Overrated/Underrated?
I am writing a guide for the upcoming season and I had a few questions about the Detroit Lions. I thought he best place to find these answers was from the fan base. At least this way I'll get truthful answers. Thanks in advance

Rookie of the year for the Lions?
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?

My quick, sort of uneducated take on this
Overrated: Delmas
Underrated: Stafford, Wright
ROY: Titus
Needs: Offensive line, Running back to pair with Leshoure, cornerback depth
Fairley: Tough to say right now, he’s looked brilliant when he’s out there, but he hasn’t been out there much. We’ll know for sure this time next year.
Running Game: This stems a bit from Raiola. When he’s overmatched by those big DTs they can get into the backfield and tackle the runner before he can find a hole.
Suh: Suh is a tough player who needs to get a better handle on his emotions.
You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.
-Johnny Cash
overrated – NONE because Lions players do not get any exposure.
underrated – Matthew Stafford. How does a QB throw for 5000 yards and 41 TDs and be a Pro Bowl alternate behind a rookie QB?
Rookie of the year – Titus Young. Everyone else was injured
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft? How to tackle player that play for the Saints.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick? a big YES. Even through he was injured, he showed flashes of a beast.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things. Certain RBs had some success running behind the interior. I do think it is a bit of both o-line and the quality of the RBs
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player? Neither, Suh is simply a bad-ass
Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith 1945 - 2011 R.I.P.
overrated: Suh
underrated: Both Youngs
ROY: Titus Young
2012 Draft: Inner o-line/defensive backs
Was the Fairley pick worth it: Yes, we’ll see this more next year, though
Running Game Woes: Injuries/Interior o-line
Suh: immature/Emotional
Tengo el sangre del tigre.
my vote also
except the last line.
Suh: Dirty, short sighted and selfish

overrated: Suh – a DT has to have accountability for the inside rush (scheme?)
underrated: Chris Houston – the last 2 games never happened (Stafford/CJ before season)
ROY: Titus Young – and he’s underrated, too
2012 Draft: defensive back or offensive lineman (any position)
Fairly: He could be worth it, this year he had: 1) a lasting injury 2) no real off season
running game: the line can’t open a hole. At all.
Suh: tough player, he’s not an evil villain or anything
On Suh, I just felt like he wasn’t driven to success this year. Maybe his numbers make me think that, and those could be related to more offensive scheming against him (didn’t teams plan against him his rookie year, too?) But I was a bit disappointed.
We have our man. It's Stafford. It's Suh. It's Calvin. It's Delmas. What we need is Man Number Two to stand up.

My take.
Overrated: Suh or KVB.
Underrated: Stafford
ROY: Titus
2012 Draft: Continue to stockpile talent at all positions except TE, RB, or QB.
Fairley: He played well when he got on the field. I think he will be our best D Lineman in two years.
Run Game: Running inside is not something the Lions are built for. Especially after Leshoure was injured.
Suh: Loads of talent. Needs to get refocused on playing both the run and pass.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
Let's see
Who is the Lions most overrated player?
KVB
Most underrated player?
Tulloch Not really getting the national attention he deserves at all
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
Titus Young
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
O-line and maybe DE
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
Yes, he’ll develop quite nicely
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things.
Partially on the line, partially on the backs inability to stay healthy
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
Mostly tough, sometimes over the top
President of the Eric Wright fan club, but I love me some Aaron Berry.
Obligatory statement about being a huge Lions fan.
I have a twitter: Follow Me
Well I think
Overrated-Im not so sure anybody on this roster is overrated, though for a 2nd round pick Louis Delmas hasn’t had the production to match his draft status.
Underrated-Definitely Matt Stafford. Everybody knows he was snubbed, but next year if he stays healthy he’ll get his.
2012 Draft -2 CB’s, OT, C, S, LB, and just to be safe RB.
Would still pick best player available, but cornerback is the most pressing need outside of left tackle.
Nick Fairley-He was a rookie that never had an offseason and was injured early in the season. I don’t think he had enough time to develop, but next season I’m expecting big things.
Suh-He is over emotional at times and gets easily frustrated. He is our best defensive player and anchors the d-line and will dominate once Failry is fully healthy and has a proper offseason.

