NFL Roster Cuts: Detroit Lions Release Aaron Brown

Saturday may have been when most of the roster cuts were made by NFL teams, but the maneuvering is continuing on Sunday. Teams are trying to fine tune their rosters by bringing in players released by other teams, and the Detroit Lions are no exception.

On Sunday, the agent of running back Aaron Brown announced on Twitter that the Lions have parted ways with his client.

Lions release RB Aaron Brown for waiver claim they were awarded. Aaron can be claimed by other teams.less than a minute ago via UberSocial for BlackBerry Favorite Retweet Reply

As his agent said, Brown was released because the Lions added somebody off waivers. Based on who was let go to make room on the roster for this new player, it's safe to say the waiver claim is a running back. Exactly who the player is remains a mystery for now, but I'm sure we will find out shortly.

But Harrison has done it in regular season games, too.

I didn’t like Aaron Brown as much as some. He was fast, but good more for catching out of the backfield, not rushing. I wonder if he was still missing the mental part.

Yeah

College defensive lines don’t have the likes of Haloti Ngata and Patrick Willis clogging up the holes. He may have been a “power back” in a div I-AA team, but this is the NFL.

Fits our blocking scheme, good power, not very mobile out to the second level but scrappy in close quarters. Wouldn’t be surprised if he actually stays on this team.

I would be surprised to see Raiola get traded for 2 reasons

1. I’m pretty sure he’s a team captain. He’s the signal caller on the line. He’s been with the Lions for years. As bad as he is at run blocking hes still one of the anchors of the line

2. Nobody wants to trade for an old center who can’t run block

by Kalzilla on Sep 4, 2011 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally Agree

I get that he sucks at the blocking but he nows the system and cutting him would just hurt our already terrible run game

Reading up on Mcclendon, 6'3 324 lbs

Key words. Strong, Power, Good Run Blocking. He may be able to play Center. Knowing that, and also knowing the Colts drafted him, I’d say watch for this guy to have an impact maybe next season. He’s still young and physicality being his strength it’s no wonder he didn’t fit in with Indy’s philosophy. The Colts may have just been Mayhewed.

He's not God's Gift to Interior Lineman

He’s weak in the pass game, and while he’s strong in the short yardage run game he’s pretty suspect in sealing off at the second level. He’s a project, but he fits the scheme and most importantly it’s an eventual run-blocking upgrade. Keyword eventual.

How do a couple turf toes and a couple concussions make you soft?

I don’t know why so many people are willing to write Jahvid off this early in his career.

by Mavyrk on Sep 4, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

agree except the concussion part

Im on the Best boat dont get me wrong I think he has the potential to be a good RB. The one thing that is a concern has to be the concussions. However I really think that Schwartz sold Linehan on Best by saying if he was half as productive as Chris Johnson he’ll be a factor that can win games which we saw flashes of early on before the turf toes. Taking a great risk reward approach. Then they realized he’s not as good as they wanted for an in between the tackles and went for a young runner like Leshoure and w/ a young nucleus they could carry the ball for years to come splitting reps. Kinda had an idea that end of season RB stats if Best / Leshoure would have been featured as hoped would of went something like 6-800 yds and the other 1000-1200 yds rushing wise.

However as i stated above I really believe this is a nod for Best as well that he’ll be healthy and productive enough to carry the main load for the season. With MoMo and Harrison they’re not bad but they’re not a great RB team at same time they just need enough production to keep the defenses honest.
