P.O.D. open thread #1

Technically for the Lions, it's the offseason, so I figured we'd start up these offseason open threads again so people can talk about whatever they want. No talk about religion, politics, etc... and don't be a douche. Those are my only rules. Looks like the Tigers just signed Prince Fielder for *9* years...*9*. Talk about a power combo of Fielder and Miggy. Anyway, have at it, and keep it Fairley clean!

Also, rec this if you guys want it to stay around for longer.

I was wondering what the POD experts thought about Peyton's next spot...

Hope this hasn’t been discussed yet…. I’ve gone a bit. Since I grew up in Arizona, I wouldn’t mind the Cardinals somehow landing Peyton and one good receiver in FA to give Fitz a little more room to work with. It just pains me to see the horrible quality of QBs that Fitz had to work with these past couple years.

I was shaking my head at that Kolb trade.

Can the Cardinals afford to spend resources on a QB again this year?

Yea pretty much one of the dumbest trades I've ever seen....

I haven’t looked into it, I just know that sports talk in AZ is getting really excited about the opportunity, so I figured there should be a chance.

If they let Kolb go, it should free up some space and plus the only other big cap hit that I know of his Fitzgerald, who is known for renegotiating to keep or, in this case, get good players.

So, I guess the question is:

How long does Payton have?
Fitz truly is amazing and I would love to see Manning/Fitz even for just a season. But Manning also seems like he’d be pretty expensive for a guy with a questionable future. However, I guess the jury’s still out on Payton’s future and it’s sure looking like the Colts are gonna get rid of him whatever the outcome. At least according to Rob Lowe. (Has he ever been wrong about this kinda thing before?)

If Manning is cut loose, I could see him taking a huge pay cut to go where he wants to go

He is not going to go for the team that can offer him the most money. He has made all he needs. I would not be surprised to see him take top shelf back up QB money. (crazy to think about for Payton right?)

He is going to go to the team that is closest to winning now that needs stability and strength from their QB. I see two teams that fit that bill.

Arizona and Seattle. In my mind, Arizona would be the front runner but I would not be surprised to see Seattle fully in the mix.

As for how long he has left.

2 maybe 3 years of very good to elite play?

We all saw him on the sideline this last season. He was fuming. You could see the losses eating away at his soul. His passion for the game is still at an absolutely amazing level. He will be productive.

Depending on that neck. If I were Arizona or Seattle, I would take that chance in less than a heart beat.

BTW, I fully expect a decision from the irsay’s about his career in Indy long enough before training camp to give him time to find a new home. They do not seem like the kind of owners that would hold out until the last minute to limit his or other teams time to prepare for the season properly.

Agree fully

I was just looking yesterday at the Cardinals blog to see if there was much chatter about it. Answer: not much. But that was before he did his interview where it sounded a lot like he has played his last game in a Colts uniform.

Arizona has a top-five receiver, great stadium in a warm climate, and a few other nice pieces that might entice him. I could see SF dropping back a bit next year, so that is a very winnable division.

I dunno though…he may have played his last game. Bill Simmons was talking with Mike Lombardi about this issue on his podcast this week, and they both agreed that he is probably done.

It's pretty interesting

how many times Green Bay traded a back-up QB during the Favre era:
1995 – Mark Brunell
2000 – Aaron Brooks
2001 – Matt Hasselbeck
All of those turned out fairly good for the other teams, so Green Bay does have some history (albeit ancient by football standards) of developing decent QBs. On the other hand, I think GMs around the league sort of shudder when they hear the names of the two most recent backup QB trades: Kevin Kolb and Charlie Whitehurst. So, it will be interesting to see what happens with Flynn.

Two,

There is no way they can’t get a 2nd at minimum for him. There are always QB desperate teams and there always will be.

In fact, IMO, the team Flynn goes to will be QB desperate the following season too.

Seriously.

Did I say anywhere, anything about a 1st and 3rd?

I can see a team giving up a 2nd or two for him. No chance on a first but then again, I would have said the same thing about Palmer and look how that turned out.

