I need help
That is very hard for me to admit because I am very opinionated (as many of you have figured out) about the Lions and players. However, I am very conflicted about the upcoming draft and all the talk on POD about it and team needs has me in perpetual state of conflict. I will try to spare the undeniable myriad variables involved and complex details that go into team improvement and make this simple. I am a huge fan of P. Konz (C) and D. Kirkpatrick (CB) and believe both could be huge draft picks for this franchise both short and long term. For the HYPOTHETICAL purpose of argument if you could be guaranteed and arbitrary number, say 10-15%, of improvement and getting Konz relatively close to our draft position of 23 = run game improvement and moving up say 12 spots in the draft for Kirkpatrick = pass defense improvement, which do you pick? And why?
I understand many will not agree with either possibility. But again I am asking for help here so I can stop thinking about it. View the improvement any way you want i.e. explosion plays, yards per, time of pos, third downs, combination etc. If Mayhew and Swartz came to you after viewing your posts on POD and agreeing you had your finger on the pulse of the team and said pick one of these two paths, what would you say? I realize make believe is a bit immature for someone of my age (34) but I am desperate for alternate opinions that are germane to my dilemma. I hope you spend more time having fun with this than you do judging me. However, either is acceptable if you would do me the favor of stating a reasoned opinion. Thanks.

you seem very concerned with what others think about you?
but to help you out as you put it, i would say konz over kirkpatrick. i feel that our dbs are not as bad as everyone says. i mean they need upgrading, but they could afford to be taken later in the draft. but to be honest with ya, i don’t really know much about this draft class.
No concern here, Jared
it is just part of my demeanor to talk that way and even be self deprecating on occasion with no real meaning behind it. I like to give people a hard time, myself included.

Konz
I personally think the lack of a running game is a bigger problem than the secondary. However, even if you think the secondary is a bigger need, Kirkpatrick is worth less than Konz + the 2-3 draft picks we would need to give up to move up.
Besides, I’ve seen more than a few mock drafts where Kirkpatrick is gone in the top 5, so the price to move up might actually be more like 5 picks.
Agreed
Simply put, I don’t want us giving up any draft picks this year. Trading up would not be worth the price. My opinion is that we get 10-15% more yards in the running game with Konz and better pass protection, so I am a big fan of drafting him. Look for secondary help in the 2nd or 3rd rounds and in free agency.

Konz
Need to pave a path for the running game and provide a solid pocket for our franchise QB. Our team’s future all comes down to # 9, and keeping him protected has to be the priority, IMHO.
Lion fan in the Great Land!
I would take Konz
I do not feel the secondary is really as bad as many fear. I just think that they level of play dropped significantly when we had injuries and went to our backups. What we need in the secondary is depth, not necessarily a starter. Our cornerbacks are young enough where they have some years left, but our offensive line is getting long in the tooth.
It is not easy to get a guy that will be great as a rookie cornerback. Most of the time they play from the bench for a year or two. When a player is forced to play a lot as a rookie you get what we got from Aaron Berry. He was inconsistent, but showed some flashes of genuine promise. The problem is that you also have to suffer the growing pains.
Rule #1 of the NFL draft. You really cannot count on a rookie becoming an impact player because about 50% of all first round draft picks are not impact players. Dream all you want about rookies transforming the secondary or the offensive line, but that is pretty unlikely. There really have not been very many offensive tackles that have been strong in their rookie year, and kept it up, in the past few drafts. The same is true of rookie cornerbacks.

Agree with Tuffy.
Expecting rookies to come in and be significant contributors like that is being really optimistic. If you think that a center could improve our ground game by 10 to 15% BY HIMSELF is pretty ridiculous.
Same for that CB. Chances are the guy will contribute nothing.

Um
thanks for a completely useless response that was preemptively noted in the body of the fanpost.

You are welcome.
Always nice to converse with fellow Lions fans. Anything else I can help you with?

I'd take Konz
I don’t think we need starting CBs right away, our problems came from the lack of depth in our secondary. Because our second and third string CBs were so incredibly bad we had to rush Houston and Wright back before they were ready. If we picked up a CB later in the draft, in the third round or so, who could be that decent second-string CB with the promise of something more in the future, I think that would address our needs more nicely than drafting a starter and letting Houston or Wright go.
You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

I hear a lot on depth
isn’t it possible to improve and increase depth at a position by adding a starter and moving his predecessor to the depth position? For instance, Wright to the nickle and Berry to depth. Just playing devil’s advocate here.
Yeah, you could do that
But when you have an acceptable starter at one position and one starter that needs to be replaced at another, why would you?

