I really hate saying this

I have this really bad feeling that we wont have as good of a season next year. Maybe its because I am so used to the losing culture that was created by our past management situation. But something tells me next year will see a slight drop in production and wins. I truly hope we only continue to get better next year and that all I need is to be medicated for my paranoia. This year was so unfathomably great that my instinct is to worry for failure next year. I really hope that Mayhew is able to re-sign all the important FA's and find all the right players to fit the holes we had this year through free agency and the draft. Thankfully our players, especially the offense, wont have to worry about different coordinators next year thanks to them being re-signed. Well I guess to end this rant from an asylum bound man, my thinking for next year is an 8-8 season. I so hope I'm wrong and that all I need is some good shock therapy and some really strong anti-psychotics.

well let me put it this way

If I was to guess a record using my heart, it would be 13-3. The problem is the turmoil that the Lions have caused to my brain for the last 43 years. So that is where the 8-8 record comes from.

If it aint broke, tear it apart and see why it was working so well. Tebow sucks demon drool

We are not last years bucs.

They didn’t beat any winning teams but it was how they beat the teams that they did beat that is the difference. They squeaked out late fourth quarter wins against a lot of bad teams last year. We blew them out. We also beat a lot of 8-8 teams who if any of them had beaten us would have been over .500.

Plus we play the NFC West and AFC South next year. I think we can handle most of the teams in the west and Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, Andrew Luck? (Who would be a rookie on a bad team) and maybe Houston depending on how this off season goes.

We are taught from an early age how to deal with failure not success. (If at first you don't succeed try try again, if at first you succeed then what....) -Charlie Sheen

Dominating your opposition physically is great and all, but confounding them mentally is sooo much more fun.

My thoughts exactly

People need to get over the past and enjoy right now. This team’s legit and it’s gonna contend for a while.

Yeah but

This is the 1st time in ten years I looked at next years schedule and said WOW,

13-3 might be pushing it, I said 11-5. But I would not be shocked to see 12-4

by msivits on Jan 14, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I picked 11-5

And most of those were “should wins” rather than “reaches”.

really the difference is quarterback

the Lions have not had a quarterback in 55 years… Lions have been terrible for 90 % of that time. Get a quarterback and all of the “old Lions” go away. It is really that simple in the NFL. If you have a quarterback you have a chance. If you don’t have a quarterback then you better have a really freaking good defence

I think the Lions win 11 games next year with the potiental for a 13-3 season if the defense steps up and break out year by the running back position.

by Shankdiddy on Jan 14, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

We had a drop in production this year.

Our defense was worse in a number of ways. The team was better almost entirely because Stafford got the offense clicking.

If the Lions get the defense going again, that’s an extra win or two right there.

I understand this concern as a lifelong Lions fan

However, I don’t see where the decline will happen. I think this team would have gone farther if we’d have a legitimate running game. We played our best football of the year when Jahvid Best and then later Kevin Smith were healthy and productive. I also think we’ll see improvement on the defensive side, because frankly, they can’t be much worse than they were the last 2 games.

Just having a running game could equal another win or two

A healthy Leshoure and Best could make a big difference.

I couldn't think of a better signature.

have you seen our schedule?

c’mon man! get some faith in what this team is doing. save your negative comments for some other blogsite. no way in hell THIS team goes backward next year!

by dfwLions on Jan 14, 2012 11:23 AM EST reply actions

A drop in

production should equal MORE wins, because it means we are running the ball effectively, using up the clock, keeping the other guys off the field and resting our defense for the 4th quarter.

by rproulx on Jan 14, 2012 11:36 AM EST reply actions

Our QB completes his first full season and throws north of 5G/40 TDs and you think we are going to go backwards?....

Have you even looked at next years schedule? Its not bad as our schedules go.

If we stay healthy we can play with anybody in the league.

i have to agree with everyone here

our schedule should be significantly easier and we will get our features backs back. lions got nowhere to go but up.

I posted a blog about this very subject before this season.

http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2011/7/31/2308073/the-lions-have-successfully-changed-to-a-winning-attitude

I still feel the same. This team is different. I do not feel they will fall flat as past Lions teams have done. I really can see this team making a run for all the marbles every season for the next ten years, at least.

I guess I'm the only person who agrees, to an extent

I usually bet pretty conservatively, and I say 9-7 at minimum next year is fine. I hope and expect to see double digit wins, but something of a sophomore slump is not uncommon. You can’t necessarily to expect improvement every single year, and I can see this year being a reloading (not rebuilding) season.

