Let's give Alex Smith a round of applause.

First of all, screw the 49'ers. Hate that team.

That being said though, I truly do feel like Alex Smith was dealt the shortest end of the stick imaginable. Dude's had NO consistency in his coaching staff, and had a ton of pressure put on him to win games from the get go. He's never seemed like a bad guy, and he always took a lot of flak from the media and fans of both the 49'ers and other franchises. After suffering through 2 years of the 'your QB can't hang at the NFL level' talk (Smith supporters have suffered for 7), I know that personally I was so happy when Stafford played all 16 games this season and shut everyone the hell up. So in all earnestness, let's give Alex a hand for showing up big in the playoffs, and for also finally having a coaching staff that recognizes who he is and what he can/can't do, and using that to their full potential. I'm happy for the guy.... just not his team.

You bet!

He did play a good game, kudos to him. He showed a lot of grit and went to the smart mosey (Vernon Davis).

What about that defense, did they ever put pressure on Brees?

hmm???

same formula we all knew we needed to use. 49ers executed; we didnt! lesson learned. no more offense. were good there. we NEED to build defense and special teams now.

Packers, Saints, and Patriots all disagree with this.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

... and look where the saints are right now.

if we were an AFC team, maybe not. but we are in the NFC. we are gonna need to improve upon our defense and special teams to get out of the NFC Champ. game. and dont get too ahead of yourself, packers havent even played a playoff game yet this year. and the G-Men have a stellar defense.

one more thing...

i really want to see a 49ers / ravens superbowl now that i say all of that. 2 great D’s. that would prove my point and put the NFL on notice. i know this is a passing league now, but i still subscribe to the old addage of defense wins championships. so, that being said… Go Harbaughs… i guess…

just wanted to come by today to say

i told you so. defense wins championships yall. giants could beat 49ers, but i dont see pats beating ravens. ravens secondary is playing about as good as it gets right now. i understand your sentiment about the harbaughs, but i think it is a good reminder to all offensive folks that defense still wins championships!

by dfwLions on Jan 16, 2012 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Easy killer....

Before your head explodes from all that self-inflation, remember that the 3 of the past 5 Super Bowl Champions have been very offense-oriented. The last two champions were the Packers and Saints who both fielded less-than-stellar defenses (and New Orleans beat the Colts – who also were offense-oriented).

I think it’s safe to say that Green Bay laid an egg in an important game and the Giants played very well. I think the Giants win against them only 2 times if they played 10 games against each other. Green Bay had lots of turnovers and drops… both very uncharacteristic of that 15-1 team. New York deserved to win, but just remember before you puff your chest out too far that 60% of the last 5 Super Bowls were won by offensive teams (and even the last 10, if you care to back a ways….)

by DrewsLions on Jan 16, 2012 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

your right

steelers are an offensive juggernaught! what was i thinking? we might as well release all our defense, we dont need em. o.k. back to reality. heads on tight, no risk of exploding.

giants beat pats in 07, why because of their defense and one amazing david tyree catch. steelers 2 superbowls, why? DEFENSE. if we played defense the way the giants did, we woulda beat the pack too. if we woulda played defense the way the 49ers did, we woulda beat the saints too. you CANNOT honestly say that if we didnt play better defense, we would still be done for the year. it takes a complete team and the Saints, Packers, and Patriots ARE NOT complete teams. too one-sided to go deep.

its time to stop looking to keep up with these teams and start looking to stop those teams. and you do that with a better than average defense! nuff said.

by dfwLions on Jan 16, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

i see the Giants as the most complete team this year

they got it together at the right time. i just dont wanna see a 2007 rematch. we already saw that and we know how it turned out. i dont like the harbuaghs. i know it probly seems like i do, but i really dont. john never even played in the NFL (although, i know our coach never did either, but HE is OUR coach). and jim is, well, jim. i give him the nod over john though. do i want to see jim harbaugh win a superbowl in his first year as head coach in the NFL? HELL NO! but i dont want giants and pats more. its defenses that do the unthinkable. and we ALL saw that this weekend. Broncos D sucks, and so does Tebow. that is why Pats advanced. dont read too far into that one.

by dfwLions on Jan 16, 2012 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

i don't want another 9-7 champion

Giants play lousy in half their games meanwhile
49ers stay in every game.. even Packers…
imo, Giants don’t deserve it like the rest of teams that are left

billy- i think you stumbled onto to something here...

which team is the lesser of evils. i cant stand any of them, but somebody is gonna win this thing. and i think it will be the team with the best defense.

