Mayhew was right...as always

Schwartz said awhile back that he wouldn't take a headcoaching job unless they had a QB. Or in a position to get one. Seems like Stafford was a draw to him right of the bat. While many fans begged them not to take a QB. Assumed he was doomed to fail from day one are now seeing what I and many otheres seen in Matthew Stafford. An Elite franchise QB who has all the physical tools and the intagibles that are so hard to find. Is he another Peyton Manning or Drew Brees who knows but he is certainly showing the potential to do so. With Calvin Johnson by his side they are turning the NFL on it's head one game at a time. 9 is right now a top 5 QB in the NFL stats wise and fantasy owners are basking in his greatness. Bias aside look at the other options Mayhew was being pressured to pick.

Star-divide

Top of the list was wake forest linebacker Aaron Curry. Seattle has Curry take a pay cut in August. He was solid at times but has now found himself the rumor of trade talks. Curry himself on twitter made comments about the possiblity he could be traded to Carolina or Arizona in the coming weeks. Curry was considered the Lions plan B if they couldn't agree to terms with Matt before the draft. The Gm that drafted Curry is now in Chicago and the new regime has not been impressed.

Rams picked #2 and took left tackle Jason Smith. Remember the Lions needed a tackle they always have. Rams has to switch there franchise left tackle over to the right side after poor play. The Rams tried to give him time but the debate soon started if he could even play at right tackle in the NFL. Poor Jason Smith is now a backup in St Louis after he was benched by the coaching staff.

Andre Smith while still a starting lineman for the Bengals had a lengthy hold out and ended up on IR after an ACL injury. Questions about work ethic and weight problems came about in the draft. Something that really has yet to be answered.

Mark Sanchez was picked by the jets 5th overall and well....FUCK MARK SANCHEZ

Of the top 10 picks in the NFL draft. Stafford, Raji, Tyson Jackson and Eugene Monroe have been the most productive. While Matt has delt with Injury problems there was never really to many questions about his abillity. He is now showing what many of his supporters out of college thought he could do. Perhaps spending sometime on the bench helped him in the long run. To many QBs these days are not given time to develop like they need. I hope seeing Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford all though different situations will help teams stop and think. Back in the day most QBs had 3 or 4 years before they were the starter. Not all QBs need that but I do belive many have failed because they needed it. I don't think there are to many more doubters though in the 2009 1st overall pick debate. Next up the 2010 draft debate. Berry, Suh or McCoy....Nevermind not worth my time.

Tyson Jackson is terrible.

The KC fans are calling him a bust. One sack in three years and 77 tackles. Only started five of the last fifteen games.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

Not really a bust.

They just wish they had picked someone else like Sanchez or Freeman.

Tyson Jackson and Eugene Monroe

would like you to represent them when they go for their next contract – if they’re lucky to get one.

I said they been productive

Didn’t say they were great. Monroe hasn’t been that bad. Jackson has played way below expectations but he is still a starter.

Jackson has only started five of the last fifteen games [2010 to present].

Monroe looks like he is finally getting up to NFL speed. He is a solid starter for the Jags after a slow start to his career.

Only mistake

I can think of was the Gerald Alexander for Dennis Northcut. Maybe the Wendling over Silva, but we still maintain Silva, I guess he knew we could keep both.

Didnt he have like 81 tackles as a freshman in this league? I thought he was playin good and Northcut is one in a million

He's not only correct about talent in drafts but

he gets free agents for nothing, we even stole Tulloch much to Drew Rosenhaus’s dismay.

As good as Tullochs been

Durant was a great get IMO. Got him at a good price and in a system that fits him better.

A much as I love Stafford and don't regret the pick AT ALL.

The thought of BJ Raji, Suh, and Fairley on the same team gives me a little wood.

I'm a 7 WAR player in bed.

Raji is overrated. That fat fuck wouldn’t see the field on this team.

Raji

was out of the picture for us. Taking him at 1st overall would have been too soon and he was gone by the time 20 came around. Yeah he’s been great but it’s really not at all like we passed on him.

