Salary Cap info for you guys
Okay here is my first of my many monthly updates on the salary cap for 2012.
I am going to first off and say that the 2012 salary cap number is going to be in the ball park of 123 million dollars. Now that is a roughly 3 million dollar increase. I should point out that like last EVERY team is playing with different cap numbers. Some teams might be 123.5 others could be 124. There is some accounting numbers because of multiple reasons that have some teams higher and some teams lower. In any case here is the breakdown right now.
As has been mentioned earlier we have just a few free agents. Most are of the regular veteran free agents however we do have a few restricted. I will not go into all of the details on the difference but suffice it to say veteran FA's are players who have 4 seasons under their belt and restricted are only 3 or less.
Some info on player salaries for this year. The minimal salary levels are the following numbers for years played coming into 2012, Rookies 390k, 1 year 465k, 2 year 540k, 3 year 615k, 4 to 6 years 700k, 7 to 9 years 825k, and 10 plus years is 925k. That is an across the board 15k jump in each level.
Now where do the Lions stack up for salaries. Well lets first say I currently list 43 players with contracts out of the 72 players we ended the season with in 2011. Since the offseason has started for us we can have a total of 80 players signed. So we are a ways to go. With either 6 or 7 picks in the draft (we could be getting Seattle's 6th rounder) and any suplemental picks for Free Agents lost we should get the number of players with a contract up to 50 at least. So with the usual UDFA we could be looking at least 5 more slots so we are about 25 free agents away. Now given that lets also discuss the salary cap one more time. Its only the 51 most richest contracts that matter. So with that out of the way lets start the discussion.
At present with the reserve/future contracts set at the rate for the players we are sitting at 111.9 million dollars. As you are aware Johnson has a contract of at least 20 million, Stafford of 17 million, Suh is at 13.5 million, VandenBosch is at 6.7 million, and Williams at 5 million. I should mention that only Williams has a contract that can be cut to save money for the top 5 money makers.
Now I should mention that the Franchise tag for Avril. Should we use that tag this off season we will be on the hook for either the average of the top 5 DEs or 120% of what he made last year. The choice is the one that is higher. Since Avril was playing on a tendered offer of not enough for his playing I am not even going to look at the 120%. However the top 5 DEs would mean a offer of roughly 10.5 to 11 million. So I would be VERY surprised to see us use that this year on him.
Next months post will be an update of any free agent signings of ours and where the cap sits at plus what our minimal salaries will be to sign the players not already signed.

I read it it will be closer to 125 million
with teams allowed to use 3 exemptions of 1.5 million each to re-sign their own players.
and the reason some teams are higher than other is that there was a 500k exemption that could be use against one of the teams highest paid players. Some teams did not chose to use this exempt due to the fact of the 90% floor cap for 2011.

To be honest
I am going by history of the NFL salary cap and the regular increases outside of the TV contracts. In those years it has gone up about 3 million per year like clock work. Now I am not saying you are incorrect but we do not know how much it will go up until after the Super Bowl as that is when the final jersey sales are done for the year. Do not forget all of this goes out the window next year IMHO as Nike is going to be changing uniforms. I plan on doing a major adjustment depending on the number of teams that go combat next year.
I know how the NFL gets the cap number for each season.
Projected AR(All Revenue) x CBA Percentage = Players Share of AR. This is called the Player Cost Amount. For 2011, that amount is $4,556,800,000 (roughly $142.4 M per team).
Player Cost Amount minus Projected League wide Benefits = Amount Available for Player Salaries. For 2011, that amount is $3,852,000,000.
Amount Available for Player Salaries / Number of Teams = Unadjusted Salary Cap per Team. For 2011, that amount is (3,852,000,000/32 =) $120.375 M.
The CBA Percentage is: Players receive 55% of AR (Media), 45% of AR (NFL Venture/Post Season) and 40% of AR (Local). Overall, the players receive between 47% and 48.5% of total revenue. More specifically, in years 2012-2014 the overall percentage is capped at 48%. For years 2015-2020 the percentage is capped at 48.5%.
The 5 million was an educated guess by Football Outsiders web site

