I know alot of people want us to draft an offensive lineman round 1 but I honestly can't see it. All Mayhew has done since he has been here is draft playmakers in the early rounds and developmental lineman in the mid to late ones (which is a smart strategy in my opinion). The lions were one of the highest scoring teams in the league this year, despite not having a ground game and I'm going to make a bold prediction that once Leshoure and Best get healthy our o-line is going to look alot better. Plus hopefully Mayhew will bring back K-Smooth and add an actual fullback to our roster sometime soon. While I do believe our o-line is subpar, I don't believe it's what lost us the playoff game to the saints. It was our secondary. In today's NFL you need to stop the pass. Based on what I've read Janoris Jenkins seems to be the best cover corner in this years class and he may slip considerably in the draft ala Jimmy Smith. While some of you may be quick to point out his character issues, Mayhew has proven that he will take the most talented player on his board regardless (just look at our first 3 picks last year). Any way I hope that we atleast bring this guy in and check him out as I would love to see him opposite of Houston next year. IN MAYHEW I TRUST!

Isn't he like 5'9"? I hear hes a lot like Asante Samule
We wont have a full back because we don’t need a full back for our system. We just insert Will Heller in where Felton would be.
I think our O-line is avg…Above avg Pass protection…Below avg run blocking.
+1 to all of this

Since when did
height determine how good a corner is? and I would love a mini Asante we need a ball hawk in our secondary. I’m sick of having DB’s that can run but have zero ball skills

its like they dont even turn their head.
when receivers turn their head our secondary, half the time, looks like they are wondering what the guy is looking at.
While I agree with your assertion that we probably won't draft OL in the first,
a running back does not make an offensive line better, in any way. You cannot have a running game without the holes to run through, period.
The exception to this rule, of course, is Barry Sanders.
Regardless, I’ll be happy with whoever we take really. I think we have to accept that our OL is gonna be pretty much the same next year, outside of Leonard Davis taking Peterman’s spot (which I could see us doing to trade Peterman during/before the draft to move up). Cherilus and Sims aren’t going anywhere. Backus looks to be locked in for another year, Raiola is probably gonna play until he gets a ring or pops a knee. He’s a captain. As with KVB, I think he can squat on his starting position as long as he wants, unless we get some sort of break.

Hopefully we can get some of these contracts restructured.
KVB’s, Raiola’s, Backus. I don’t know much about restructuring contracts or even if these guys would be willing to accept the “hometown discount” to help the team out. They are up their in age and not as effective on the field as they once were but they have that leadership quality as veterans on this team. So I would love to keep those guys.
I would hope Mayhew goes to the Sanders's house
and tells him “write down a number, don’t declare for the draft. That number is yours.”

Yeah, that would be ideal

Yeah but
This line made holes decently well after the first couple games. We were middle of the pack in YPC for a reason. That was with sub-par talent at RB (given Best’s and Smith’s injuries). If LeShoure is what we think he is, we should have a good run game.
BUT I will say I love the idea of having a road grader at guard and a bigger center for sure.

I'm glad you edited your first statement with the caveat about Barry...
Because I was about to reply…UNLESS YOU’RE BARRY SANDERS! LOL.

Nope - CB or safety in later rounds
I think Berry with another year under his belt will do fine. Houston and Wright, when healthy, give us a top ten secondary.
Dom doesn’t need to be replaced this year but his replacement had better be here this year. Who ever he is he’ll need a couple of years of schooling before he can take over for Dom. It would be nice if he could play OG while he’s learning then Peterman becomes a quality backup and maybe we get a bit of running game going.
Next year we have to have a replacement for Backus. You don’t want to try to replace two guys on the line at the same time. You want to ease the people in while the older guys can still be quality backups.
We also need to find out if Culbreath, Fox and Hilliard can play. We’ve got about 2 or 3 more years before the wheels roll off this offensive line, so it can’t wait.
The secondary could use more quality depth but the starters are relatively young. Pick up someone worthwhile in the fourth or fifth who has return skills and train them up to the job.
I sure can understand wanting to put some draft resources into the position
It’s long overdue. The problem is drafting real OL help is also long overdue. What I’m wondering is how far Dre’s stock will fall given the weed arrest. Perhaps that could be the best of both worlds for us and we get a top flight OL AND a top flight CB between our first 2 picks. Besides, I’d rather have the more physical guy given both are great in coverage.

