Detroit Lions Interview Several Players At Senior Bowl

Ohio State running back Dan Herron (1) carries up the field during the Senior Bowl North Squad NCAA college football practice.

Detroit Lions scouts, coaches and front office personnel have been down in Mobile this week for the 2012 Senior Bowl. The game isn't until Saturday, but the Lions have had a chance to observe practices and get to know some of the players they may consider drafting in April.

MLive's Anwar Richardson has spoken with several players who have interviewed with the Lions this week. Just like official visits, who is interviewed doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it's always interesting to get a look at which players the Lions are talking to. Here is a list of players who have interviewed with the Lions so far:

This is by no means a complete list of players the Lions have talked to this week, but rather a small sample size of who has interviewed with the team.

One of the Draft sites had a few more names.

DraftCountdown had Audie Cole LB; Mitchell Schwartz T; Brian Quick WR; Dwight Jones WR as others who had meetings with the Lions.

I like your list of guys a hell of a lot more than this one.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

A few notes on the players interviewed:
  • RB Doug Martin is a better prospect than RB Boom Herron, but both have the skillset to play all 3 downs. Herron is deceptively strong, and keeps his feet churning through tackles. I really like Martin, however. He’s my favorite RB not named Trent Richardson.
  • C Ben Jones is ranked right up there with the top C prospects in this years draft, but Konz seems like the consensus C prize this year.
  • OT Zebrie Sanders – not watching any Senior Bowl coverage, but keep reading that he’ll need to get stronger to make it in the NFL.
  • OT Cordy Glenn – apparently he’s struggled when placed at OT, but dominated when placed at the Guard position.
  • LB Zach Brown – I’ve seen this kid mocked to the Lions at 23rd overall. Really fast, athletic LB who could start right away.
  • DB Trenton Richardson – I’d have to believe that if drafted he would only initially provide depth at the Safety position, as well as be a Special Teams guy

Wow! Bullet points!

Impressive.

I don’t want a RB this year.
At all.
We’ve used high picks the last 2 years and where did that get us?

I know we’ll probably take one, but I’d rather all our draft resources go to O-line and defense. That’s just me though. We can pick up a UDFA RB to get hurt.

Ha!

I agree with you. The idea of spending ANOTHER high draft pick on a RB isn’t very palatable. But the fact that Mayhew is checking out these guys may prove some insight on how they view the health of both Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure. And they’ve never been too confident in Kevin Smith being able to stay healthy (and his latest stint with the Lions most likely only served to solidify that belief).

I think I’m cool with any position in the 1st Round other than QB, WR, TE or DT.

I'd be interested in Herron or Martin

If we could get one of them with a late pick.. Anybody know where they’re projected as of now?

I can see Robinson being a special teams stud and a good project at safety, so I wouldn’t mind him with a late pick either.

Really early amateur speculation...

But I’m assuming Doug Martin will be drafted in the 2nd Round, potentially late 1st considering how scouts have been raving about him at the Senior Bowl. Herron will probably get drafted anywhere from the 3rd to 5th Round.

Agree

That’s a good point. I think that RB’s drafted early only occasionally pan out to become dominant players. There are so many variables that affect the stats they earned in college. Drafting into the 3-5 rounds for a RB would be fine with me.

Wonder why the interest in WR’s. Maybe it’s just for depth or in case they’re given an opportunity to get a good receiver early on..somebody that drops for some reason.

by Parrothead Mike on Jan 26, 2012 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder if the interest in WR's is both for depth and for kick/punt return?

i.e., Logan didn’t have a very good year and they want to check out a later guy who can fill that role?

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see that

part of me thinks TDY would rock for it, but then again I have high hopes for him at WR and think he might be best served to focus on that.

I think we need either a LB or OL

Cordy Glenn or Zach Brown sure would be nice!

I agree, those two are on my wish list.

Chris Rainey - Florida RB

I’d be interested in adding him if we don’t add a RB earlier. Explosive, would be a great insurance policy if Best goes down again. Can play RB, WR, & return kicks. Currently looking like a 6th – 7th round selection.

As a late draft pick, sure...

He kind’ve reminds me of Dexter McCluster in a way; maybe even Darren Sproles but that might be a stretch. A big-play type of guy who can contribute in multiple ways, but I wouldn’t think that he’d ever be used as a 3-down RB or WR. The kid is blazing fast, though. Definitely an interesting prospect. Gotta look up a little more about him.

What is our pick worth in trade value?

I mean would Mayhew take for it, and what would we have to package with it to move into the top 10?

"I like to win all the time, so all the time I play with myself."

by seabeeruss on Jan 27, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

We’d have to trade our first four picks this year (#23 in first, second, third, and fourth) to trade up to pick #10 on the dot. Into the top ten and we’re trading next year’s (high) picks most assuredly, and since following year picks are usually valued a round later it starts getting prohibitively expensive.
