Anyone else stoked about what Stovall brings to our recieving core?

I feel like he is the receiver they were hoping Bryant Johnson would be.

He hasn't done much in his career

to this point so im gonna temper my expectations but he looks daaaaaaaamn good as a 4th WR and guys seem to be floourishing coming here after failing elsewhere…

its still off putting to have him wearing 80 cuz I keep thinking its Bryant Johnson.

he had Josh Freeman...

But i think sometimes with a reciever they can have a good quarterback and not play good…sometimes you don’t develop the timing with that QB…example being that Stafford may NOT even have a feel for Stovel really…not saying he isn’t good. But it has happen before…

Cris Carter all he did was catch TD in Philly..then goes to the Vikings and all of a sudden he knows how to play wideout?…. Some of it is the system and some of it is the QB… granted Randell Cunningham was his qb in Philly and Minny… but Randy had matured in the passing game by that time in his career and all of a sudden Chris Carter could get open :)

Maybe Stafford has chemistry with Stovell and they can play at a high level….would not be surprizing if he turned into a really really good reciever…not just a situational guy/special team ace

by Shankdiddy on Sep 3, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we are going to see a lot of book end sets

Megatron on one side and The Stove on the other with nate and TY in the slots. That would be a nightmare match up for just about any team if he can catch the ball.

yes

Fairley/Suh/CWILL could all be in the game at once. If suh draws a double team and nick is next to him then maybe send a blitzer on that side? we can get creative now with our front 7

Going Suh + Fairley + CWill + a blitzer

Is overkill. There’s only one QB, we don’t need two guys to tackle him, lol.

by Mavyrk on Sep 4, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

if KVB takes the LT, cwill takes the LG, suh takes C and RG and Fairley takes RT then a blitzer would be perfect. the blitzer would probably have a TE/RB but we might be able to get to em.

Yeah but

If KVB takes LT, CWill takes LG, Suh takes C and RG, and Fairley takes RT, then at least one of them (if not two) are going to make it to the QB anyways. Blitzing is unnecessary. CWill can easily dominate most single matchups against LGs, Fairley is to be declared still but I don’t imagine him being a slouch against single blocks.

The problem with that

is that it would have left Gandy as our only true backup interior offensive lineman, and Morris, much like Gandy, can play all three interior line positions.

I like Silva, and I’m hoping nobody scoops him up en route to our Practice Squad, but keeping Morris makes more sense to me.

Rebirth for Stovall?

Hopefully our system on O, along with quality QB play is gonna bring out his full potential with the Lions. If he catches the football when it’s thrown his way I think we’ll all have less grey hair then what the last 10 vet wr (besides Nate B) have given us. He looks like a Lion wr in the current system to me…fingers crossed. Our postion groupings across the board seem as solid as they’ve been in 20 years. We’ll see. I mean we don’t have Toby Caston, Lawrence Peete and Ron Rivers backing up the starters, but it’s looking damn good!

CB Depth

We went on a 4 game win streak with Vasher as a starter at the end of last year; now he is cut- I think that is a huige testament to our depth. Also, I would expect some of our cuts to be picked up around the league rather than us trying to pick up others.

by drgarnett on Sep 4, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

I think most of the guys on the final 53 are pretty obvious choices. That said, I am mainly surprised that they kept Hogue and cut Vasher, along with the cutting of Harris for Donahue and keeping 3 centers (4 if you count the long snapper). I clearly understand that they didn’t want to let Hogue get picked up on the waiver wire, and that Donahue makes 1 mill less per year than Harris (for basically the same performance in preseason and in practice…I want to see what he does when the game is on the line and we need him to pin the opposing team deep…when there is some pressure other than a rush), so I can see some of the reasons that these things happened…I just don’t agree 100% with the logic. Hopefully our corners stay healthy and avoid the injury bug, and Alphonso Smith gets to 100% real soon.

I am happy to see Derrick Williams gone, and also happy to see McDonald make the final cuts. He did a really good job this preseason in my opinion. I was not overly impressed with Aaron Berry during the preseason, and I thought that Vasher looked better, but Berry is young and has a lot of potential, so again I understand that move. Hopefully he does like Spievey and just explodes at some point in the near future. Spievey has really impressed me this year so far…:o)

What do we know about Chris Morris? Is he one of those versatile players that can play center or guard? I know that Hilliard played some guard recently, but I really hope that our guards do like I hope our corners do…stay healthy! I do not like the feeling I get when I think about the recent past, with the Peterman injuries and the injuries to Phonz and even Chris Houston last season. Houston only missed 1 game…but there isn’t a ton of depth at CB either. If both he and Wright go down, are we going to be ok with Berry, McDonald, and Smith (if he’s even healthy)??

If one of these guys can't take us to the promised land, maybe we should shop for one. You can have the greatest running back of all time, but if you don't have a consistent quarterback, you don't win.

i think

perhaps the FO is confident enough in the CB talent they can take the risk of the developmental drafted LB.

