Lions Notes: Mike Martz Retires From Coaching
- Ndamukong Suh apparently stopped by Roger Goodell's office today, but Goodell was not there.
- Speaking of Suh, he went on CBS's pre-game show on Sunday and ended up being grilled about the stomping incident on Thanksgiving.
- Former Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz has decided to retire from coaching.
- Matthew Stafford and Tony Scheffler had some funny tweets about the bad no-fumble call in the Packers/Giants game on Sunday.
- Stafford, Suh, Calvin Johnson and Kyle Vanden Bosch are projected to account for nearly $60 million against the salary cap in 2012.
- Where in the world is Jim Schwartz? Scouting players at the East-West Shrine Game. (Via Michael Schottey)
- The Colts have finally decided to fire Jim Caldwell. I'm not sure what took them so long.
- After reading this piece from the Kansas City Star on what allegedly goes on behind the scenes with the Chiefs, I'm quite glad the Lions didn't hire Scott Pioli as their general manager.
- The coaches in the Pro Bowl will be the Packers for the NFC and the Texans for the AFC.
- The Giants/Packers game on Sunday was the most-watched divisional-round playoff game ever.

I am sure that Mayhew and Lewand will be working on the Cap situation.
Calvin’s share of the Cap is the largest, so this provides a huge reason for the Lions to extend his contract to make that number smaller. There are a few other moves that will be made to bring the Lions under the Cap and allow them to sign a few FAs.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

That Pioli piece was really good.
I wanted him to come to Detroit in the worst way. I was extremely wary of Mayhew, but it’s great to see an environment with the Lions that is resolute and focused without being a power struggle.
Schwartz and Mayhew just seem to want to put a good football team together, and they are cooperative in that. Nothing destroys the chemistry of a team like disorder in the ranks above them. It’s a trickle down effect in any organization, and I’m glad that the effect that our team leaders have upon our players seems optimistic and open.

I worked
as upper management in a place and for a man like that once. Thank God for Mayhew is all I can say.

Chiefs fans generally do not like Pioli from what I've read.
whether it’s his approach to management or just personally, or his track record so far in Kansas City.

Agree with all the comments above ..
Our rookie contracts are killing us .. No team can be competitive if about 50% of cap is going to just 4 players.
I wanted Pioli too .. but on the flip side, I wasn’t happy with keeping Mayhew THEN .. It felt like an extension of the bad era .. I wanted a clean house .. I am glad I was wrong …
I know Martz was crazy and his quarterbacks got killed .. but he is/was a true genius. He made Kitna look like a pro bowler .. and just wait till Cutler crashes next year …
Pioli sounds like a nutjob.
I’m glad we didn’t end up with him and I’m glad Mayhew put him in his place. Guys like him need to be taken down a peg.
While I too would love to have him back,
Barry is just way too old :( I think he’s like 55 now. BTW, wtf did Caldwell have to do with knocking Barry out?

That's not possible. Who would want him back? He hasn't gotten better since he left the Lions.
No slogans. Just win!!!
ya that's what I'm thinking
he had to have meant Barry, who in their right mind would want Ernie??

It makes more sense that Mayhew was hired now
At first I was ticked off, I mean who hires the guy’s apprentice who screwed a franchise? I never really stopped to think that the 50 guys who play every Sunday are a small percentage of the real work force. Not to mention the employees are in a much more dire situation if they lose their job. Completely new level of respect for Mayhew.