Yes its a guess
At least mine is based on previous history. As for all your info Cruize I do know that info however it is not important in the long run for the average fan. I am just giving them the current info on salary cap I have plus the current cap info for the lions and the top 5 contracts.
I thought Williams salary will be 6.7 million for 2012 not 5 mil?
His base is 4.9 mil with a workout bonus of 100k plus a roster and a 3rd roster bonus of 1.7 million.
Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith 1945 - 2011 R.I.P.
I read it as 6.1 million for the coming season

The deal contains $16.3 million guaranteed, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, a $1.5 million first-year roster bonus, a second-year $6 million roster bonus, and a third-year roster bonus of $1.7 million. Williams can also earn annual $100,000 workout bonuses. 2011-2012: $4.9 million, 2013: Free Agent

no
he was in Cleveland in ’09. This was his 2nd year here.
Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith 1945 - 2011 R.I.P.
We traded for him
he is still on the contract he signed in Cleveland, I think.
so this last season was his 3rd. I think.
Not that it really matters. We are talking about 700k. A small amount really.

I guess that is why every team has a special accountant just to do the salary cap. I get a headache every time I start trying to figure out all the different things go into the cap.

Not sure about this but
Calvin’s contract number is around 16-17 due to his 4 million bonus not counting towards 2012 cap.
Cutting KVB will still cost 5 mil towards the cap. He needs to take a pay cut to his cap hit and save 1.7 million.
Cutting CWill makes the most sense as his cap hit will be around 100k, that’s about 5 mil right there.
Is it just me or do we have a lot of money tied up in the D-line? If we bring back Avril it is even more so.
Calvin's bonus DOES count toward the 2012 cap.
All performance bonuses that are accrued at the end of the season are charged against the cap for the following year. That mans we also have a $1 million bonus for Stafford to absorb as well.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Calvin Johnson will make roughly $22 million between his base salary and bonuses in the final year of his rookie deal in 2012.
That huge salary puts Johnson in a commanding position as he and Detroit enter into long-term talks, as it means he’d be in line for an astronomical $27.5 million under the franchise tag in 2013. According to Schefter, Johnson’s asking price will be “no less” than the eight-year, $120 million contract (which included $50 million guaranteed) Larry Fitzgerald signed last summer.

I don't agree with Schefter on the size of Calvin's contract.
I believe that Calvin will be willing to give the Lions a hometown discount in order to help keep the team moving forward. I really don’t see CJ as being the type of guy that will hamstring the team in order to get a fat paycheck. If I am wrong and Schefter turns out to be right, then the Lions will have to trade CJ because the size of his contract will destroy the forward momentum of the team.

Huh?
22+27= 49 million of guarenteed money without signing a damn thing…. over the next 2 years.
“hometown discount”? Pffft…. That translates to Hometown disrespect, if you ask me.
Calvin has earned all the money in the world. If Detroit wants a “discount”, they’ll make CJ’s 2nd contract, his last.
Long term, big guarentee. As a Fan, I want Calvin around longer than Barry was.

I can someone tell me why this wouldn't work
Football is the only sport that doesnt guarantee the entire contract.
So instead of doing a dumb 8 year contract that everybody knows he’ll be cut or take less money by the end of it, why don’t we sign CJ too a 6 year deal worth 80 million and guarantee the entire contract. I know if he blows out a knee were fucked but you take that chance in any sport with a mega contract…
So someone please tell me why that wouldn’t work???
You answered your own question
“…I know if he blows out a knee were fucked”
Just livin' the dream...
No owner is going to take that much risk.
It would set a contract precedent that would be used as every agent as leverage afterward. Any owner that did that to their fellow owners would be pitched out on their rear.