I don’t know Morris at all but love the thought they’re quite mindful of the umpaloompah and central line. Whether Morris is fill in depth, helping push the position, or whatever it’s just nice to have a hope we’ll see an actual replacement come in in the offseason to come!

9 OL on roster is normal

However a players’ position is listed, does it matter? Gandy and Hilliard could he listed as guards, so it’s not like we have 3 Centers with no versatility; Silva wasn’t cut to keep 3 Centers.

Silva should have made it over Coleman, and Pratt should have made it over Berry. With Peterman and Fox we wait for their next hangnail.

I suspect Tampa Bay will scoop up Zak Robinson.

2 guards starting

3 versatile depth in Gandy, Morris, and perhaps Hillard (although he wasn’t that impressive the few snaps I recall him there). There’s also the off the wall notion of something like Fox becoming ready at LT and Backus kicking inside, (iirc he had RG in college). There’s option for the season but long term doubt.

So we actually have four guys that can step in at guard in a pinch. That is good enough to get us by.

Whatever happened to LB Cody Brown?!

Not that it really matters. but I have record that the Lions signed him this offseason but never released him….

He was supposed to be coming but that’s down from the Lions site and it’s like he was abducted by aliens.

Awesome job Sean!

I think it was pretty hard to see Chris Morris making the team ahead of time. It is so hard to evaluate offensive line play when you don’t know the blocking assignments.

“Yes”

If we are better than the division winners last year, then we certainly have a shot at it this year.

I'm just so ready for this thing to kick off,

The team was ready to compete last year, that was obvious. I’m just more anxious now because of what happened last year.

Surprised at a few cuts.

Vasher and Silva were big surprises for me. Silva looked good all preseason. I hope he makes our practice squad. Clapp was another surprise. Does this mean we don’t have a fullback on the team? Unless they will use Heller as a fullback. Not that it is a big need but it would be nice to have for those 3rd and 1s.
Also, goodbye Derrick Williams. Not surprised by this one. Stovall outplayed him.

You missed last few days of discussion here I guess :)

Felton was cut and JS said we are De-emphasizing that position .. So Clapp was obviously gonna be cut .. Felton was released early so he could latch on to another team .. and he did. Yes, heller will be used as FB for the 3 to 4 snaps that we might need per game ..

Silva looked good but not, but not good enough to unseat people ahead of him, esp ST aces .. and Silva has a chance at the PS .. unless someone needs him so bad as to use up a roster spot on him ..

Vasher was outplayed by everyone ahead of him, and not only did Hogue do well, but there was no way we would take Hogue off the 53 Man .. Vasher isn’t an ace on ST either ..

Mostly happy

Never paid attention to Morris, so I can’t comment on him ,but I am happy the FO is paying attention to the position.

Wish Silva and Clapp would have made it, but I get the cuts.

I’m wondering if they plans to do something with that mil they saved on getting rid of Harris…

Remembering the Raiders

When Madden was coach, he always had the best of two teams on the field in preseason.
Then he would keep the best fits and cut those that lacked for various reasons……
Detroit Lions are doing the same thing, only better. We have to hope that we get lucky
with the practice squad. Go Lions……………….This will be a fun YEAR !!!!!!!!!!!

What is up with that and is not listed on the roster?

Phillips was waived/injured a few weeks ago but he passed thru waivers and was put on the Lions IR. He was listed on the Lions website under the IR all they way up until they announced the roster cuts and then he just disappeared.

When is practice squad announced?

anyway, we kept 7 linebacks and only 9 DBs(corners and safties). I really hope no one gets injured. If Silva can make it threw waviers and whatnot then we always have him to call up. Not a lot of surprises.

We don't need a fullback because...

We have Will Heller. He’s like a fullback…except he doesn’t ask to carry the football, loves blocking, and provides useful depth at other positions.

Also, who needs a fullback when you can play a much more exciting single-back offense?

by Chuseph on Sep 4, 2011 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

love Heller

still believe we need a true FB.

Any chance we look at Chester Taylor since he got released by the Bears? Also, when will the PS be announced? I’m assuming late this week?

We should have cut Mike Carrey !!

The future of lions football has and will continue to depend on how many games mike carrey refs that the lions play in. I don’t know what they ever did to that guy but he just loves to penalize us. He is the key to our success this year. I wish we could cut him.

Hilarious Prediction

from who else!? Drew Sharp

6-10: They’re getting better. It just won’t be reflected in the record. Teams knew they could coast against the Lions, knowing they would ultimately shoot themselves in the foot in the fourth. Those days are done. The Lions aren’t a good team, but they must be respected now. The biggest test wll be how they respond to the opposition giving them a maximum effort every week.

Guessed 52 of the 53!

A little surprised at keeping Chris Morris (honestly never heard of him until now) and cutting Vasher but I understand that Vasher is a hit against our cap. Thought he played well though and he should get a job elsewhere. Excited to see who’s gonna end up on our PS

Watching #49 was a blast but now it's time for some #53
