

1) QB Play: Staffords pick in the Tampa Bay game was very unlucky. It was an inaccurate throw, but 99% of the time it sails out of bounds. The interception in the KC game was definitely a very bad play. However, his overall play has been great. He’s 4th in the league in passer rating and ESPN’s QBR. The exciting thing is that he hasn’t played his best ball yet he’s played at an elite level so far.

2) Run defense: I don’t know if we have a good run defense, but I don’t think we can conclude it’s a weakness. First of all Blunt actually averaged 3 YPC. There’s no denying the first quarter against KC was bad, but in the other 7 quarters our run defense has been very good. Tampa running backs gained 2.5 YPC on 11 carries. In the last 3 quarters KC averaged 3.27 YPC on 18 rushes. The stats wouldn’t be as good if Charles didn’t get hurt but there wasn’t a lot of running room in those last 3 quarters. It’s also worth noting that KC and Tampa Bay (once they had Blount) were two of the best run offenses in the league last year.

3) Agreed on the slow starts. We settled for field goals early against Tampa Bay and had 3 and outs on 3 of our first 4 drives against KC. The kick return against TB is the only bad play I can think of from our Special Teams. Hanson is still money and Donahue has been great. I would like to see some more from our punt return team. No big run backs for Logan yet.

IMO the thing we need to improve upon most is our rush offense. The run game is devalued in today’s game, but it would be nice to see a better rushing attack. An effective running game would take our offense to another level.

We also need to improve our offensive play on 3rd downs. We’re only 7 for 26 (27%). There’s way too much talent on offense for us to convert at that rate. I definitely think we’ll improve here as the season goes on.

by Stones1981 on Sep 19, 2011 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

well put

agree that 3rd downs (particularly 3rd and short) should improve and need to be a major point of focus to improve in the upcoming weeks.

I hope Keiland can be a positive part of the solution to getting a more consistent rushing attack. He’s definitely a role player, but I like his toughness and don’t think we should experience many tackles for loss if we use him correctly – unlike Harrison and Best who go down behind the line too often (though I realize that’s not much of their fault).

OK, so there are things to work on...

Out of the 32 teams in the NFL there are 32 of them that will tell you they have things to work on. So what. I don’t want the Lions to peak now. It is much too early for that. I am fine that the team is making some mistakes and leaving some points on the field, as long as th3ey are still getting wins. I hope that continues until just before the playoffs, then the Lions can peak and have their run of perfectly played games when it really counts.

You know your team has turned the corner when you can win games even though you don’t play perfectly. Tell me when is the last time you have been able to say the Lions have a few things then need to fix, then look at the score sheet and see that they won by 45 points.

We are in uncharted ground for a Lions fan here. I am not talking about a 2-0 start, we have seen that before. I am talking about the sheer potential of this team, which is very high indeed.

and I do not think he is wrong either. KC gift wrapped this game and handed it too us on a silver platter. Good teams do what we did, take advantage of the other teams mistakes and that is all we really are. A good team, nothing even close to great or elite. We have not even really been tested yet. The two teams we beat were more illusion “good teams” from last year that both benefited from soft schedules.

Tuffy, relax, no one is knocking the Lions.

.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?

by delusional on Sep 19, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I am with Tuffy here. Since when did Lions fans care about style points on wins?

I asked last year how people would judge the Lions at the end of the year and a bunch of you said Wins and Losses only. Now that they are winning [two and oh last I looked] you are griping about bad habits, poor play calling, etc.

I continue to struggle to understand you guys that want to look for reasons why this team will ultimately fail and is undeserving of any credit for winning their last six regular season games; which includes four wins over teams that were 10-6 in 2010, one of them the Super Bowl winner. And three games on the road.

As Tuffy said, this team is by far the most talented Lions team I have ever seen. And I have been a fan since 1968. The main reason is Stafford and Calvin. We have never had a pair of talents like this that can complement each other and allow each other to reach their full potential. To be blunt, the real main reason is Matthew Stafford. We have never had a QB like this in Detroit. Nobody even close.

Sure he is not perfect. I am sure he will have a lot worse games than the one against the Chiefs. But he can also be much better. And Mayhew has surrounded him with some very complementary talent that can allow him to be successful. That includes a coach and OC that can teach him and use him to his full abilities.
I hear the griping about what we don’t do well, but I disagree that it is critical to our future success. What is critical is that this team gets better at what they are supposed to do very well [pass the ball, rush the passer, special teams] so that we are able to impose our will on our opponents and not react to what they do.

This year is the start of a great ride for Lions fans [IMO] and I will stick to my preseason prediction of 12 and 4.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

i dont care how we do it or how we do it.... but at the end of the 4th quarter we have more points than the other team.

there is always going to be talk about what we need to do better and how we need to improve to win and all that… personally i wish some would relish the success a lil more rather than getting cranky bout the next opponent. but if we were all the same this site wouldnt be nearly as fun as it is.

