Some general thoughts on the Vikings

Theres a few reasons I don't see the Vikings as much of a threat. At the top of that list is not having any real threats in the reciver corp. Sure Harvin is a fine compliment peice but with no Sidney Rice or any true number one threat I do see them as serious contender in the NFC anymore. Peterson is without question the most elite back in the NFC. They not only rely on him to take pressure off the QB and put up points they need to now lean on him more than ever. We have had issues with Peterson before but to tell the truth we have never been owned by him in any game. Before we always played the Vikings very well until halftime. We are a much more complete team though now and can play 4 quarters. The Vikings have a chance in this game but all do respect they have nothing that scares me.

Star-divide

Peterson will be the X factor of this up comming game. If we can contain him for 60 minutes this game will never get out of hand for us. Tulloch and Durant have been great additions to the linebacking corp we need them to play at a high level this weekend if we hope to keep AP to under 5 yards a carry. Kevin Williams is finally back but one has to imagine not in the greatest shape. With no Edwards Jared Allen has to bring most the pressure by himself.  The defense as a whole is solid but again nothing that should scare you anymore. Now for the most important part of the Vikings team. Quarterback Donovan Mcnabb there is no way all of will see eye to eye on this matter but these are my thoughts. Not excuses just watching tape what I have seen and heard from professionals that cover football. Mcnabb is being reigned in and thats not his style of ball. They need to free him up let him move around the pocket more and throw the deep balls. Mcnabb isn't you regular 3 step drop QB. In ways alot like Favre he makes things happen but you need to give him more freedom so he can do that. First and formost though his widerecivers are not getting seperation. He constantly throws into coverage because he has to. Were a guy like Rice could cause problems in the secondary and could get open constantly. None of the guys on the Vikings current roster seems to have the abillity to get into space. Thus the constant incomplete passes this isn't all on Mac5 he isn't getting much help out there. Shaincoe has been almost invisible either the Vikings are not using him when they call plays or Shaincoe is simply not making himself a viable target either. As the best member of the reciver corp IMO they need to look at the TE much more often right now. Like Brent Celek Mcnabb has proven he can do some good things with an athletic TE.

This game means more than just the Lions trying to win in Minnesota. The first divison game of the year for us sets up an run we might have at greenbay who is still tops in the NFC north.  Mcnabb has to show in the next 2 weeks I belive that he can improve the play of the offense or Ponder will be throwin to the dogs so to speak. I don't in anyway expecta replay of the Redskins game last year. We caught number 5 at his lowest of lows but it Minnesota can't protect him and give him good play at the reciver position. This game could get ugly by halftime. Expect to see plenty of AP and TG early on but if we can contain them and make them trow the ball. I just don't know if the Vikings have the weapons to match up with Stafford , Calvin and company. We beat Tampa Bay in Tampa they lost to the Bucs up north. They did ok against Mike Williams they could take him out of the game though. Calvin Johnson is no Mike Williams. I am not sure they have anything in the secodary to contain Calvin and still keep Nate under wraths. We need Keiland Williams to step in and bring the power game in this matchup. Best has been spectacular but we can't rely on him to be the only back this season.

This Lions and Vikings matchup seems to be the most favoring for us in more than 10 years. A victory is surely not out of the question. I have to give the Vikings there do they have a chance. Where there is Peterson and Mcnabb there is a will to win and the leadership to do so. I am just not sure that all the neccesary tools are there to make it happen. I am not a fan of the Vikings but on the outside I see a situation that Brad Childress has created that dosen't bouge well for them in the coming seasons. They are still in the mode of winning a championship NOW. When I feel they need to be in a complete rebuilding stage and let the youth movement take over. They have a good QB prospect, AP and Harvin it's gonna take alot more than that to compete in this divison now. It's the perfect time to rebuild while you still have vetran leaders around to help in the process. Just one mans opinion I am a Lions fan so the more they lose the better off we are. No offense to anyone on the Vikings team ( Other than Jared Allen) but I think the windows closed...It's time to find another way out. I like the coaching staff and I think Ponder fits the west coast system very well. He has an great tutor in Mcnabb and it is time for them to start looking to the future. Continue grooming Ponder under #5 but I think the expectations for this team need to be pulled in and kept in check. They are no longer super bowl bound. I think they will battle Chicago for last place in the NFC north.