Forgot Rookie of the Year-Titus Young. He's a bonafide threat and makes the toughest catches. I look for him to be the #2 receiver next season

+1 on Delmas
Want to also throw Levys name in. Way too many plays seeing him run past the ball carrier or bounce off like a JV second stringer.

Young
seems really immature at times and when he f’s up he looks like a whinning little biatch on the sideline. He seemed inconsistent to me, too many stupid mistakes that (frankly) professional athletes at this level should not be making, no excuses. He got hands though, but I’m more worried about his maturity more than anything.
Desean Jackson anyone?
The one good thing about "immaturity" is there is a cure ... getting older and more experienced
At least if the guy is coachable and will listen to advice. He’s 22 years old. And I personally like what I hear about him. I think he felt really bad about how he hurt the team during the first Saint’s game. Rookies mess up sometimes.
I personally think he’s got great upside, has good hands, seems to run good routes (with the occasional mistake). Remember there was no normal preseason introduction for this batch of rookies, they got thrown into the mix pretty quickly.
Perhaps most importantly, I think Stafford trusts him to catch the ball.
Lion fan in the Great Land!
How many penalties after the saints game for TY? I don’t believe any, he will be our #2 next year for good reason. 6Td’s and like 6-700 yards for a rookie WR who was injured at the beginning of his first season as a pro with very little offseason. I’m more than excited to see how much better he gets next year. Btw comparing him to desean jackson isnt in the least bit fair.
Who is the Lions most overrated player? Nate B/KVB I like them both but…to many mistakes from the vocal leaders makes all the other reasons; age, cap#, production, unbearable.
Most underrated player? If the franchise wasn’t paying first round dollars to Pettigrew…Tony Sheff’s numbers could be as good as any TE in the league 1000yd/10 TD. I like BP but it’s a shame to see Tony rotting away, guy should get more touches.
Rookie of the year for the Lions?Titus Young showed flashes early and got better all year til by December he had Staff n company going his way instead of Nate B. Loved that!!! If he stays healthy he goes over 1000 next year. Best little WR we’ve had since Brett Perriman(I skipped Johnnie Morton for a reason)Titus is already more dangerous;)
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?Well since I didn’t want 3 guys in the first question. Levy is about as soft a linebacker as they come. Thank God they moved him from the middle and I hope he moves to the bench next ASAP. He and Peterman are prime examples of players better suited for backup rolls as we get better, as Schwartz has eluded to (not them specific)many times when talking roster make up. So Oline and playmakers on D seem like the obvious. We just saw what strong guards do (NO),and we haven’t had a pair of those since Utley n Andolsek. Time for some studs up the pipe and… did the back end of the D cause one coverage sack all year?! I can’t recall one.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick? He and Sammie Hill were the better tackles last week I thought. He could end up being our best d lineman. He seems to play with his hands better than Suh, can’t wait til they start side by side with SLH spelling them. Get a draft pick for C Will next month PLZ!!!!!!!
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things. Until we have a middle three with upside instead of average guys squeezing the absolute most from their bodies we will not sustain drives between the tackles. Great interior Oline play puts pressure on defenses all over the place because their assigments can be so varied on every play.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player? Defensive players are doing every thing they can to focus beyond the blockers and get to the ball carrier. So blockers take cheap, late, low, etc, shots all the time. So the play ends and your focus goes from the football to this chump taking liberties on you because all you cared about was making the tackle not what his cheap ass was doing..and you snap. You’re already trying to literally destroy the person with the ball and now donut boy is JOPing. Shit gets talked, helmets get grabbed, punches(that you never see)get thrown all game long, and yes GOD forbid thee occasional olineman gets stomped on. One, they deserved it. Two, I never met a QB that didn’t deserve to get body slammed, and everything else uttered otherwise on the subject is PC bull crap that doesn’t have anything to do with what really goes on. Don’t get caught or flagged or Mark “the dirtiest player ever” Schlereth will be boo hooing all over TV so ratings stay up. He doesn’t even think it!!!! Holy crap somebody talk reality ONE TIME! Oh wait, I just did, well you did ask for opinions. I’m leaning toward tough. War is the dirtiest game, even when it’s just a game. That’s why we gggggrowl n love it! Go Lions, next year the cheese melts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grew is a way way better blocker than Sheff...
he is one of the reasons we have been so good in the Pass Protection
Well here is my 2 cents, for your reading pleasure, I hope ;)
Who is the Lions most overrated player?
Dominic Raiola
Most underrated player?
Lawrence Jackson
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
Titus Young
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
Possibly defensive end if they lose Cliff Avril. Offensive Line, mainly center and right guard. Depth at corner and safety in the later rounds. Depth at receiver in the mid rounds. Possibly a left tackle in round one if they don’t have confidence in Jason Fox’s availability and they move on from Backus due to injury, age, or salary reasons.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
Yes, absolutely. He shows immense potential and could be as good or even better than Ndamukong Suh. He is a truly gifted, unique, and disruptive player. Much better against the run than Suh has been, but then he don’t see as many double teams either. Anyhow, Cory Williams and Sammy Lee Hill are good players, but Sammy lacks the raw talent that Nick and Ndom have and Cory is not exactly young. It was a great move to ensure that the Lions have a talented, and possibly dominant interior line for years and years to come.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things. One name, Dominic Railoa. The kind of blocking 2-3 yards deep in the backfield, right in the QB and RB’s lap. He is just not big nor physically gifted enough to win the battles we need to have an interior run game.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
All lions players are tough, it is part of the criteria for the front office in acquiring players. Even guys like Jahvid Best and Stefan Logan are pretty darn tough. And those are the mighty mights. Of course Suh is tough, and he is coached in a very aggressive manner, to walk right on the edge of that line between fierce and bat crap crazy. The best word to describe both Suh and Fairley is nasty. They are not 100% clean players, but they do not intentionally play dirty. They just get so hungry to go eat some QB that they sometimes drool on their bibs, they are babies in terms of NFL tenure after all.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Nice with the LoJack selection
I watch him and KVB play and honestly I don’t understand why he doesn’t start. Guy had like 4.5 sacks this year and it’s hard to remember him taking the field. Now that’s production.