QB’s that can win games are priceless commodities. If you have a QB on your team that destroyed a 10-5 team’s defense to finish off the season do you let him walk?

If you are a team desperate for a NFL ready upgrade at the QB position, do you give up a second and then some for him?

Recent NFL history suggests that a second and some fluff the season after would be easy to get for him.

oh, I do need to be corrected...
If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, he becomes a "non-exclusive" franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club’s offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match. The signing period for non-exclusive franchise players to sign with new clubs is March 3 through November 9 (10th week of the season).

Not sure the rules on your scenario… where a team can use the franchise tag, then accept a lesser trade offer from a club of their choice.

Nope

Jacksonville did pick a QB as the number 1 overall pick in the expansion draft, but it was Steve Beuerlein from the Arizona Cardinals. They traded their 3rd and 5th round picks in the regular draft to Green Bay for Brunell.

I dunno about Arizona...

I mean, I get the idea behind it. But didn’t they just have that with Kurt Warner? They’re one of the oldest NFL franchises and have had at best one franchise QB in their entire history… during the 70s. Isn’t it about time Arizona got serious about that position for once? I mean I know Leinart burned them but they need to get back on the horse.

As far as Peyton, I don’t know. I’m not even sure he leaves Indy this year; Irsay’s apparently been firm about not trading Peyton, that it’s something they’re just NOT going to do, and hinting that him being cut is a “health” issue… so we may yet see Peyton keep starting in Indy for a few more years. I dunno, it’ll be interesting to see unfold, certainly.

I hate to think about it

I remember Joe Montana in KC never feeling like it was right. I’d hate to see Peyton not play out his career with the blue horse shoe. What bothers be even MORE is know how Dan Snyder will throw money at a problem. Peyton as a Redskin…ugh. The Dolphins are intresting and I think you retain Henne at a cheaper price to back him up it might work. In 3 years most though Miami will be back to not having a QB of the future. Arizona they love to sign over the hill talent Pyton is great but other than a few other players he won’t have a ton to work with and the owner is known throught the league as a cheapskate. He will never be a Jet why? He just can’t I said so! NEVER NEVER NEVER. Seahawks have nothing to offer him. But how about this Jaxsonville could use someone to really help out Gabberts development. Peyton knows the divsion well really only needs a reciver or 2 ( Reggie Wayne comes with him in FA) Add in my man MJD and you might have a contender if you get a good draft class as well.

I grew up a Blue Jays fan

and remain loyal to that team.

However, it just seems like the deck is stacked against the Jays year after year. Even with an extra wild card spot, the AL just got a whole lot tougher with the Angels and Rangers stocking up talent, and the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox all in the mix. The Tigers should be a lock for their division again this year, and it is a killer line-up in the middle of the order.

Though I would have loved for Fielder to become a Jay, it is CRAZY the money that was thrown at him and the length of contract. People on the Jays boards were calculating that he basically needs to average an annual WAR of 6 to make that deal remotely good value.

How great would it be if the Tigers and Blue Jays met in the postseason?

Anybody been looking at the Lions 2012 schedule lately?

I think there was a post about it a while back, before the end of the regular season. But I think it is lining up very nicely for us.

I don’t see Chicago or Minnesota being much better than they were this year. Then to get Jacksonville, Indy, and the NFC West, it is looking like a little easier schedule than this year. I think the toughest games will be GB, Philly, Houston, and San Fransisco.

Final winning % for our opponents this year (2011 end-of-season) was .535, whereas our opponents for next season combined for a .505 winning %, and that even factors in 30 wins for GB (because we play them twice they get counted twice).

The guy had so many opportunities to do the right thing

so many damn chances….

And he blew every one of them because he did not have a single ounce of humility in his entire body. Now when the world is closing in on his delusional reality, he begins to cry about being in hell? When he has no one to blame for his situation but himself?

I just can not muster up any sort of sympathy. In my heart, I know I should but I just can’t.