Agreed

Taking on two lineman, not budging at all and still being able to make the tackles he does? He’s a Packer, so I kinda hate him, but I can’t help but being impressed with his play.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

Sure you can. Its easy bud. They are division rivals. /argument off

I maintain that hate and respect are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I hate Michael Jordan, but that cat can play. Raji is a Packer, so I boo that man, but I respect his skill. I hate the Bears, but…oh, no buts, I just hate the Bears.

I hope seeing Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford all though different situations will help teams stop and think. Back in the day most QBs had 3 or 4 years before they were the starter.

Unfortunately, though you are right, it won’t change anything. Coaches are on hot seats faster then ever before. Fans and franchises expect instant results and QBs are more and more important every year as the league gets more passer-happy.

by PhoenicianPakFan on Sep 28, 2011 6:40 AM EDT reply actions

If Stafford would have been drafted to a team with a Hall of Fame QB, he would have sat for at least a year too.

But to sit behind Daunte Culpepper? Really?

Every situation is different, I am sure most teams would like to bring their rookies up slowly but it is pretty hard to keep a huge talent on the bench when you have nothing ahead of him on the depth chart.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

I agree.

I’m all for rookies sitting and learning before they play. This theory however is hugely dependent on having solid veterans in front of them. At the end of the day I’m ok with rookies starting right away if they are clearly the best player at the position. Stafford was clearly needed.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

2 drafts that to be honest he shouldnt have missed on in 1st round

Mathew was by far the best option in helping rebuild in Detroit based off of Ceiling and potential. Sanchez has proven he can help manage a game but his ceiling is low just from an eye test. The next best QB from that draft that I think has any standing is Freeman and to be honest Detroit wouldnt have lost out on him either had they drafted him but so glad they got Stafford.

And I was never on the whole McCoy thing after watching a lot of film on Suh – there was no way they were letting this one go. You have a defensive minded coach that also has a semi Guru in Gunther running the Defense they know a player like Suh does not come around but once every 10 years maybe and you would rather have him on your side than playing against you.

by JaiGaiaAries on Sep 28, 2011 8:07 AM EDT reply actions

The Suh vs. McCoy thing was mostly hype

McCoy was a good prospect and hasn’t been bad at all, but Suh is an unbelievable talent. I think Eric Berry was the only other player in the top five that would have been a good option for the Lions.

Yes, I really am that great.

To your point about QB's needing to sit

I think a lot of that problem of rushing them into the starting gig too quick was a direct result of the over inflated price tag a top pick was being paid. They had to get them out there. Now that there is a cap on 1st rounders, I have a feeling we’ll see a little more patience with rookie QBs. Probably more teams willing to trade up to the #1 spot as well. Those are generally better teams that can afford to let a QB sit for a year and still be competitive.

by vanman on Sep 28, 2011 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

I have to agree

Locker and Ponder are easier to sit based on the price tag and the current QB situation for both teams.

Locker

Is in my opinion in the best position to succeed right now. He gets to sit behind a good role model and a solid QB. However, my concern is if Hasselback is a good guy to learn from, or maybe Whitehurst (clipboard Jesus) just isn’t good. We’ll see, but I have my eye on Locker now whereas before the draft I didn’t care for him one iota.

I think that Hasselback is actually a very good QB

He can play there for a year or two and then Locker can take over, not a bad situation for the Titans. Ponder on the other hand…

I like Matty H as a QB

I was more concerned with his mentoring skills. I was kinda wondering how much, if at all he impacted Clipboard Jesus’ (Whitehurst) inability to be the next QB in Seattle.

He has said more than once that part of what drew him to tennesee was getting the chance to pay if forward. From all the guys that helped.

He's always been a classy M'Fer

That’s one of the big reasons I don’t dislike him. Rookies need a guy to teach them to be a consummate pro on and off the field. Hasselback may not go into the hall of fame, but from what I’ve seen there’s not many better mentors and role models than him. We could all take a serving of Flutie Flakes.