LoJack had some injury concerns this year
I like him as a player, he was a good pick-up last season. I’d feel comfortable with him as a starter.
I couldn't think of a better signature.
OK, here are my answers...
Who is the Lions most overrated player?
I cannot say that any Lions players are overrated. You have a team with an excellent offense and improving defense and they are treated like an ugly stepsister. The only Lions that gets very much love is Calvin Johnson and even he was told he isn’t even a top five receiver in the NFL by both Cris Carter and Heath Evans when the season started. Sure, the NFL fans and media have finally figured out that Megatron is pretty good, but they have not really caught on to anybody else on the team yet. Calvin Johnson was the only Lions to make the Pro Bowl and All Pro squads. That is all you need to know to see how the Lions get about zero respect.
Most underrated player?
Matthew Stafford. He is one of only four quarterbacks to throw for 5000 yards in a season in the history of the NFL. He finished #3 in passing yardage, #5 in completion percentage, #3 in touchdown passes, and #5 in passer rating in the ENTIRE NFL, but he is not good enough to deserve playing in the Pro Bowl. What is more, Stafford did that despite several poor to mediocre games during the season because he fractured the fingertip of his index finger on his throwing hand, which makes it very difficult to throw a football.
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
It is probably Titus Young. He developed well during the season and he has a very bright future if he continues to develop. I would also give some serious consideration to Aaron Berry who played a lot of snaps as one of our outside cornerbacks and did a pretty solid job for a rookie. I know some people will say that Berry was here last season, but he went on IR after one game, so he is still a rookie this season by NFL rules.
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
The Lions currently need depth in the secondary and an upgrade to the offensive line more than anything else. We could also use one more impact receiver. If Cliff Avril leaves in free agency then we need another defensive end.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
I thought Fairley was picked very late for the talent level he has. There are going to be some teams that will wish they took him after the smoke clears from a couple more NFL seasons. Fairley was hurt and played sparingly because of that. When Fairley could play without pain in his foot, he was an impact player. He has a chance to be better than Suh. SO yes, I feel he will be worth it.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things.
The Lions were able to run between the tackles at times. The problem is more about the interior of our offensive line than anything else. One thing you will discover about the Lions running game is that it gets better as the season progresses. In 2010 the Lions ran well for the final four games. in 2011 the Lions ran pretty well in the last half of the season. This implies that the problem with line blocking is partly due to coordination on the offensive line. I am hoping that the offensive line gels even earlier next season.
The rushing numbers also get skewed a bit because the Lions run the ball way less than most other teams in the NFL. The Lions are a passing offense, first and foremost. While the Lions finished 29th in the NFL in total rushing yardage, they were actually tied for 12th in the NFL in average yards per rushing play. So when the Lions did run the ball, they were better than most other NFL teams, they just don’t run that much. That will probably change a little next season when our running backs come back healthy.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
A little of both. I think that Suh is young and he lets the emotions of the moment get the better of him at times. When he does, he can cross the line at times. I also feel that he is learning to get control of his issues and that he will be fine when it is all done.

