We will never get Brent Grimes

Ladarius Webb I doubt will hit FA but I’d love to have him. My favorite though is KC Brandon Carr, I say bring him home to Michigan a GVSU player. One of Guns boys maybe we can lure him away. Carr and Webb are great players who have youth on there side. Won’t come with the giant cap number Finnegan and Grimes would. I don’t like Finnegan anways so you won’t convince me of him anyways. I wouldn’t rule out a draft pick at corner though sense Mayhew pushed so hard to get Peterson last year. I think he wants his “own” guy. Mayhew being a former CB himself and a teammate of Deion Sanders I trust his eye at Corner for sure. I think he’s been a little picky at jumping at big name DBs for a reason. I’m not real concerned at saftey when healthy our guys are pretty good but if we draft one on the other hand I’d be ok with it. I do think we need a true #1 cornerback. We have assembled the best roster of #2 corners that the NFL has ever seen. Sadly that dosen’t work out to well when you don’t have a man to eliminate the best WR instead let him take advantage of a #2 corner. To me it’s the equvilant of letting Calvin Johnson be covered by the 2nd best corner on your team every week.

Sadly this draft does not contain the one corner I really think fits Detroit perfectly and fills the need as that #1 corner. HONEY BADGER

If Grimes gets out of ATL it will because he wants a bigger paycheck.

Which means we won’t get him.

He was “Avriled” last year by the Falcons. A good performer in the last year of a light contract who wanted to sign an extension but the FO made him play out his contract. He proved his worth on the field as a very good #1 CB (playing alongside a total crap big money FA in Dunta Robinson who is making 10X Grimes’ salary).

The bad thing for Grimes is that he got injured at the end of the season. He is pissed at the Falcons for how he was treated (his wife/manager called up radio shows in the area last summer to complain about the lack of an extension) and I bet he is super pissed he got hurt. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t go back to ATL out of principle, but he will end up going somewhere for some big money. I see him going to a place like Denver who have some aging DBs and will pay.

Houston and Berry did fine as the Lion's starters

I highly doubt Mayhew will make a move for a CB.

Agree.

He will probably draft a few DB’s but I don’t see a FA secondary guys.

berry embarassed himself on national tv and was a big reason we lost to the saints………..if we have the cash and dudes who work in our system (and are better than berry, which shouldnt be hard to find) we should go for it

by miblue on Jan 27, 2012 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

He embarassed himself?

How? Really, tell me how. He dropped an easy INT, but so did Wright that game. I hate the hate on Berry, at least back yourself up.

i believe he had more than one drop

by miblue on Jan 27, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Nope.

Any other thoughts? Or is dropped INT’s your only stat that you use to determine bad CB play?

At least he didnt intercept a ball after giving up huge plays and try to give the ball to the coach..Let’s not forget berry was essentially a rookie this season.

by Michael21 on Jan 27, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

He dropped 2 easy int's that game.

He doesn’t know how to turn his head to look for the ball. He can keep up with the receiver, he just never seems to make a play on the ball. Because he doesn’t get his head around he gets flagged for pass interference frequently.

I’m all for giving him more time, but the fact is that he wasn’t all that good last year.

by NewSchoolLionFan on Jan 27, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah except that he was our best rated corner this year

He wasn’t amazing, but he was consistent. I really don’t get the hate, besides the fact that he didn’t have more INT’s on the year. People seem to dismiss CB’s that don’t get INT’s for some reason. Yeah, Berry needs to work on turning his head and getting his hands up, but this was his first year playing, and everyone forgets that too. He had a +4.1 overall rating on PFF. By comparison, he had a better year than: Chris Houston, Javier Arenas, Aqib Talib, Tramon Williams, (everyone’s FA sweetheart) Brandon Carr, and Leon Hall to name a few. Yeah, he wasn’t out of this world good, but he’s the best we have, and he’s only 23.

I don't see the Lions moving for any CBs in free agency. Too expensive.

