Wow! Jags Cut David Garrard Five Days Before Opener!

David Garrard was slated to be the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars this season, but just five days before they play their first regular season game, the Jags have cut him.  I can't even begin to explain how stupid this move is.  Even if you decide that you don't want the guy to start, you keep him on your roster as a backup for Luke McCown.

There is some speculation that this move was made in order to position the Jags for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.  It is clear that the ownership had to get involved for this to happen.  While Jack Del Rio has not always impressed me as a coach, he is just not that dumb.  Unless there is a compelling reason that we don't know about,  this is just a really bush league move by the Jags.

I am sure glad that the Lions aren't doing stupid stuff like this any more.  It is very refreshing to know that the Lions no longer have the worst ownership/management in the NFL.

Who picks him up?

He’s surely not going to be on the market for long…

by Dubie on Sep 6, 2011 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

That's a great question.

Whoever gets him will get a decent QB for nothing. He is not going to win the Super Bowl for you, but he is better than some of the guys starting for other teams. You would think that teams like Seattle and San Francisco might have an interest, but they might want to be in the Andrew Luck sweeps too.

I never met him, but he was family to me... R.I.P. Tom Kowalski We will all miss you.

Serious question

Don’t flame me, I don’t pay enough attn to pro football to know better.

Would he be a better option at backup than Shaun Hill?

Yeah agree with latif

He might be better if we had him at the start of training camp. and he probably wants too much money

that's a great question

I have to say no as well. Sure there’s the Hill knows the system angle but Stanton could possibly bridge that. The biggest issue imo is the finances. I doubt Gerrard would be willing to play for the 1.5m or whatever we have in cap space.

couple of teams come to mind

Miami – they definitely need a back up to Henne, and since Garrard is already in Florida it could be reasonable he would take the cut and go to Miami to play w/ Edwards and Bush.

Seattle- After a lackluster preseason I could see them going for him as they realize they messed up w/ Jackson.

Giants – david Carr ??

Buffalo- Ty Thigpen nuff said

Baltimore- they have no one of significance if Flacco goes down

Chiefs – do they feel comfy enough w/ Palka if they feel they can win the AFC west and Cassel goes out

49ers – need a true starter Cardinals yea we wont forget how terrible they were last year -
Rams- If this is their year to win the NFC west and Bradfords all they got ……

Panthers- Garrard could be a solid vet to help Newton and would be a better #2 than Clausen

This was stupid

Garrard played the best. Gabbert did nothing special to warrant this move. The only other option McCown. I wonder if Mayhew can make a trade and sa ve MJD from this horrid crisis in Jaxsonville.

Hard to believe they are starting McCown over Gabbert. I have to believe this move was likely prompted by bad blood between Gerrard and Gabbert. Just a guess on my part, but I’m putting my money on Gerrard being a class A A-hole towards Gabbert, or as my buddy Chuck would say, “maybe he punched a baby in front of the owner”.

This is a head-scratcher regardless

Thank you.

The Jags have not been happy with Garrard for a few years.

The fan base has been very split over him. Go on their SB site and read some of the comments. Most are more upset at the timing than actually cutting him.

They are in rebuilding mode.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 6, 2011 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

I read something about them being 33 mil under cap now, they saved 8.1 by whacking him.

WTF, could you imagine how hard we’d be raging if the Lions did that to Stafford 5 days before the season?….lol

There is very little in common between Staff and Garrard.

Garrard appears to be getting worse, and they really have no confidence that he could do the job anymore. Sounds like his teammates were almost relieved that they made this move now.

Better late than later.

part of me isnt surprised by that.

Jaguars pulled this same move a few years ago when they released Leftwich in 2007 right before the season in favor of Garrard. I do not think the jaguars will be part of the andrew luck sweepstakes. I think it will be more along the lines of “Gabbert! Gabbert! He’s our man! If he can’t do it then…well…Del Rio is fired.”

Don't let my profile name fool you. My heart is, and always has been, with the Detroit Lions.

I really don't think Andrew Luck is all that good

I saw him play during week 1 of the college season, and he was all over the place. Sure, he was 17 for 26, 171 yards, and 2 TDs, and his stats looked good by the end of the game, but he was only playing against San Diego State. His incomplete passes were terrible, and of the passes he did complete, some of them were also off target. What if he had been throwing against the Packers or the Jets?? Granted, it was his first game of the season, but he probably would have been the #1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft had he declared eligible (meaning he was very solid in the past). I think it was a mistake on his part to play another year at Stanford, and I do not see him repeating last year’s performance. My point is that I don’t mind Jacksonville doing stupid stuff like this, especially if they did it for a better chance to land Andrew Luck in 2012. Luck is good, but he is no Sam Bradford or Matt Stafford in my opinion.

If one of these guys can't take us to the promised land, maybe we should shop for one. You can have the greatest running back of all time, but if you don't have a consistent quarterback, you don't win.

San Diego State would have been a lot more impressive, they were a pretty good team last season.

I believe its a move to get rid of Del Rio

Too bad, Del Rio coaches hard hitting football which appears to be frowned upon these days.

by Honalulublue on Sep 7, 2011 12:25 AM EDT reply actions

Del Rio was the one behind this move.

The Jag fans think this is Jack’s attempt to save his job for another year. They are talking about making the playoffs down there. Must be something in the water.

Highly surprising

He’ll find a job elsewhere though. It makes me question the Jags chances this year though.

by Hyperion Ecta on Sep 7, 2011 1:37 AM EDT reply actions

I don't find this surprising at all.

I was in Florida when they had the draft. Guns were blazing when they drafted Gabbert. Seriously!! Garrard hasn’t accomplished anything. With arguably the best running back in the league and a middle of the pack defense, he still couldn’t put them over the hump to win. I think them releasing Garrard will sell more tickets. Jags fans wanna see Gabbert play.

Word is that the final straw was when he threw three picks in practice, they cut him after that practice

Gerrard himself said “It’s my own fault”

Sounds to me like he was not playing up to par. NFL Network pointed out many plays last year and this where he overthrew open receivers.
