Good stuff
You are right on with your observations. Stafford will get his due next year.
Picking on Tebow is way too easy, at this point.
THAT BEING SAID, the fact that ESPN actually dedicated an entire segment of programming to the validity of him going to the Pro-Bowl is beyond any comprehension or shred of reason I can possibly come to.
His talents, or lack thereof, have been well documented by now. He’s barely better than Rex Grossman, if that. And yet here we are, nearly a full three weeks after his team was blown right out of the playoffs, and we’re STILL hearing about him. Simply unbelievable that such a mediocre player could attract this kind of media attention; just imagine how bad it would be if he played for the Cowboys, and actually lead them to a playoff spot. I don’t think I could stomach a single dose of NFL media again.
AFC vs NFC seemed to be a problem this year
I think I saw the same segment as you did, and the thing that jumped off the screen at me was how terrible AFC QBs not named Tom Brady were compared to the NFC elite this year. Brady was over 5000, Eli close. Both of them aren’t playing because of the Super Bowl. That leaves them with Rapelesbeurger, Rivers, and Andy Dalton. Rivers had the best season of the three with around 4600 yds, 27 tds, 20 int. That simply isn’t gonna cut it in a sane selection of Pro Bowl NFC qbs where Eli, Aaron Rodgers, Brees and Stafford were all right around 5000 yards. That Romo or Cam Newton was mentioned is kind of a joke, but that is a different issue.
What I see in this case is that the passers in the NFC were a lot better than in the AFC. So Tebow making it in the other conference may not be as big of a shock as Stafford not making it in the NFC. Tebow made plays with his legs (you do have to give him that), and those plays don’t show up well in the qb stats. I would definitely say he is not as good a qb as Stafford or any of the other NFC elite, but he may be more deserving than many of the mediocre AFC qbs.
You have to keep his competition in mind. Seriously, who would you put in his place for the AFC? The number 4-8 qb leaders for yards in the AFC were (descending order) 4-Ryan Fitzpatrick (!), Flacco, Matt Hasselbeck, Mark Sanchez, Andy Dalton. None of those guys hit 4000 yards, and Sanchez was the leader among them with 26 tds.
This leads me to a question: are AFC pass defenses just that much better? or is their conference almost completely devoid of qb talent outside of Brady, Peyton and Matt Schuab? With the other two injured, the AFC became a one horse race for qbs.
NP half nails it.
The other half of the issue is that the Pro Bowl is basically a popularity contest. There is no formula for which player(s) should be invited based on their performance.
At one point late in the season I heard that Tebow was the most popular athlete in the US based on some poll that had just been done by ESPN [of course, that figures].

So, if the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest not based on performance, why would Tebow not be made the starter for the AFC over Brady, even if Brady was playing?
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
players and coaches count for 2/3 of the vote

"Some people watch adult videos on their computer. I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That's what gets me aroused." ~Jim Schwartz
Uh-huh, but that does not mean they don't vote for reasons other than performance.

The Probowlers should be in the top 5 of 2-3 categories per the position
and then let the fans vote for the starters.

Biggest complaint by me is
That it’s called the Popularity Bowl not Pro Bowl anymore. If it was about the best of the best being there then Cam Newton would not have been inserted over Stafford who THREW for more than 5000 yrds, unlike Cam who RAN for almost as much as he threw. 1 QB took a franchise to the Playoffs and one took a team to almost mediocrity. Popularity Bowl like I said.
How many lumps you want Doc?
I view what Cam did to be on par with what Staff did
ducks rotten fruit
Seriously, in his rookie year on a team in transition he blew up some records and took a terrible team farther than anyone thought he could. Sure he didn’t pass for 5k or throw 40+ TDs, but he ran for a record number and threw for a record number (for rookie QBs). He deserves a nod.
The Probowl is BS. I watched a couple minutes of that crappy ass two hand touch game and if not for wishing my team’s players got a free trip to Hawaii, I would say I hope they all skip it to reduce any wear and tear on them. Schumacher isn’t taking his F1 car out to buy groceries. Let people overlook the Lions for one more season. We will let them know their mistake when we are in the playoffs.