Most underrated player?
By fans on this blog? Cliff Avril. By the masses? Matthew Stafford.
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
Titus Young.
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
RG, LT, OC, CB, OLB, RDE, SS — in some order.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
Absolutely.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things.
It’s a bit of both, really. We do have our issues, but our rushing on a per-play basis isn’t as awful as it seems; when you’ve got a QB passing for 5k+ yards, you tend to make sacrifices in other areas. Still, there’s room to improve.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
A tough player, and a little dumb.

I'll play
Overrated – KVB, leadership by example means staying at home on reverses and for God sakes take out the red contacts, you are a grown man.
Underrated – Tulloch
Rookie of the year for the Lions – Young
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft – Top flight corner. This is a passing league and our DBs don’t hold up well against elite talent. Stop patching the secondary together with retreads and draft quality over quantity.
Drafting Fairley – He will be a beast next year.
Run game – Who cares? It’s a passing league not the Big Ten. The running game only sets up the play action pass to move the safeties. Teams that run lose, teams that pass win, sorry 70’s NFL guy it is what it is.
Suh – Dirty, nasty, downright filthy….where did I put my number 90 Jersey?
Let's try this.
Overrated: The whole defense, too many mistakes.
Underrated: Stafford of course.
ROY: Titus Young
Draft: BPA, too many holes to fill, we have lots of average players so anybody that can be an improvement on O-line, LB (take Levy out of there please), and a good smart safety that can cover and play the run. Our CB’s can be good enough with safety help.
Fairley? I think he’s shown flashes of what he can do, that should make Suh jealous :)!
Run game: I’m old school and love clock management and good defense. You think NO is putting up 40 on the 49ers? I don’t think so, we’ll see!
Suh: Self centered, egotistical, liar, not approachable (from his teammates), not a team guy, he didn’t join the team during the lock out, he was busy racing in Europe. He’s all about his image and the team is his vehicle to show off. He is a big question mark in my opinion. I’d be very tempted to trade him, I just don’t know if he can be a part of the team or if the team is his excuse to try and strut his stuff. He’s been stuffed this year by opponents, sophomore jinx? I dunno about him anymore!
_
Overrated – Delmas
Underrated – Spievey
RoY – Titus
Draft – Center
Fairley – Worth the pick.
Run Game – Its on Raiola, an undersized center.
Suh – Not dirty, but selfish.