I said much the same in my Weekend Spotlight post this week...

I agree that stopping Peterson is one of the keys to the game for the Lions. I also agree that the WR corp in Minnesota is less than spectacular, to say the least. I believe the spotlight should be on Jeff Backus this week, and whether or not he still has what it takes to stop an all pro DE from killing his QB.

Check out my new blog, "The Mane Attraction", featuring TCLion and I as authors at talknfl.blogspot.com, home of the Weekend Spotlight and much more!

Any given Sunday

I believe the Lions are going to win, but the Vikings are always a tough match-up.
Gotta contain AP and Harvin. Their TE play hasn’t been good this year but I think the Lions can keep them in check.
McNabb is done. I always liked him, he’s had a nice career and seems like a helluva a good guy, but he’s done as a starter. The Vikes might as well start the kid and prep for the future. Ponder is going to be really good down the road. His arm doesn’t WOW people, but he has IT between the ears.
Their D isn’t as scary as it used to be. Douchebag Jared Allen is still really good and they get KW back, but the D-line is in a transition stage. The LBers are good but the secondary is getting old

Robison is a better pass rusher than edwards and just because this is in the Metrodome I say the Vikings win 24-23

Nice thing about Minny is their stubborness and predictability

They havent and wont pay the least bit of attention to anything other than the past. They beat us before and they will beat us again. Why? Well because they have beat us before. And we are just the Lions.

Every year we yap and yap and every year we go home with a loss. Thats all most of these guys know. They’ve beat us there since they were little kids and thats the way it is. It wont be till sometime in the third quarter that the fact they are going to lose will penetrate that thick Nordic brain case. (Im Scandihoovian, Norwegian extraction, so I know all about what it takes to get a new thought inside 6 inches of bone lattice) They will at that point come to the conclusion the game is rigged, (the Raiders fans paranoia has nothing on the average Vike fan) that the League hates them, load up a triple shot of Aquavit and go work on the snow mobile.

is it Sunday yet ? ....

seriously the anticipation is kicking my end this week, and its not just because of the Lions its because for the first season in a while the parody of the league and whats going on w/ teams is so damn exciting to watch this year.

btw great write up and agree except one thing … sitting McNabb. Honestly I think Ponder should sit most of the season and not get thrown to the wolves. Give him his year to develop and learn from McNabb even if its a beating a dead horse season. Sub him in late games and give him some late season starts maybe after week 10-12. They wont need to be in the Lucky race this season and can go for someone else like Blackmon(? ie) if he’s eligible in the draft for that Receiver they need.

(disclaimer not saying they cant win this game just a thought process here)
Ill go a little further and its talked about a lot in some circles about the psyche of losing mentality. In hind sight McNabb has been losing since before he left Philly so to speak and it wasnt just on the field. It continued when he felt unwanted in Washington and technically that aura has followed him to the Vikings where he is in his make it or break it season thats a lot to swallow. The Vikings learned last season that they even w/ Favre were “no better than Detroit”. and that losing has continued. So now they are in a definitive must WIN game so what happens if they lose. That mentality will continue until they win once and string together consecutive wins before that mentality will change. Its the old Lions psyche actually. However if they can pull off the upset (yes they are underdogs this year for sure) then maybe it would boost them to contend as well as the Lions are a good team this year. Detroits best bet, win in the Metrodome and make them a non factor.

Good luck in the game

and here’s to hoping that Musgrave will be less than predictable when it comes to playing you guys. Honestly right now you are a better team than we are, however, I still don’t think that’s going to offer you up a garunteed win. I’ve seen crappy Detroit teams beat good Vikes teams in Detroit, I’ve seen crappy Vikes teams beat Green Bay in the Dome.

The beauty of divisional games is everyone plays at a different level and it makes it difficult to predict the out come. Right now keeping everyone healthy I think you’ll guys will come in second in the division and eke out a wild cart spot. I do think that the Vikes have a chance this week and I’m hoping they make the best of it.