You are not alone here man

The entire NFL system is built to keep teams closer to the median. Outliers like the Pats, Steelers, Pack ect are the exception to the rule, not the rule.

You can’t necessarily to expect improvement every single year

exactly.

I could see reasons why we decline as far as wins and losses go, BUT

Considering our non division schedule we got it easy! The AFC South and NFC West! The Falcons and Eagles!

That screams 12-4! We will be just fine. Hell, we may even contend for the division.

i'll take lower numbers overall

If we get more playoff wins

They went from 0 wins to 2 to 6 to 10. Get to the NFC Championship game.

They could have been 12 - 4 this year

If you take out the stupid penalties and Staffs time moving up the learning curve, they easily could have been 12-5. If you give us healthy running backs, a healthy Fairley and a healthy secondary plus a Staff that’s all learned up, You get to 12-4. This is two more wins than last year. If we move up like last year we’ll be 14-2, which would be nice but 12-4 works for me.

by rekar on Jan 15, 2012 10:59 PM EST reply actions

and we could have had a lot worse of a record

I like your half full thinking but we definitely could have lost a few games we won this year. The biggest thing that helped us, besides having Stafford and CJ, along with some other weapons was the turnovers. We took advantage of turnovers this year. Who knows how that is going to go next year, if we will get opportunities to take the ball away on defense.

We could have lost the Vikings game, J. Webb was destroying us, We could have lost to the Raiders/Cowboys/Panthers etc. etc etc. That being said, we did win those games so I know its a non point but we could have lost those games, just like we could have won games we lost.

I thought we beat the teams we were supposed to beat

besides the second chicago game… but then Soldier Field and a broken finger , high winds, no run game .. is a hard game

An unfounded theory, to say the least

But bookmark this page, just in case. I’m sure you’d enjoy the “I told you so” moment.

We have our man. It's Stafford. It's Suh. It's Calvin. It's Delmas. What we need is Man Number Two to stand up.

I predicted 12 and 4 in 2011, so I will throw that out there right now.

I reserve the right to modify that based on what happens during the offseason.

I really like our chances to improve this record based on some of our players who have improved their performances this last year with plenty of room to grow; ie. Avril, Willie Young, Aaron Berry, Stafford, Titus, Pettigrew, and Calvin.

Especially the dynamic duo. I think the last four games of the season really made Calvin and Stafford realize what they can accomplish together. Both of them really stepped up their play over that time and I see no reason why they cannot carry it over to 2012.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

E-E-E-EXXXCCCUUUUUSSSSSEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE???????!!!!!!!!!

And I predict the next president will be……wait for it…..wait for it…….Mayhew! With JS as VP!! Man, I echo a thousand times over; “You’ve GOT to be kidding”!!!!!
If ANYONE has ANY reason to judge this team over ANYone from the last X nr. of years; it is someone who has followed FANATICALLY for the last 45!!!! There is NO comparison to ANY of the teams in that era INCLUDING when we had Barry(I love Barry and he is IMO THE greatest RB of all time!) or when we had Fontes or Clark or WHOEVER as coach! If you can’t see that and look at the future with not only hope but CONFIDENCE, then I suggest you find a team of TRANSFORMERS, or whatever; someone who CANNOT be defeated! There is NO SUCH TEAM that exists or will ever; duh! All we can do is APPRECIATE the changes, the newfound “Swagger”, the newfound mental attitude; the COMEBACK , never say die approach to the game and as one poster said; realize we CAN PLAY WITH ANY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!! In all my years as a Lions fan, I have NEVER been more pumped and looking forward to the draft and then to next season!! Staff; Comeback POY!!!!

Leo's have proven they can play with anyone

Mayhew and Co can only patch n fill so many holes a year via the draft, trades and FA. Whoever they go with in this year’s draft should only make them even a tougher team to beat. The nice thing about their 10 win season this year is that now, Detroit is an even more attractive destination for the better free agent players. With the way they showed up every game, won on the road, overcame bad officiating and came from behind to win more than once showed alot of character as a team. And belive me other players from around the league took notice. Losing and mediocre teams don’t do those things. That, added with playoff experience… .I only see this team being even more formidable next year.

by Maxha on Jan 16, 2012 10:39 PM EST reply actions

I'm only predicting 10 wins because

The world is going to end on 12/21/2012. The Lions will have 10 wins at that point and look like a championship contender. We all know as Lions fans that this is inevitable.

I couldn't think of a better signature.

I'm not going to comment yet about next season...

until I see what we do during the draft and off season. I am, however, optimisic. :)