Then explain to me what the difference is please
Larry Fitz and his new contract that guarantees him $50 million, what happens if he has a career ending injury next year, he’s still getting that $50 million reguardless.
Now of coarse if CJ does it he’s still getting paid his full load, the point is not to get crazy with guaranteed contract. 6 years 80 million is not crazy, comes out to 13.3 million a year. CJ is due 20 million next season.
Tuff if you mean owners would be at risk then yes, if players are asking for 10 years 150 million then I would agree in football that would be owner suicide.
I just think it makes more sense than a 8 year 130 million with 60 millon guaranteed you know his agent will probably be going for.
But your probably right some fucking dumb owner down the line would give some crazy contract that would be used agaisnt the rest of the owners…
Well if that's the reason take the F@cking chance
You take that chance with any big contract
What if Fat Albert who just signed that 240 million dollar contract tears up his shoulder??
Too me it sounds like it would work, it’s just a taboo thing in the NFL not to guaratee the entire contract.
Well Lions break the mold, 6 years 80 million guaranteed!!!
Calvins Contract
I think me and Tuff (remind me if I am wrong) but we discussed a possible Calvin contract early this past season. Here is what we came up with,
Here is my original idea
Use a 30 million SB but I think I will add in another bonus that you are talking about which I like. I think a 50 million RB after the SB ends would work. My idea would end up being a 10 year 180 million contract with a total of 80 million in bonuses.
2012: 4mil (10 mil cap)
2013: 5.2mil (11.2 cap)
2014: 6.75mil (12.75 cap)
2015: 8.55mil (14.55 cap)
2016: 10.5mil (16.5 cap)
2017: 11mil (21 cap) start of the rooster bonus of 50 mil
2018: 12mil (22 cap)
2019: 13mil (23 cap)
2020: 14mil (24 cap)
2021: 15mil (25 cap)
That is my idea now with the idea of a rooster bonus. He is still getting near a 30 percent increase in each of the first 5 years. Then it levels out when he gets his rooster bonus. That would help out quite a bit in the later years.
That I think could work if we also add in a 500k additional bonus if he is the leading receiver in the NFL for the previous year. That would be for either Yards, catches, or TDs but only one bonus not 3. The key thing is the roster bonus money. If he accepts it we could spread that out for the final 5 years of his contract. That would keep him in Detroit until he is past his prime he if has one. IE he still preforms until he is 35 years old. He will be a free agent when after he turns 36. I think that is the best he can look at. I should also mention that yes he is going to lose out money but with Stafford with him and the way he has acted on the field I think he will be fine with a contract like this.
So really he's just getting a 5 year deal
If he’ll sign that I’ll be down with that contract, I doubt think he’ll sign it though
@MisterEK
After looking over that contract better it would never work, CJ will never sign a contract with only 30 million guraranteed. And everybody and there dog can tell that the lions would release him after the 2016 unless he took some major reduced salary.
From 2012 through 2016 would be a 5 year deal worth 65 million, which equals 13 million a year. I proposed a 6 year 80 million deal which would be 13.3 million a year. Me, you and Tuff are all thinking around the same ball park it’s the guaranteed money is what your gonna have to look for.
As I said there’s no reason signing him to a mega contact when he’ll knows he’ll just be cut half way through it. Roster bonuses only work if your on the team, your contract there’s no way the lions would keep him on the roster with that kind of bonus coming.
Best bet is to try the 5 year 65 million with it all guaranteed.
The issue coming up
Here is the deal, there is no way the Lions are going to be able to sign Cliff if Calvin takes 13 million next year or the year after. Until the TV money comes in come 2014 we are sitting not the best. Now here is the deal for the contract in regards to his age.
Lets just say he will be 27 come 2012. So in 2017 he will be 32. Now lets see the best WR ever I think folks will say Jerry Rice. Now Rice was still playing at pro bowl honors in 1994 when he was 32. Now from 94 to 98 seasons he averaged 86 receptions (1 yr he was injured) and had at least 1100 yards receiving. But lets just say Rice is not human. How about a more human WR, Randy Moss, which although is not the best candidate to prove my point however if you go strictly by the final 3 seasons he had he was averaging 60 catches and roughly 900 yards. Not the 20 million dollar man however you have to consider that he did not get a chance to play that much in 2010. He could still make a team next year and who knows what he could do if he is healthy and in shape.
How about some more WRs we can look at.
Marvin Harrison – 68 rec, 900 yds
Chris Carter – 85 rec, 1100 yds
Tim Brown – 84 rec, 1100 yds
Terrell Owens – 67 rec, 1000 yds
Isacc Bruce – 63 rec, 900 yds
Andre Reed – 50 rec, 700 yds
Now that is the retired or inactive list for the top 10 receivers in NFL history. I could go on for a bit longer if you want but I think you get the jest. Although he may not be playing to the level of right now he will still be a good player. Would we cut a player that will still get between 60 and 80 rec and around 1000 yards per year I am not sure but that is right now 20% of Staffords passing yards. I think it is safe to say that Calvin would get the RB if he is still playing at that high level. And lets be honest here very few WRs have lasted beyond the terms of this contract. Most have their final year being when they turn 35 or 36, Jerry Rice being outside the norm as he is not human.