No sympathy for wasted opportunity. For those who have never had an opportunity, I can definitely, but not for a guy who had the entire world in his hands.

He has alot of person problems he has hid from people for many years

Rumor has always been has depression and alot of other problems. I am not nor will ever be a T.O fan. I kinda feel for the guy actually because he’s at the point where football will be done very very very soon. I can’t see TV or coaching or front office work ever in his future. While he needs help it seems like at every opertunity he burns the bridges of the people that can help him and want to. Pretty disturbing really cause it seems like whenever you hear these storys they never end with. " He got his life back together and is now living the life he planed to retire to" I see a ESPN 30 for 30 special in Terrell Owens career and no HOF bust to show for it. Because of the way his career ended not because of what he did. He will be remembered as the guy who fell apart in the IFL broke, sad, and lonley. Not the muscular talented beast that while he ran his mouth and loved attention you couldn’t second guess his talent. This guy has some of the all time NFL records, This isn’t how you end a Hall of fame career. A pool of self pity and no money to make up for it.

Lions meet with Florida St. and Ohio St. OTs
Lions’ officials met with Florida State OT Zebrie Sanders, and Ohio State OT Mike Adams during Senior Bowl practices, Mlive.com reported. Sanders is rated the fourth-best OT in the draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. In addition, CBSSports.com’s Dane Brugler’s latest mock draft identifies Adams as a potential first-round selection
Detroit officials interviewed Michigan State CB Trenton Robinson at the Senior Bowl, Mlive.com reported. A two-time All-Big Ten honoree, Robinson made 229 tackles and nine interceptions during his college career. The secondary is Detroit’s weakest defensive unit, and many draft experts expect Detroit to select a DB in the early rounds.
Detroit’s scouts interviewed North Carolina LB Zach Brown at the Senior Bowl, Mlive.com reported. Brown made a team-leading 105 tackles during his senior season with the Tar Heels. Like current Lions free-agent LB Stephen Tulloch, Brown proved adept at beating blockers, and forced six turnovers en route to earning 2011 All-ACC honors

The Sporting News named DT Ndamukong Suh to its All-Pro team Monday. A panel of NFL executives selects the team, and said that Suh was a key factor in Detroit’s success. That assertion is surprising, since Suh made 30 fewer tackles and six fewer sacks this year than he did in his dominant rookie season
WR Calvin Johnson was named to the Sporting News All-Pro team Monday. The recognition is Johnson’s fourth 2011 postseason honor. He was previously named an AP All-Pro, a PFWA all-NFL honoree and a Pro Bowl starter. When announcing his selection, the magazine called Johnson "The league’s biggest matchup nightmare."

Completely OT

If anyone plays Modern Warfare 3, explain to me exactly what it is about a riot shield that’s cowardly. It’s the hardest frigging weapon to kill someone with in the game, and it’s glitched to heck and back. I can’t help it people don’t know how to stop me sometimes.

[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

Maybe I can help

cow·ard/ˈkouərd/Noun:
A person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things.

shield/SHēld/Noun:
A device used to protect (someone or something) from a danger, risk, or unpleasant experience.

To draw a conclusion, if a coward is one who avoids unpleasantness and a shield is used to protect from unpleasantness doesn’t it follow that a shield may be a cowardly device?
The important question is, do you lack the courage to not use the riot shield? Personally, if it pisses someone off on a video game, I tend to repeat that action purposefully. After all, what’s the point of playing a video game if someone somewhere isn’t annoyed by it?

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

Wow.

33 years in the NHL! Gordie Howe is my favorite all time. He played for both of my teams – the Wings and the Whalers.

I remember going to his restaurant when i was like 5 or 6 (30 years ago) and he had all his hockey jerseys and hockey jackets on the wall. I just remember as a 5 year old hockey player just staring and being in awe. A little kid with a gaping mouth staring at the wall. Even at that age , I knew it was something special. (Of course love for Gordie was helped along by a father who was a hardcore wings fan. lol)