They may look at a Safety though. Tyvon Branch of Oakland? Not really crazy about any of the other guys though.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

I hope they draft one

We have a bunch of backups on the roster now. I would love an actual star.

by ATL Lion on Jan 26, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

They dont need an actual star

I mean, really, outside of Darrell Revis and Ed Reed, the contributions of most safeties on a game-to-game basis fluctuate greatly. The Lions and Mayhew know they cant just cherry pick the next Revis or pay Johnathon Joseph like he is the next one – they do the next best thing and try to bring in NFL castoffs that dont suck. The strategy has worked out okay so far – guys like Chris Houston, Aaron Berry, and mmmmaybe Alphonso Smith are decent-to-good options at corner, but unfortunately safety has been a big mess with Delmas and Spievey having poor seasons. They failed to be even average, which is all you can pretty much hope for from DBs in todays pass-happy NFL.

So I really dont mind if we never pick up an actual star. We just need people who don’t suck on a regular basis. Easier said than done.

i dont think our dbs can play with dashon

He hits everythingb hard, and I don’t know they’ll hold up to the beating

Couple of FA options that jump out at me

CB -

-William Middleton, JAX – had a remarkable year and was stout against the run and the pass.
-Brandon Carr, KC – Already mentioned. Solid cover option. Gives you some size at corner.
Dimitri Patterson, CLE – If you’re looking for a sneaky Mayhew pickup, Patterson would fit the bill. Took a lot of snaps away from Sheldon Brown late in the year and showed plus coverage skills. At 29, he’s a veteran and what you see if what you get – and what I see is a guy the Lions can trot out for less than 2 million and not be a liability in coverage.

S – Plenty of decent prospects out there. I think the Lions will be priced out of talents like Michael Griffin or Tyvon Branch, but there are players just as good like Jim Leonhard and Atari Bigby out there who provide more value with their price tags. Other names I’d be glad to see in a Lions uniform, who shouldnt burn the Ford’s pocketbook: Hussain Abdullah, Dwight Lowery, and Brodney Pool.

by Hussein Beydoun on Jan 26, 2012 5:14 PM EST reply actions

No Hussain

He can’t play plain and simple. There is a reason the Vike’s fans hate him

Dominating your opposition physically is great and all, but confounding them mentally is sooo much more fun.

2-15-DEN 44(14:36) (Shotgun) K.Moreno up the middle to DEN 47 for 3 yards (N.Suh). FUMBLES (N.Suh), RECOVERED by DET-N.Suh at DEN 47. N.Suh to DEN 47 for no gain (K.Moreno). FUMBLES (K.Moreno), recovered by DET-C.Houston at DEN 47. C.Houston to DEN 47 for no gain (O.Franklin). Denver challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was REVERSED. (Shotgun) K.Moreno up the middle to DEN 49 for 5 yards (S.Tulloch).

Taking a fans opinion

is something NFL front offices don’t do. Regardless of what Vikes fans think, Hussain was not at all horrible last season. And he certainly performed better than either Delmas or Spievey.

by kwfords on Jan 29, 2012 10:09 PM EST reply actions

We simply need depth

Berry will be fine after he learns to pick up the ball. Safety is critically important in the wide 9, so they should pick one up who’s cheap or draft one in the latter rounds to develop. I’m thinking they might get an FA safety for a one year tryout contract.

by rekar on Jan 30, 2012 1:22 AM EST reply actions

I like the idea of drafting Markelle Martin

I doubt Mark Barron will be available at 23 but if he is we should snatch him up. Martin is my 2nd favorite safety in the draft and wouldn’t mind grabbing him in the second round.

I know we all keep talking about our CB’s but if we get everyone back its not a bad group. Our depth and talent level at safety is way worse. If we dont draft either of the two above guys I’d hope we find another safety in FA.

Brandon Boykin?

I really like this kid, maybe grab him in the 2nd round
