Lions Sign Tim Toone To Practice Squad, Release Donovan Warren

The Detroit Lions made a change to their practice squad today. They released former Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren and signed wide receiver Tim Toone.

Toone was released by the Lions during the final round of NFL roster cuts. I figured he would be added to the practice squad shortly after he was released, but the Lions went in a different direction by keeping wide receiver Nate Hughes and signing a bunch of players released by other teams. Toone is back now, though.

Warren was one of the players brought in from another team. He was released by the Steelers during the final round of roster cuts after reportedly having a pretty strong training camp, and he is now once again a free agent.

The eight players currently on the Lions practice squad are WR Nate Hughes, WR Tim Toone, TE Nathan Overbay, OT Casey Bender, C Dan Gerberry, DE Kyle Moore, DT Corvey Irvin and S Ricardo Silva.

Surprised

Thought we’d keep a spare cornerback since we have a spare WR in Hughes. Here’s to staying healthy in the defensive backfield.

What a disapointment

Donovan Warren turned out to be..Uof M coaches were comparing him to Charles Woodson when he first arrived.

I think that the Dick Rod Defensive scheme really hurt his growth. Plus, didnt he leave early? in retrospect he prolly shouldnt have

He did leave early

which turned out to be a really bad idea, considering he went undrafted.

But you can’t blame him for all of the hype, it’s not his fault that all of the recruiting sites gave him a five-star rating, or that people were already proclaiming him a future NFL Pro Bowler when he was still in High School. Yes, he had the talent to be great, but the dude also had a tremendous amount of pressure to succeed at an early age. Some people just can’t handle that shit.

I'd rather have Michael Brewster.

But if we’re talking WRs, Jeff Fuller all the way IMO.

I was trying to stick with a Gamecock theme haha

But I like Alshon a little more…Fuller seems a little bit faster but Alshon’s got the crazy hands/shiftiness. He reminds me a lot of Larry Fitzgerald

Who'd have thought

We’d now be wishing for the Lions to draft another WR?

by mcivor on Sep 22, 2011 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Gotta draft someone, right?

There’s not a lot of positions that are a huge need anymore, now it’s just a matter of continuing to turn the roster over and get younger at positions.

Well the thing is

I doubt we pick early enough to get Alshon. Jeff Fuller’s got the size and the hands and the YAC to be our next Burleson, basically.

To be honest, moves like this mystify me.

It’s the practice squad, after all. Did Warren just not practice well enough? And you just replaced a DB with a WR.

No matter, I’m happy that Tim is getting his chances again.

No slogans. Just win!!!
