Oh Matthew Stafford - Only named comeback king!
Stafford as usual has mounted another comeback. Yeah even with the season over and having mounted comebacks against the Raiders, Cowboys, Vikings and others. The NFL has as we have all screamed for named our franchise QB Matthew Stafford comeback player of the year. After being only the 4th QB in history to put up 5,000 yards. After having 2 years of injurys and playing every game including a play off berth in his 3rd seasons. This award in my mind was a given but others had Alex Smith. Looks like it's Stafford all the way.

I thought Steve Smith was worthy of the award too
congrats to Stafford too. Hats off to him and many more seasons like it.
Actually thought Willis Magahee was a sleeper pick for the award too

too many nagging injuries
but his first half performance was spectacular. espcially when you consider the B issues they were having.
just read hes the youngest since Marino
man, he is tied to marino in a lot of ways. it seems like i am constantly hearing " first player since Dan Marino", or “youngest since Marino in 1984” sure hope hes able to accomplish that one thing that eluded marino in his career.
WOW thats awesome

I often smile when thinking our young QB is of the caliber of Dan Marino...:o)

oh yeah, thats what i am sayin here
and all respect due to mr. marino. marino was great, but it sure will be sweet to see our boy hoist that trophy and actually seperate himself from the great one. but am i the only one who noticed that i was hearing " ….. since marino", like, all season long?
He also kind of reminds me of Brees
In that he can put the ball where he wants to, and he’s not afraid to make those “risky” throws, even if it blows up in his face every now and then.

yeah thats kinda eerie if you think about it.
hollywood couldnt even write that script
agreed
the parallels to Bobby Layne are down right freaky. I read the list off to my dad one day (who watched Layne play) and he thought I was making some of the stuff up.

Mayhew
is so good at Mayhewing people that they didn’t even realize he was exec of the year. SanFran was all Harbaugh IMO. Cool stuff for Staff though.
Look at the jump in his numbers
I think of “comeback” as a player who has made significant progress from the previous year. Staff went from nothing to a 5K season. I don’t think any QB has ever done that.
I'm glad Staff got the award and finally some recognition
but to be honest, how is he a comeback player? This was his first full season. He had nothing established to come back from…….except injuries.
Willis McGahee won it in his first pro year.
Without having anything established to come back from.

I think the AP still has to give out a comeback player of the year award.
Although I want to see Stafford win it, I would not be surprised to see D’Qwell Jackson win.
It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

What if Bobby Layne was Staffords biological father...
Stranger things have happened. Geographically speaking – its definitely possible…
Except...
Bobby Layne died in 86…

Sounds about right to me.
Bobby Layne dies conceiving Matt Stafford on 12-1-86.
Stafford then has a 14 month and 1 week Gestation period (cause that’s how Awesome he is).
Then, Matthew Stafford is born on 2-7-88.

Someone here said "approaching ELITE"...
I’m not sure who it was now, but I thought “Approaching??” Jesus…does he have to pass for 6000 yards and 60 TDs in a single season before he IS elite? I’d say his performance this season was nothing short of ELITE, and being 23 years old and being able to say that he is only one of 4 NFL QBs to EVER pass for over 5000 yards in a single season is a major statement.
We done found ourselves a REAL quarterback…look out NFL, here come the Detroit Lions!

He doesn't need to improve on this
but if he put up 4,000 and 35 next year I’d call him elite. I’m not looking for improvement, just consistency.

Exactly
I’m looking for consistency as well. Ideally I dont want to see another 5k yard year. I’d like to see him down to about 3600 yards. This will mean we have a running game and a balanced attack. Imagine how bad Staff will carve up defenses if they have to account for our running game! I see good things coming. Especially if we can get the line to open holes or if I had my way replace a member or 2 of the line and shore up the secondary. I also wouldn’t mind getting a solid LB to replace Levy. I’m not saying fire Levy but he is medicore at best. I’d love to see a fast hard hitting LB there who could cover. Then have Levy for depth.

I hope if we have a competent running game we won't need him to break Drew Brees record next year.
Not that he couldn’t.

To be elite IMO
He needs playoff wins.
List the Top 5 QB’s
Either Manning
Brady
Big Ben
Brees
Rodgers
All of them have championships. That is what you need in this league to belong with the elite. Stafford is a great player and right now he the closest QB to joining that group.
Rivers – Flacco – Ryan are all well below Stafford, but its hard to put Matthew above any of the Top 5.
He's the third best QB in that list
Just because the TEAM around him isn’t good enough, YET, to win playoff games, does not mean that he himself is not an elite player. 23 years old and passing for over 5000 yards and 40 TDs in a single season? Yeah…that is the definition of elite. The only caveat I can come up with would be if he is not consistently over 4000 yards after this year, unless they change the offense’s system to where they run a lot more and pass a lot less.

He's third?
So who is he above? Brady, Brees, or Rodgers? I know people are use to hating on Eli, but dude has been an absolute stud this year. I can see a slight argument for Stafford over Ben, but its still a nearly impossible on to make.
Clearly he was above Brady this year
So there you go.

I understand that you categorize playoff wins as a relevant stat when it comes to "elite" QBs...
But I think the fact that the 23 year old QB is only one of four players EVER, in the history of the NFL, to pass for over 5000 yards in a single season trumps all other stats. That IS elite man…and I don’t care what anybody says about it.

It's interesting to look back
at all the pre-season and mid-season prognosticators discussing quarterbacks.
Here’s how Bill Simmons ranked and described Stafford in October:
13. Matt Stafford If He Stays Healthy
The “If” is pulsating right now. Look, some people just aren’t built to get hit all the time. For instance, I have a bad back, bad knee and bad shoulder right now. I’ve always been getting hurt dating back to when I broke my collarbone twice as a kid. My son? He’s built like a 1780s blacksmith. All muscle with one of those hard pot bellies. He’s fallen down stairs, fallen off beds, fallen off playhouses … it just doesn’t matter. He’s a wrecking ball. I do think some people are more likely to get injured than others. For whatever reason, Matt Ryan’s body was built to weather that crazy ankle roll last week. Had it happened to Stafford? Maybe not.
Funny how he had the same sort of injury-prone knock against Michael Vick, yet ranked him 6th. Now that the season has ended, I’m pretty sure that we won’t be hearing any more about Stafford’s injury risk. And I don’t know of any reasonable argument against stating that Stafford has jumped Schaub, Ryan, Romo, Cutler, and Vick (who were higher in Simmons’ rankings) as QBs you would want to go forward with.
I don’t know about the “elite” category because that is usually earned by at least a couple of full seasons and long playoff runs, but he is absolutely and unequivocally a franchise quarterback, and only a handful of teams have those. I would not trade #9 for any other QB in this league. (I would not have said that before the last two Packers games).
Completely agree
Even though I don’t put him in the “elite” camp yet, I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. 5 years from now, Brady and Brees will be out of the league (or damn near to it), and Matt will be 28.
The Lions future is great, EVERY year is the Lions year with Matthew at the helm.