I should say I wouldn't be upset if we took a CB in the first round
And if we were in a different situation I would agree with your point. With the injury to Backus though I think drafting O-Line help becomes that much more important.

yeah
I do believe a dominant C would make the LT position easier to handle, both from an organization and player perspective.

theway the lions draft as bpa that player will be konz as you our geting the top center in this year draft . as for your secondary pick he is not the top pick at cb in this draft and some say he is still raw at the cb spot .ithink he maybee the top 4cb in this draft . plus the lions have a ok center so they would not have to rush thier 1rstrd pick into the line up and who knowes if konz pick up the lions sytem he might play right way thier might be a true camp battle for the center spot on the line plus konz does has the skills to fill at gured if the lions need him to .
It definitely is a plus
that Konz could probably start at RG while picking up the finer points of C from Dom. Not sure how ol Dom would feel about that though.

ho cares how dom feels
the guy is on the brink of ending a long career. If he cant handle grooming a rook then fire his ass.

glad to see that everyone agrees with me so far.
i may be a new lions fan, but I’m still very knowledgeable of the team and the nfl in general. i know my shit lol. and i really think that our starting corners are good enough to keep. and our backups that were forced to start (berry and phonz) will get better. i can remember when i used to follow the titans and we had cortland finnegan, nick harper, and vincent fuller, who were our 3 starters (2 on the outside and fuller on nickel), well they all got hurt. it forced us to start rookie jason mccourty, rod hood (who we just signed) and rookie ryan mouton to start. that was when we went through a stretch were we couldn’t stop a single passing attack we faced all year and we got beat by the patriots 59-0 i think that year. they were all concerned that our young depth corners were busts. well just two years later the majority of the titans fan base is ok with letting finnegan walk now if he asks for too much based on the play since then from those same players, jason mccourty, ryan mouton who was unfortunately hurt all year this year, and alterraun verner (rookie last year). my point to all this rambling is that cb is a position that typically has to take a few years to develop. although there are exceptions, most cbs don’t start playing to their potential until they have been in the league at least a couple years. so imo berry and phonz will be fine. we just have to be patient with them. i really think the lions were in a similar situation this year as the titans were a couple years ago. but i also think it wouldn’t hurt to grab another strong cb in this draft if available at the right time. but imo i think that konz will be gone by our pick and we should just draft the best c or g left on the board.
Our running game problems.....
dont all stem from our line. We need a guy like Leshoure that can break an arm tackle at the front of the attack! that loosens Defesens up. Right now they have no reason to play up on us due to we have no power game. Good backs make an average o-line look good on both passing and run blocking
But when your center
Is getting blown back 8 times out of 10 and rarely ever gets a push it makes it hard for the back to run anywhere.

I'm honestly surprised
I thought for sure there would be some out there willing to role the dice and risk the farm for the hope of an 8-10 year all pro cb.
Again
I wouldn’t be opposed to it, but I think we need O-line help more.

BPA BPA BPA!
This is our team’s mantra, and we now believe!
That said, there are only a few positions we probably wont draft: QB, RB, TE, DT. All others are open to BPA. We’ve seen by the Lions play for Patrick Peterson last year, that if they think someone is truly a rare talent, they will go for it.
I think DB’s are the main focus. It’s a passing league, and one bad play from a DB can really change a game…Let’s find a stud DB this year! But only if it makes sense / BPA.
Just livin' the dream...
Well
thanks everyone. I am back to hoping for Kontz like I was a month ago. I think I may have over reacted to those last few games. However, I still contend that injuries will be a problem until we develop a bigger secondary. The amount of shoulder dislocations our db’s have had the last two years makes this staggeringly obvious to me. But it’s two birds with one stone, if we can run behind Kontz, the db’s will be on the field less while we gradually increase our db size.
Konz or Burfict
I like Konz a lot if he’d be there also.
Another name that intrigues me is Burfict. Everything I’ve read on him seems to say he’s a lot like Ray Lewis coming out of Miami. Ultra-competitive. Schwartz recommended strongly that Baltimore draft Lewis. It’s going to be interesting to see how the kids interviews go at the combine.
Konz
I think the Lions sign CB C. Finnegan in free agency. Than go best avil. in the draft. Konz I feel would play R.G. to start the year.
Personally
I am against any more db free agent signings. With the new salary structure in the draft and our cap issues we need to start developing that position through the draft. Guys like Trumaine Johnson, Donnie Fletcher, Chase Minnifield and Stephon Gilmore would be much better investments in my opinion.

As much as it makes sense to draft a CB after little thought...
But most CB’s in the NFL reach where they are going to peak at or during their 3rd full season. So Phonz should be near his peak during this next year, even after giving up what seemed like 10 ten TD’s to Jordy. And Aaron Berry, WHO I LOVE, should be pretty amazing not quite next year, although hopefully, but probably the year after.