Well....
Overrated – KVB/Wright
Underrated –Stafford
RoY – Titus (no brainer)
Draft – Center or OT
Fairley – hes gonna be a stud if he cant put the fooot injury behind him.
Run Game – Its on Raiola, an undersized center.
Suh – Needs mature more and be more mentally strong…also, i wonder if surgery on his shoulder effected him some. Good thing is we know what he can do. Its only his second year folks. not to mention the fact that 4 sacks isn’t even bad production from a DT but we have really high expectations (as we should). Next year i think he will come back with a vengenace. 50+ Tackles, 8+ sacks, a few FF, maybe a pick too.
Randomly
Who is the Lions most overrated player?
Kyle Vanden Bosch. I love the guy, got his jersey, but he’s not what he used to be, and that was a decent end with a crazy motor. He’s awesome in the locker room, and I’d love to see him coach our own DE’s, but he just isn’t an impact player anymore.
Most underrated player?
Rob Sims. The door at LG was revolving with some names we’d rather just forget, and Rob Sims not only held down the position in his time here, but has really incited a change in the ‘culture’ of our offensive line.
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
Titus Young. LeShoure has been out from day one, and Fairley probably would have had a huge impact if his foot hadn’t bothered him all year. Young really stepped up at the end of the season while limiting bonehead plays that plagued him early on. I knocked him all along, but this kid could be the real deal.
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
For sure. Fairley showed flash a la Ndamukong Suh’s rookie year – he plays balanced and he’s just plain strong. I wanted Amakumara badly, but Fairley was the pick, and once again, Martin Mayhew is exonerated.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things.
Well, yeah. The run game is nonexistant due to an offensive line from 10 years ago. Guys these days have to be absolutely massive and athletic, and our guys are neither of those. Pass protecting is a different story, you can use gameplanning to make it more efficient, but run blocking requires you to physically dominate your opponent, and our guys simply cannot do that.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
Both? There’s no doubt he’s a tough player, the guy is a monster. But dirty is a subjective word with negative connotations, so you’ll rarely find a fan to agree to that. Suh is a freak of nature among freaks of nature, and that includes the temper that goes with it. He either has to commit to the way he plays, or he’s not going to reach his potential. He commits dumbass fouls, but there is no malice in his play. Ndamukong Suh is on the field to play football better than everyone else, and that’s all he cares about.
Hell, if I were him, I’d want my opponents to not be hurt so I could know I beat them at their best. I doubt he thinks much differently.

"In the absence of logic it is not uncommon that sanity can only be found by embracing lunacy." – Leonuro, circa 2011
My take
Overrated: Can I put Gunther Cunningham here? If not, I’m going with KVB.
Underrated: Stafford. I keep reading this “year of the quarterback” crap that fails to mention the year Stafford had. I’d put Pettigrew as my other underrated pick.
ROTY: Titus Young. The guy got better and better as the year went on, I think he’ll be a solid number two for a long time.
Draft needs: OL, DB, RB. We need to think about the eventual replacements for Backus and Raiola, our pass defense needs work, and we can’t seem to find a productive runningback that can stay healthy.
Nick Fairley was the best player on the board at the time. He’s battled injury this season, but had flashes of greatness. If he’s healthy in 2012, he could be very good.
Interior run game comes down to blocking and a runningback that can break an arm tackle. It seems like every back on our roster gets brought down by somebody blowing too hard on them. We need a more physical power back. Leshoure was supposed to be this player, but his knee injury in camp took him out for the year.
The only thing Suh did that I’d call dirty was the stomp. Otherwise, his full speed all the time mentality is more tough than dirty.
I couldn't think of a better signature.
i'm new to the lions fan base... but more of an outsiders point of view...
Who is the Lions most overrated player?
Suh. He is a great player, but some say he is the best at his position. I’m not that quick to put him in that category just yet.
Most underrated player?
Stafford. Just look up his stats this year. The fact that he was able to do what he did and still miss the pro bowl just baffles me.
Rookie of the year for the Lions?
Titus Young. He had a great year for a rookie and shows plenty of potential for improvement.
What do the Lions need to address in the 2012 draft?
Secondary and O line mostly. With the right re-signs, this team really just needs to get better with what they got and add depth for more competition. I don’t think this team has any one position that is just terrible. But could definitely use some improving.
Was drafting Nick Fairley in the first round worth the high pick?
I think he was worth the high pick. He has a lot of potential and will help the rest of the defense improve their play too.
From my observations, the Lions struggle to establish an interior run game. Why do you think this is, or am I just imagining things.
I think they could have been better at blocking, but also you can’t forget that Best and Leshoure were both hurt. Getting those two back next year will help our run game immensely.
Do you think Suh is a tough player or a dirty player?
He is definitely a tough player who still has some growing up to do. He is still young too and has plenty of time to grow more patience. I think he does have a bit of a temper and gets frustrated a little too easy, but that can be improved with time.
over-rated Delmas
under-rated Rashied Davis he did it all for the team when called upon
ROY Titus
draft center
Fairly will have a strong tenure with the Lions
we would run tough inside:
If Raiola wouldn’t get pushed 3yds back the pulling gaurd wouldn’t be slowed down on his way to block the LB,
in the words of Mayhew Suh is a nasty player
We came! We saw! We lost to the Saints
The 2012 Lions will conquer