Don't be a complete douche

You know what I am saying. You are just scrambling to make yourself look like less than a complete idiot here.

All teams need a good defense, but to simply look at what happened in the 2011 playoffs and say “see… defense wins championships and we need to change course and stop playing lights out offense” is moronic and you need to get your head checked. Like I said… last year the OFFENSIVE-MINDED Packers beat the Steelers who boasted the best defense in the league. And GB only had 10 regular season wins. The year before that, NONE of the best defenses made it to the big show.

You are all hot air and no common sense. Give your mouth a rest.

What a joke.

Not what you wrote, I mean you. Well, what you wrote is kinda ridiculous too. Maybe not the overall historical point of it, but your epic fail in using the English language and overall communication skills. Somewhat lacking, methinks. Let me guess… 8th grade, right? Oh sorry… I was referring to the educational level you finished. Anywho……

Listen, this is not 1934… it’s not 1966, nor is it 1985. This is the year 2012 and with the emphasis on rules that favor offenses and protection of the quarterback, defenses are simply not as effective as they used to be. That is not an all-encompassing statement, but just a fact about the evolution of professional football. We see yardage totals creeping up year-in, year-out. Why? Because defenses are getting MORE effective? Pfft… yeah, right.

We see 23 yr-old QB’s like Stafford capable of producing un-Godly amounts of yardage and points because the league is geared that way. I am not saying defenses are irrelevant… that is idiocy. What I am saying is that the age-old, outdated adage of “defense wins championships” is moronic and shows your complete lack of independent thought. You certainly benefit from a good defense and a defense CAN win you a championship if it’s good enough, but the team that wins the Super Bowl is the one that has the BEST TEAM throughout the playoffs. Be it a stifling defense or a high-octane offense, the best 60 minutes wins. That said, trend analysis shows that teams are producing more points and more yards and teams can win with less defense now more than ever. Get your head out of the sand and into the mainstream.

So… while you can use Google and quote other articles and get all jiggy wit Wikipedia, you fail to realize what is happening to the league around you. Suffocating defenses like the old Steeler and Bears’ defenses are tough to run because the rules favor points and offenses. NFL execs understand this fact, yet the undersized hamster in your head spinning that tiny wheel can’t run fast enough for you to catch up with this mindset.

Now be a good boy and run along……

by DrewsLions on Jan 18, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

P.S.....

The Patriots win the Super Bowl this year. Yeah… the one piloted by the 5K passer Tom Brady… with one of the worst ranked defenses in the league.

by DrewsLions on Jan 18, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

not to jump into a fight but

IMO it is not totally “moronic” to say defense wins championships. the 49ers defense clearly helped win the NFC west, and the Giants D has helped win the NFC East.
I think to say only offense or only defense… or only special teams .. wins championships is a folly. NE’s defense may be a problem, if the offense struggles- although Baltimore isn’t exactly an offensive juggernaut.

by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Jan 18, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Okay...

so look at dfwLions’s context of saying that… then read my responses. Get it?

