Now that the season's done, we can do an "Awards" post
So who should win the list of NFl regular season awards this year?
MVP - Aaron Rodgers. With all due respect to Brees, Aaron Rodgers was the best quarterback in the NFL this season. Taking his team to 14 wins (he sat out the 15th), the number one seed, and a new record for QB rating does it for me.
Offensive Player of the Year - Drew Brees. He didn't just break the single season passing record, he destroyed it. Drew Brees also led the NFL in TD passes. The guy had a monster year and deserves this award.
Defensive Player of the Year - Terrell Suggs. With all due respect to the sack monsters in the NFC, no defensive player was more valuable than T-Sizzle. He showed up in big games and was a huge part in Baltimore claiming the AFC's number 2 seed. He also led the NFL in forced fumbles. The guy is a playmaker.
Offensive Rookie of the Year - Cam Newton. I like Andy Dalton, but his team won on team effort where Cam Newton carried his team in a lot of games. He had one of the best rookie seasons in history. I had my doubts, but the kid is a gamer.
Defensive Rookie of the Year - Von Miller. His rookie season was as good as Suh's rookie season, and that's high praise. He was a monster pass rusher and was very good against the run to boot. Excellent player.
Comeback Player of the Year - Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford had on the of the most prolific passing seasons in NFL history after missing most of the last two years with injuries. He's a star in the making, Detroit couldn't ask for a better young QB.
Coach of the Year - Jim Harbaugh. The 49ers were a bad team last year. They didn't make any big moves, but somehow they turned it around and earned the number two seed in the NFC. That's good coaching and it deserves an award.

Those are some great names
And although my bias may make me dis-agree with the first one
I believe the rest are right on

I agree with everything on that list
Except I could see Justin Smith, Ware, or Jared Allen be defensive player of the years.

Aaron Rodgers:
The only MVP Quarterback who apparently can’t outperform his backup

My take:
MVP – Peyton Manning. Yeah, I said it. Guy isn’t on the team and it absolutely tanks. I don’t care that they won a few games, they went from a perennial playoff team and Super Bowl contender (however weak) to the #1 pick. There’s no other choice.
Offensive Player of the Year – Aaron Rodgers. While not deserving of the MVP in any way due to the Matt Flynn experiment, he used some very questionable talent (Jordy Nelson, James Starks, a patchwork offensive line) to produce the best year by a QB ever, while playing every home game outdoors. The guy is effective as possible with what is given to him, and would be putting up stats like this pretty much anywhere, in my opinion. Too bad he’s a jerkoff.
Defensive Player of the Year – Cliff Avril. As you may or may not know, I’m not a big Cliff Avril fan, but upon actually looking at the body of work of all defensive players this year, the only player who literally did it all was Cliff Avril. His only number that wasn’t phenomenal was his tackles (36 combined), but his playmaking ability is unrivaled.
Avril placed 11th in the league in sacks with 11. He is one of 15 defensive linemen in the NFL with an interception, and one of 3 who returned it for a touchdown. The only player who exceeded him in forced fumbles was Terrell Suggs with 7 to Avril’s 6, who also was 2nd in the league in recovered fumbles, an extremely important facet of forcing them. 5th among defensive linemen with 5 pass deflections, Avril is only rivaled by Suggs in effectiveness, and though his numbers weren’t incredibly eye popping, no player in the league affected his defense like Avril did.
Offensive Rookie of the Year – Cam Newton. A rookie of the year nomination means more than just stats, it’s your effect on the league and your team, in my opinion. Newton revitalized a club and proved his critics wrong in his rookie year. I could definitely see him as another of the top 5 QBs in the league soon with Matthew Stafford. The combination of his ability to run and throw is unlike any QB in the league, and looks to be far more sustainable in the vein of Randall Cunningham than Michael Vick (this coming from a VTech fan and Vick backer).
Defensive Rookie of the Year – Von Miller. His impact is unparalled among rookies, and looks to be Demarcus Ware 2.0. Lucky Broncos.
Comeback Player of the Year – Matthew Stafford. Very little needs to be said here. Stafford took every scrutiny about him and absolutely shat on them. The year he had was completely ridiculous, and we should be thrilled to have him in Detroit for what we hope will be his entire career. Hard to believe Joey Harrington was the last guy we were hoping would help us in that way.
Coach of the Year – Sean Payton. Coach of the year goes to the coach who’s system allowed their players to shine. I think everyone wants to give the award to Jim Harbaugh, but that team was very talented before Harbaugh got there – Singletary was an AWFUL coach. A coincidence of time and circumstance allowed Harbaugh (and Alex Smith) to shine, but the team that performed better than all others was New Orleans. San Francisco’s offense was a paltry 26TH in the league in total yardage. New Orleans had the record breaker from Brees and still had the 6th best rushing offense in the league.
Sean Payton fielded the best team in the NFL this year, bar none. And we get to beat them at home to start our run to the Super Bowl.

