2013 mock? Say whaaaaaa?!

So I know it's a little early to start talking about the 2013 draft...let alone the 2012 draft, but I really want to see that linebacker who wears number 5 in a Lions jersey in the future. Kids a playmaker. I hope you all know who I'm talking about.

On another note I think the two biggest areas we need to concentrate on in this upcoming draft are o-line and defensive secondary. We need taller cornerbacks who actually have a chance to make plays on people like Graham, Gronkowski, Jennings...pretty much all the star receivers in the NFL. I'm tired of drafting running backs and hoping they can be the next Sanders. Give the guys we have a line that can open holes and see what happens. 90% of the game is won in the trenches. Build from there.

The first two

“star receivers” you listed are actually TE’s, who are covered by linebackers and not defensive backs.

Also,

I’m afraid I do not know which linebacker wears #5. However, at this moment, I am mocking Vontaze Burfict to the Lions. Perfect Mayhew pick. As for your mock, well, you didn’t really mock anything, so yeah…

He spent a lot of time on the bench this year for "conduct detremental to the team"

Didn’t he?

I know he got benched a few times because of something other than his play.

Really?

All I’ve heard about him is he is considered by some to be “dirty”, but is a hard worker, and plays with a lot of emotion and a great motor.

Don't quote me

But I’m pretty sure he was benched for something stupid he did. I’d have to look it up, but I’m pretty sure.

Yup, he did.

He is a guy who is just flat angry and mean. He had so many personal fouls that his coach had to bench him to try and get him under control.

So you really want Te'o

And follow that statement by saying the secondary and O-line are the biggest areas of need? So you are a BPA guy? I…..I am so confused.

More 'if's'

…If I only knew who you were talking about…theres like alot of #5’s in college football…but IF this #5 kid is a LB and is a big time playmaker.. he prob wont be around long in the 2013 draft meaning he’ll go near the top of the draft. That is IF you forsee a total Lions collapse next year…my hope is they’ll be drafting near the bottom of the pile for the next decade

by Maxha on Jan 16, 2012 10:21 PM EST reply actions

Manti Te'o is the LB he's referring to.

And hopefully we’ll have Tulloch locking down the inside for a long time, so that’s moot.

Tulloch

Tulloch is good, but not good enough to lock down MLB. Notice he needs alot of help bringing down RB’s. That’s not a quality you want, we need a big run stopping MLB. Alabama’s Hightower or Notre Dames Manti Re’o will be the Lions 1st rd pick IMO.
Tulloch will be re-signed but to play OLB and back up MLB. The Lions LB’s should look like this: Middle:Te’o or Hightower, OLB: Tulloch, Durant, Levy, Carpenter.
1st rd. MLB
2nd rd DE
3rd rd CB
4th rd OL

Te'o is staying in school, which is why he mentioned the 2013 draft.

I wouldn't say I've noticed Tulloch needing a lot of help bringing down RBs.

In our one playoff game this year, Tulloch led the team with fifteen tackles, eight of which were solo, seven assisted. This is the highest in all three tackling splits for the entire team.

He also led the team in solo tackles for the season en route to a respectable solo tackle total (and total tackles in general.) That doesn’t scream “needs a lot of help.”

He may not have had a 160 tackle season this year, but he’s a stud, and he’s certainly no Pat Angerer.

To be fair

Ernie Sims was our leading tackler with 140+ tackles for several years. LB stats are misleading.

by Kalzilla on Jan 17, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I hit enter too soon

I think Tulloch is a stud and our most important free agent to re-sign. He’s only 26 or 27 years old too. I’d be open to replacing Levy and maybe Durant but I really don’t think we need a new MLB.

by Kalzilla on Jan 17, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Tulloch is good, re-sign him for sure

Tulloch does not bring down runners on most 1st hits, he always has help tackling. It happened in the GB game and Saints game. It’s mainly because they play the wide sytle defense and he is left alone trying to cover TE’s and the middle of the field. 5’11" 237. Our defense needs that big MLB 6’3" 250-260 to be elite. I guess thats why Mel Kiper also has the Lions taking NC MLB Zach Brown @ #23 in his 1st mock draft.. He must feel the same way, but he also stated if a top OLT is there @ #23 to take him, and I agree. Backus is 34 and injured, so it’s a position the Lions need to upgrade on. Top priority is IMO MLB, OLT, CB….top priority list.

by Suhfan on Jan 19, 2012 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

You're pointing to the last two games we played.

And saying things like “he always has help tackling”, when the fact of the matter is over the year this is not a true statement. Yes, from time to time he may need an assist; from time to time he may need to assist others. But I disagree vehemently with the idea that we require a 6’3 mauling MLB to be elite. The short players can bring down the big players easy, it’s called going low with proper technique.

Remember, Ray Lewis is 6’1. London Fletcher is 5’10. Jon Beason is 6’0. Patrick Willis is 6’1.