I don’t disagree that defenses CAN win championships or HELP win championships, but so do offenses. So should I run around shouting “Offenses win championships, bitches!!”? No… that would be moronic. Just as it is moronic to run around shouting that the only way to win a championship is to have a good defense… especially in this day and age… when the last two SB winners won it because of offense… and likely will again this year (Patriots).

by DrewsLions on Jan 18, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

I like the Niners chances versus the Pats

and I guess NY’s too. I think the Pat’s defense could get exposed and if they face a defense up to the task , then I don’t know how likely the Pat’s are the SB champ. I may have to eat my words though.

anyways, I agree that it takes a full team, and I also think a team’s weakness gets exposed in the postseason- be it turnovers, penalties, special teams, etc… This could hurt the Niners is their inability to score TD’s but the defense makes then a threat in every game this season.

by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Jan 18, 2012 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Any team with...

Tom Brady at the helm gets my vote against Alex Smith or even Eli Manning. I know… the Giants beat them the first time, but I doubt that happens again. Any given Sunday… for sure, but my money’s on the Pats.

by DrewsLions on Jan 18, 2012 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think Brees gets your vote over Alex too

I’d rather the Pats the the Giants. Just feel like I want the teams that were the best all season to meet and play their best games against each other in the championship.
Just because the Gianst are healthy, and only started to play well and consistent late in year should not be the reason they get the Lombardi

by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Jan 19, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

I would take Brees.

Play that game 10 times, I still the Saints win that one 7 out of the 10.

I agree with the best teams playing and winning. I don’t see the magic of ’07 recurring for the Giants. I think they lose this weekend, then the Pats knock off SF in the big show. Just a gut feel….

Justin Smith is a stud!

Maybe their D_Line is light years ahead of our Wide 9 lol! I have to admit that the Niners have a nasty DL and great hitters and tacklers.

With continuity, we may get close next year! The talent is there so it’s up to the coaches to design a scheme that fits our players best.

i really like jim harbaugh and what he has been able to do with this team.

schwartz and the harbaugh brothers are some of my favorite coaches in the nfl. i would love to see the niners and the ravens in the Super Bowl since our team is out. alex smith is finally playing to his potential and that team’s talent is finally showing up on the field. they may be good for years to come and a team that either give us headaches or a team that we disappoint repeatedly. i just see the niners and the lions meeting in the playoffs a lot of the next decade.

Looks like you might get your wish granted.

The Giants don’t look like any kind of fluke to me. Destroyed the Falcons, then beat up the Packers at Lambeau.

And the Packers had the active support of the officiating crew in that game. Some of the worst [ the roughing on Osi and the “non-fumble” by Jennings] calls of the year in the Packers favour of course.

was had a very difficult time dealing with those calls.

Just flat out disgusting. The Bias was so clear. 14 points for the Pack off of bad penalties or calls. That game, fairly officiated, was a blowout.

Is the NFL going to start keeping track of that like it does points off of turnovers?

They could call it Points Off Refs. Or Brady/Brees points.

Alex Smith, I will agree on. Good to see someone finally capable of making good on their ‘potential’, inasmuch as a draft position dictates it.

I hope the Giants beat the Packers and move on to crush the Niners, to play Baltimore and get smoked.

I have made many negative comments about Alex Smith this last year....

..but I have to admit that he played one hell of a last five minutes of a game on Saturday. I still don’t think he is any more than an average QB.

But he deserves all the praise he gets for his finish against the Saints. Bravo.

Let's give AleX Smith a round of.....

kicks to the groin. Hate the guy. Still think he’s a pretender… one good season or not. When you set career highs in yardage and TD’s at 3142 and 17, respectively and the you get hailed for that… I am not on board. His TEAM played well this year and he did enough not to lose games for them. He had his moments against the Saints, but one game does not a good quarterback make. Still contend he is a phony and the Giants will win next week.

who is Jimmy Raye? and we know what Mike Martz did to Stanton

Alex Smith had been robbed of any chance for success by the disfunction of the coaching staff…
not only changing OC’s each year, but also total philosophical styles, with over matched headcoaches.

I don’t get the Alex Smith hate- we’ve seen him win at least two games with throws at the end. I am not saying he’s better than so and so, but I think his last 4 years were a wash and he shouldn’t be judged too harshly given the circumstance that was the Niners.