It wasn't easy
My heart wants to go with Suggs, but like I said, Suggs’ performance is, IMO, more of a result of his defense. Avril has worked with our (unfortunately lackluster) defense all year, and stood head and shoulders above the rest.
All of that plays into my notion, however, that we will be bidding Mr. Avril a fond(ish) farewell, and be seeing him on a big market team next year.

I remember they saying that about Houston too
They have to say that about each years most popular FA. As anything else could be perceived as a slight to the player.

I hate the manning for MVP and had to stop reading your selections
I am sorry I feel that way as I get the point, but MVP is about the guys playing.
If that is the case, Barry Sanders might as well be MVP because if the Lions had him this year
I imagine we’d still be playing.

finnished reading but skipped the Manning stuff
I wouldn’t have thought of Avril but you make very good points.
Aldon Smith looks to be C Haley 2.0 and is up there with V Miller and would be very deserving of the DROY.
Payton as coach of the year… I think Schwartz and Harbaugh did as much to win that award…

My list
MVP – Matthew Stafford, No not being Bias. Show me a player with 5,000 yards, 41 TDs, 16 games played and a 97.2 QBR. I will show you Matthew Stafford with a horrid O line, No running game and a defense that was suspect at times. I will also sho you video of the comebacks Stafford led and taking a team to the playoffs for the first time in a decade. A player who rewrote franchise records and showed toughness playing with a broken finger. Rodgers an given, Brees a fantastic pick. Stafford is being overlooked. I think he deserves MVP votes this year. Knock me I don’t care I belive in my heart of hearts Stafford made a case for MVP.
Offensive Player of the year – Rob Gronkowski a tight end yup. One that pretty much owns every TE seasonal record after this year. My other option was Drew Brees.
Defensive Player of the year – torn here I am gonna go with Avril for all the reasons we have all stated. I’m also considering Jason Babin.
OROY – Andy Dalton – Sure Cam has the stats but his stats IMO aren’t so great that Andy Daltons wins don’t get overshadowed. Gotta go with the guy that led his team to the playoffs. ( Julio and AJ both considered)
DROY – Aldon Smith – I don’t care he’s not an everydown player at the end of the season he’s a bigger force that Von Miller.
Comeback player – Well Stafford is my lock here but I have him as my MVP. So I give comeback player of the year to Alex Smith. Say what you will he was a bust who is now QB of a playoff team.
Coach of the year – I split this award like the Co-Mvp. harbaugh and schwartz both get coach of the year…( they will reciver there respective awards at seperate times.

Compounding on your OPoY
Jimmy Graham has to be considered. As a rookie, Graham posted numbers that are unbelievable, and has only played football for TWO YEARS.

Graham would definitley be a consideration I agree
I think Gronk would beat him out though…just based on touchdowns

Mine:
MVP- Brees. (Unfortunately for Rodgers, Flynn’s 6 TD game made me question Rodgers as MVP)
OPOY- Calvin muttha-fuggin’ Johnson!! (I think his total domination was enough to make up for the slow weeks he had)
DPOY- Suggs.
DROY- Von
OROY- Cam (Wanted to say AJ green here but then I realized that’s just a UGA bias, lol)
Comeback- Darren Sproles
Coach – John Fox (I mean c’mon. Tebow was actually WIINING. I don’t think this guy gets enough credit. He took what he had, took a huge gamble, and it worked out.)

just wondering,, what did Sproles come back from?
by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Jan 18, 2012 2:24 PM EST up reply actions
from the last 2 years of funk in SD
I think 2008 was his last comparable year. Though I admit it wasn’t quite as good as this year.
I just thought he was all done. This year, not at all. To me, that’s a comeback.

I know he had a good year, but I always thought he did good when given opportunities
so comeback for me is Staff or A Smith- and I lean towards Staff since he did comeback from injury, where Alex Smith never really did anything to “comeback” to..
by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Jan 18, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah.
Alex Smith never did anything before this. I kinda had that problem with Stafford. He hadn’t arrived yet. How can he “comeback”?
I guess there’s kinda some melding together of “comeback player of the year” and “breakout player of the year”
I’d vote for Stafford for “breakout player of the year”