I agree, even if they re-sign Tulloch

If Brown is avail at 23 I wouldn’t slit my wrists if the Lions nabbed him. They can rotate LB’s like they do the D-line. I would consider a CB or Left OT first but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.. Now if they grab another WR or RB I may run full bore into a brick wall head first and after i come back from my coma (hopefully in time for the 1st pre-season game) I may ask who they got to block for them..

by Maxha on Jan 22, 2012 2:08 AM EST up reply actions

LBers

Generally lead every team in tackles, it doesn’t mean they are helping the team the most. We need a Urlacher, Lewis, Willis type LB to become elite. If they don’t improve linebacker, the same will happen next season, teams will run all over us. True about Ernie Sims, to small to become an elite LB, a good fill in, fast for a tampa 2 def, but not a Lion scheme. Lions aren’t gonna improve the D-line, so we need bigger LB’s that can fill the gaps.IMO

by Suhfan on Jan 19, 2012 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

The Lions draft for need

If its a DE on top of that board, guess what will happen? The Lions just got themselves a new DE.

So no one knows if the lions “aren’t gonna improve the D-Line”.

by Arrogant on Jan 20, 2012 2:24 AM EST up reply actions

The implication was that Tulloch needs help

When clearly the numbers and the eye test do not match up with that unless you close your scope to only the most recent of games.

I’m not seeing how Tulloch isn’t very good. I’m not seeing why that is a need, why we need an elite MLB, considering we don’t run a tampa 2 or a 3-4 (Urlacher, Willis, and Lewis all play in those that rely heavier on LBs and MLBs in particular. Wonder why?).

Tulloch is good, I like him but...

What happened to your leading the team in tackles argument??? Tulloch 84 solo tackles, 27 assisted = 111 for 2011. Levy had 109 tackles. So they’re equal? Your 1st staement was he led the team in tackles, that makes him the best LB?? Levy had 2 less tackles. Like I said, LBers lead most teams in tackles, so that stat doesn’t help your argument for keeping Tulooch. (Urlacher, Willis, Lewis ) would all be great fits on any team or scheme, they are top tier LBers in the league period. The Lions have average LBers, useable yes, upgrade needed, yes. Salary cap issues may leave Tulloch off the team this year also. UFA tulloch-3.2 mil, KVB-4.5 mil, Williams 4.9 mil, Hill 2.9 mil, Backus 5.4 mil…al UFA. So the Lions will take the BPA, IF a OLT is there @ #23 then Backus will probably be gone. More than likely all the top CB’s will be gone before #23 pick, likely a LBer or DE to replace some older players. We can use Tulloch next season, sure but eventually they will draft a MLB. <I’m not seeing how Tulloch isn’t very good.> When you attend the games you can see alot of his missed tackles, not able to keep up with bigger TE’s in the middle of the field. We still need to see who the Lions get in FA, so this is all speculation. Fun yes, but speculation.

My only argument that factored tackles in

Was the one about Tulloch needing help to bring down ball carriers. I can’t help it if you misinterpreted what I was saying. I was pointing out how he led the team in solo tackles, along with the aside that he led the team in total.

Whatever, I proved my point and destroyed yours

Tulloch 111 total tackles…Levy 109 total tackles. Levy almost led the team in tackles, big deal, he’s no lock down LB and he was 2 shy of tulloch. We need an upgrade at LB, thats all I’m saying…Book it!

by Suhfan on Jan 21, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Uh, no, you did no such thing.

You said he needed a lot of help bringing down RBs. His solo tackle ratio screams otherwise.

Thanks.

LB upgrade needed, again

I pointed out the last 2 games @ GB and NO because they totaled 90 pts and over 1100 total yrds against out defense, but you can go back to the last 11 games where our defense was weak and NOT stopping the run. Keep dreaming by counting Tullochs tackles 111 total. means nothing. Tulloch needs help or change the def. scheme. Our LB’s basically are NOT good enough to fill the gaps, or stop anyone. 111 total tackles, thats a joke for a MLB. Now you wanna say solo tackles when your original post stated he led the team in tackles (by 2) wow! Give us all a break, you probably never have been to see a game but you wanna talk about tackles. Nice try.

I will respectfully disagree with you.

Tulloch was very god this past season. He was a consistent play maker that filled the right gaps and was often called upon to keep tabs on the opposing QB when we played one that could also run the ball.

Tulloch was instrumental in taking away Tim Tebow’s running options when we played Denver. He was all over Josh Freeman in the first game of the season and set the tone for the remainder of the season that Freeman had.

He also had the ability to make plays in coverage like the interception against Tony Romo that capped the Lions comeback win over the Cowboys. or his pick on Cam Newton that sealed the Lions win over the Panthers.

Tulloch forced a fumble by Marques Colston in our playoff game against New Orleans. While he made some mistakes in that game he was hardly the reason for the loss. I place that blame squarely on the defensive line who let Brees have all day to throw the ball. When you watched the 49ers put pressure on Brees the following week then you saw what could have been had out defensive line performed up to their lofty billing.

I am just not buying this “Tulloch is not good enough” slant.

id like to see some CBs that can play physical at the line

seems like those 5-10 yard cushions really made our DL pressure moot. but if we can make them hold onto the ball 1 second longer, that gives the DL a chance to cause some havoc.

the OL, they are going to have to start working on it this season, if nothing else to start thinking about replacing the old guys. i think there will be some movement. where i disagree is with the RB situation. leshoure is a giant question mark next year, we all know best needs a reduced role next year at the very least, and smith is too fragile to be a workhorse back too. i think they need 1 more guy to take touches away from those guys and hopefully help keep those guys healthy. they could do that in the draft, of FA, or even trade, but its something that i strongly believe will be addressed this offseason.
