The nominees for FedEx's Air and Ground Players of the Week came out on Tuesday. One of the three quarterbacks up for the Air Player of the Week is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who completed 23-of-39 passes on Sunday for 294 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Stafford helped lead the Lions to a 48-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs and put up big numbers for the second week in a row. In fact, the Lions haven't had this many touchdown passes in the first two weeks of the season since 1962, according to NFL.com. On an individual basis, Stafford has now thrown for four touchdowns in three of his first 15 starts. The only other player in NFL history to do that, according to the Lions' Twitter account, is Fran Tarkenton.
The other nominees for the Air Player of the Week are New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Brady went 31-of-40 for 423 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers and Romo completed 20-of-33 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-24 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.
The Ground Player of the Week nominees are Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount, Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson and Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner.