For the most part I agree with you except i predicted 11-5

Different situation, remember, were not looking back any longer. The expectations are higher, not one person on this site wants or expects this team to fail. Completely incorrect assessment, NL.
I asked last year how people would judge the Lions at the end of the year and a bunch of you said Wins and Losses only. Now that they are winning [two and oh last I looked] you are griping about bad habits, poor play calling, etc.

Every team has warts, we are not any different. Now your overreacting to people not unequivocally not smooching them up? If everyone just sits around circle jerking and reach arounding in agreement, then what would there be to talk about?

Your being ridiculous now.

I've been on vacation.

Been up at my 2nd home in northern MI until yesterday. The salmon runs are happening, caught a load during the past week, time to get the deer spot settled, and shooting lanes cut.

But back home now.

Amber Bock is decent.

Some kiddie type hunt is going on now. Michigan is a hooker for hunting license fees.so there's weird stuff all of the time.

That has to be some beautiful hunting country. My shot here has to be 60 yards max, there it has to be 300 yards easy.

Don't mean to stifle criticism and debate as that is what this is all about here.

But I have a problem with the constant negativity regarding this team’s accomplishments.

ie. KC handed us that game.
ie. We have not beaten a real playoff team yet this year because those two 10 and 6 teams from 2010 were not real playoff teams, even though one was.
ie. We almost blew the Tampa Bay game although last year our close losses did not count as almost wins.

I have no problem with criticism and debate over the games, but I am irritated with the debates being prefaced by a downgrading of what this team accomplished. I expect that coming from other, non Lions fans [though I have not heard them say anything like that] but not from our own fans. Its pathologically negative. A lot of people excuse that with the weak excuse [IMO] that Lions fans have been burnt before, getting behind a team and then seeing it blow up in our faces. Which fan base hasn’t?

Enjoy the games and the season guys however you want, if you get off continually mocking and deriding this team, than go ahead. Your nickel.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

I agree with everything but #2

Jamaal Charles went out during their first drive of the game, and was one of five guys who got rushing attempts in the first Q. KC hit us with gimmick run plays and surprised us, but those gimmick run plays stopped working after the first quarter because it’s not that easy to keep fooling us. Hell, Dwayne Bowe got a 12 yard rush on one of those gimmicks. Jamaal Charles had two carries. He broke a clean one off left-tackle for some yardage and then accomplished a 3 yard run. I’m sorry, I don’t buy that he would have kept gashing us all game if he had stayed in. Everyone gashed us that first drive, it was excellent playcalling and execution on KC’s part, and then we put a stop to the nonsense.

a couple ?

seriously 3rd down conversion is terrible, last year even w/ out Stafford they managed a 40-41% ratio. Good teams will make the Lions failure to convert work against them. If there’s two stats in the Vikings game i want to see the improved most its 3rd down conversion and rushing for no less than 4-4.5 yards per carry .

id rather be airing it out and be winning than having a great 3rd %

I mean seriously you want to hill over stafford because of a stat line… Really??? We had a few 70+ drives in the TB game that got screwed into field goals just relax

not sure what you mean by hill over Stafford

all i was saying is that the Offense needs to shape this up big time in reference to 3rd down conversion. In those games coming up against Dallas, Bears, Falcons, 49ers, Packers and probably a couple more im missing will make you pay. I understand that they are just now starting to get into all the motions on offense but this stat at 27% or so is not a good one and shows a great weakness to the team. They rely on too many “big plays”, take away those big plays and fail to convert on 3rd down and what do you get a team that cant move the ball otherwise.

The expectations for this team are ridiculous.

We aren’t elite, so the team is going to have holes. Hell, even elite teams have holes.

I don’t see why we can’t be optimistic despite a couple weak points. We just beat a team by 45 points. Forty Five.

So what's wrong with mentioning the weak points?

I'd hardly call them high school type interceptions.

I’m just saying you have to deal with it. Every team makes bad plays. People don’t need to get overdramatic and say that we desperately need to fix every mistake in order to be a good team

by Scout Taron on Sep 19, 2011 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?, his INT was just a tough pass, with a good play made by the CB? Not a wounded duck, while in the grasp?

yes thats when people say stafford better clean his game up

We shouldn't have to recover from it, that's that point.

Look, INT’s happen, every QB throws them. But in the grasp wounded ducks are not cool and can’t continue if you eventually want to get to the next level. It’s inexperience, nothing more. I thought it showed at times with Stafford on Sunday.

And the only reason I’m talking about it, is because I have high hopes eventually for this team.

I don't know,

in both games we’ve scored 20 points by half time. I don’t see how that is considered getting off to a slow start? I mean, I guess I see the potential in this team for them to score every time they get the ball, but if you set the standard to compare yourself to the Pats and GB, the Pats scored 14 and 20, and GB scored 28 and 7 in their first halves.