By the way we did stop the receivers from Tampa pretty much, but what you might not know is we also pretty much neutered the Vincent Jackson Rivers thing as well, and while you may not respect Freeman I’d think you’d respect Rivers.

Good luck and here’s hoping Stafford doesn’t get broked!

I'm like the Dali Lama of kicking ass

by Grime on Sep 22, 2011 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

I personally respect Freeman

he’s a playmaker.

And that’s a good point about division games. It seems everybody plays a bit above their level for those matchups.

One intangible that I don’t think works in your favor is our losing streak in the dome. This team has been on a mission to break all those “same old Lions” streaks that Schwartz and co. have been passed down.

Conversely, I’m a bit afraid of McNabb. I think he’s still got something left, and I don’t know when, but I think he’s gonna have a monster game one of these weeks. Especially if everybody is writing him off. I just hope it’s not this week…

Good Luck to you too!
And here’s hoping Musgrave will be MORE than predictable! lol

I do think this game has the potential to be just as bad for the Vikings as it was for the Chiefs last week. This team has it all. The FO, coaches, and players to be great. Not only do the Lions have two of the top ten players i the league right now imo (Suh and Johnson) and the young qb with the highest ceiling ( I don’t give a shit what that little bitch Trent Dilfer says) but they have some of the best complementary players in the NFL also. More importantly they have the “killer” mindset and they have the schemes and skill to do just that. I touched on how the whole being satisfied thing did not worry me in the least on another post last night. Right now the Lions are the unstoppable force and MN sure as hell is not the immovable object. Not saying the Lions won’t be beat, of course they will. Just not by MN

I would think you’d understand that. Interesting how nice and generous you are though.

The Lions are by no means unbeatable. The Vikings are in a rebuilding year and I have no problem with that Childress was a cancer on our development and TJ was an anchor around our necks. Free of both of them I think the Vikes have a good chance to go a long way.

I'm detoxing from the Kool-aid

Last week I predicted 31-3 and I was a little off on the offensive side of the ball, but how was I to know the secondary was going to intercept the ball 3 times?

This week I’m predicting more of the same. Look, we can sit around and talk about glory days and old stadiums and Regan era odds makers all we want, but it basically comes down to one thing. This is a passing league and we have a better QB and receiving corp. I love Peterson, the guy is good, but you can contain good. You can not contain great, and thats what our passing attack is becoming.

I see the game shaping up as the Lions get out to 14 point lead. The Vikings stay with the running game but find it tough going and see a lot of three and outs. The lions build on the lead using Best out of the backfield, something the Viking’s LB have trouble with. I see no production from the Viking’s offense and by the time they attempt to get it to Harvin to make some plays it will be too late. Gun will be leary of the Viking fast start this week and be ready for it. This defense is for real and pitches the shut out.

Cool man I'll be there in a Jared Allen jersey.

Not sure when I’ll be there will really be a matter of how much I drink the night before :D

I'm like the Dali Lama of kicking ass

That's Awesome, Grime

I’m looking forward to meeting you and having a few with you. Try to go light the night before so we can see the whole game together. I’ll be there to help comfort you after another tough loss. :-) Seriously, whoever wins, we ’ll have fun hanging out.

Im actually in VA Beach

Lots of military here makes it an awesome football town.

Redskins are the most popular because of proximity to D.C. but every team is represented in some fashion. The Steelers are huge here, I guess the recruiters office in Western PA has a waiting line the size of space mountain.

The best part is all the Lions fans are actually starting to wear their gear now. A few years ago I would roll up into the grocery store on game day morning and people would look at me like I had escaped from the asylum. Now I get the occasional Lions fan in a Suh jersey making a comment about finding the other Lions fan in Virginia.

renew your minds

Not the same Lions. Thank God !! 34 – 14. Could be worse. We are not letting off the peddle the rest of the way.

Cheers

Divisional game...Period.

even at our worst, we played division teams tough. Vikes will do the same. I think it will be closer than i want it to be but we pull this one out this time. New coaches, new team, new attitude.