I disagree with a few things here
While I think Jenkins is a good CB most scouting reports I have read say Claiborne from LSU is the best cover corner in the draft (many feel he is a better cover corner than Patrick Peterson, but that he isn’t as big).
Second while we have not spent high round picks on O-Line yet, the strategy that I have noticed the Lions like to employ is to take the best player at a given position in the draft. At #23 if they feel that there is a player who is best at their position this year that is who I expect they will take (which to me seems like Konz is quite likely because most reports I have read have him as the #1 C in the draft). But maybe they think Jenkins is the best CB in the draft and take him. They also prefer high character guys, and that is one of the knocks on Jenkins. They also tend not to specifically try to fill needs, but just take what they believe is the most talent player (assuming they would actually have a role on our team). So, even if they think the secondary is the weakest unit, it doesn’t mean they will use a high round pick to fill the need, they have been more willing to use free agency to do that in the last few years.
Finally, while I don’t think our secondary is great, I feel that the D-Line had way more to do with us losing that game. Brees was under very little pressure that whole game and the Saints were able to convert by running on 3rd or 4th and short. It is usually up to the D-Line and LB’s to make those types of stops. We have also used much more of our resources to make the D-Line a strength, but I can’t say they had a better game than the DB’s, which to me means they under-performed more.
i don't like the idea of drafting a guy in the first round that gets caught smoking weed in parked car at the Mall
i am sorry but there is just NOOOO way anyone can convince me he is a first round pick. Talent wise 100% yes… as a person “hell to the naw”. He isn’t at florida for a reason. And though he may have cleaned us his act since… can you really look any gm in the face and say use your first round pick on him? And it isn’t just that he smoked weed. It is the manner of which he got caught on top of it.. How could anyone be that dum!!??? ..no way on Jenkins
Was just gonna say... I know he's still young, but Jenkins has done a fantastic job of scaring me off so far.

I don't care about any of that.
If all you can tell me is that this guy smoked some weed and got caught…it affects my opinion none. I would still love to have this player. I actually don’t even care what we do with our draft this year because this organization has proven themselves. I have my opinions sure but I’m not going to pay nearly the same attention (watching all of the combine, reading every scouting report and watching every video on the top 100 players) as I have in the past. I’m going to be excited for any player that we get…unless we draft another DT…then I might have some reservations lol.
He just seems like a dummy and I could definitely see him being a detriment to the franchise.
I’d rather not admonish a kid not even in the league yet, but I definitely have reservations.

Why we're you saying these things about Jimmy Smith last year?
Just saying…haha

sorry but i look at the context of each situation
Why we’re you saying these things about Jimmy Smith last year?
Just saying…haha
If you acturally looked at the Jimmy Smith situations it was different. Smith had a ARI from having a cup in his hand.. having a beer while under age ..these are 2 of his issues.
My opinion of smoking weed is one thing. But is the LACK of judgement of Jenkins smoking in public. If he popped on a test and just liked to smoke now and then that is questionable.. but to smoke it in a freaking parking lot? Come on guys that isn’t even remotely close. That shows not only a lack of judgement ( doing dope) But also doing it in a parking lot (that is just stupid).. if people acturally read what happen with Jimmy Smith and not gotten caught up in the hyperbole you could see the glaring difference.
Smith did his dirt but had a pattern showing he had cleaned up his act. Jenkins did this crap last year and had to stay another year in college to prove he could keep his nose clean.NOT to develop as a player.
Two totally and completely different sitautions.
But weren't you a Jimmy Smith supporter?

what about that cb from bama
busted with weed. think he slides any?
if we are going with character issues why not vontaze burfict?
Who cares?
Jerome Simpson got caught ordering lots of weed…would you not want him? He’s still currently 12-day champion of best of the best on ESPN.
Mayhew has not proven he'll take a playmaker regardless
He hasn’t taken a player with significant character issues. So while he will most likely consider Jenkins, I’m not sure he will pass the sniff test on character issues…Whoever is selected will be a playmaker Mayhew feels will be a good football player. That is all we know at this point IMO.
