Hello PoD and Fuck Mark Sanchez. I know it's Wednesday already and I wanted to post this earlier in the week so I didn't look like a ripoff artist, but life happened. So it goes. Anyway, my week 2 observations after the jump.
The defense. After getting gashed on edge running plays in the first quarter adjustments were made and they proceeded to stifle the Chiefs running game. As this is the Chiefs strength, that directly led to that extremely lopsided final score. The only thing I didn't like other than the temporary weakness with stopping off tackle runs, was our tendency to over run plays. This contributed to some of KC's early success in the run game. I love our speed on defense. I just think it can be controlled a little bit better which should result in headaches for opposing teams.
Special teams was solid.
Coaching. We stayed aggressive for longer in this game which addressed my main complaint from last week. If we had called aggressive plays this deep into the game last week the score would have been very similar to this week's. Regardless, the play calling stayed aggressive, we annihilated the Chiefs, and most importantly the coaches put in the backups when the game became completely out of reach for KC. I like this as it will preserve the health of our key starters.
All in all I'm pleased with the performance of the Lions again, even more so than last week. We have a 2-0 start under our belts which is awesome. As usual, there are a few things that could be improved, but that list is shrinking as the Lions continue to practice and play together. This week's game up in Minny is even more of trap game scenario than the game against the Chiefs was. The Vikes could easily be 2-0 if not for second half collapses. Sound like any team we used to know? They have an obvious running threat with AP and if Mcnabb and his wideouts can gel even a little bit they'll have at least a decent passing game as well. I still see a victory for us this weekend, but it will by no means be as easy or as lopsided as this past weeks. Until next time, GO LIONS!!!!
