Officials have cost the Lions more than a couple of wins this season

(Sorry if this post is not spaced. I have had a lot of problems with formatting on this site) I can't for the life of me understand why the Lions have always gotten the short end of the stick when it came to calls. I took some backlash earlier this season when I posted about how the officials working the Niners game cost us the game. While I admit I was wrong about one of the plays during that game, I stand by the rest of my comments. I broke my own cardinal rule by not waiting at least 24 hours before posting after an emotional loss. (especially with handshake gate). While I still agree with most of my previous post I think it came off as a little whiny. Check that. It was whiny. Maybe this one is whiny also but what happened yesterday was absolutely atrocious. Not only were the Lions victim to a 14 point swing that went GB's way, but also to the numerous drive killers, or lack thereof. It was pointed out in another post earlier today that the NFL does not hire officials full time. Seriously? How in the hell can the biggest, richest, most popular sport in North America not have elite officiating? Could someone please explain the logic in that to me? Anyone? If we get decent officiating in those two games right now we are 12-4 and going to New York to face the Giants in the wildcard game. What we got was "piss poor officiating" (to quote a previous poster) and now have to go to New Orleans to take on the hottest team in the NFL. Don't get me wrong guys. I could not be more excited about what this team has done this year. I could not be more excited about Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. I could not be more excited about the coaching staff. I just wish I was excited to know that we don't have to beat the Saints and the refs on Saturday. Right now I honestly don't think that any team in the League could beat both. Especially not in New Orleans. I'm just sick of it guys. I'm not one of these fans who blames everything and everyone but the team after a loss. I'm just tired of getting robbed out of a couple of games every season. Usually those games are of no consequence. This time they were. If we lose a game I want it to be becuase we lost it. I realize that as long as i'm a fan of the Lions that probably will never happen. What's funny is that Schwartz will be fined heavily for his comments about the officials. Even though he is 100% correct. Guess what happens to the refs that just screwed a team out of a much easier road the superbowl? Not one damn thing.

I am not sure if I am agreeing or disagreeing with you

I am just going off the title of this as I have no patience to read it. But I am going to guess I am agreeing by being the first to say this…While I realize all fans complain about officiating we definately have lost games this year as a result…BUT…in the playoffs officials tend to “let them play” a lot more and not influence the game as much which could definately work to our advantage. We have a better chance of beating New Orleans in the playoffs than we did the week after Suh stomped that dude and the officials called 3 offensive interference penalties on Burleson. And if Titus, Pettigrew and Logan don’t kill us with stupidity this week, we have a better than 50% chance of beating the Saints.

It's pronounced "en-DOM-ah-ken", but you can call me Kenny.

We also won a game thanks to the officials

I.E.-Vikings.Yes it sucks and the titus young touchdown was straight horseshit. But remove that vikings win and your at 9-7 for the season and no play-off’s.

by Michael21 on Jan 3, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

The Lions would still be the 6 seed at 9-7

No non-playoff team in the NFC had a winning record.

by jammitch! on Jan 3, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

If you're going to remove a win because of the refs

you have to give us the games taken away from us by the refs. We’re what then? 11-5? 12-4?

Unfortunately that's not how it work's

I was thinkin’ more like 1 for 1.Every game is going to have it’s flaws because no one is perfect. Do I think that ref’s should be held more accountable…eh probably. But, it’s not going to happen. The league has yet to fix a game due to bad officiating and I don’t see it happening anytime soon.Just make’s that phrase “any given sunday” even more credible.

by Michael21 on Jan 4, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

But its games like the Green Bay game that makes that phrase lose credibility

My aunt (who is a Chargers fan, and lived in Green Bay for several years) was watching the game with us, and after the muffed fair catch she commented that with officiating this bad people were going to start thinking the league is fixing games. I kind of agree with her, after watching the NFL darlings get so many calls going there way, it would be easy to believe that competition in football is about as real as in professional wrestling.

Not much point in us showing up, eh?

Inside of that sentiment lies the key to beating you guys. Your o’er reaching arrogance and pomposity. You guys should certainly spend all week getting ready to play the 9ers. We arent even worthy of a team meeting

Good luck with that "better then 50% chance of beating the Saints"

Really if he of said 40% or 45% or even 50%
But no one in this league has a “beter then 50% chance of beating the Saints” in the Superdome

Ahh, I see

Well, you guys are miserably tough to beat in your place, no two ways about that.

The increase in offensive production after Fairley left the game.

I can agree that the Lions have less of a chance to win than the Saints.

So by definition, I figure that means less than 50%. The Lions do have a chance to win the game, but they will have to play their best game of the season to do it. If the Saints get the same kind of game that the Lions brought against the San Diego Chargers, then it could get real interesting.

I don't recall any games that the refs cost us, let alone more than two.

A couple does mean two, right?

And by the way, they do monitor the refs through the year. This performance could cost these guys a playoff game. Supposedly, only the best officials get to work in the playoffs. But then, I have seen some other horrible officiating in the NFL this year.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

SHEESH...

It should cost them more than aplayoff game!…lol….

Yes, I agree CLF.

I don’t believe I have ever heard of refs being fired for consistently poor officiating. There are a few officials around who are living proof that it does not occur.

I'm sorry but the refs didn't lose us that game

They sure as hell didn’t help, and they were bad, but damnit can we just be honest and admit that our defense lost us this last game? Flynn looked all-pro out there.

by JWurm on Jan 3, 2012 2:32 PM EST reply actions

agree and dissagree

the defence was straight ASS but there was a lot of blown calls that cost us.
But the most important was the titus touchdown no touchdown (sound familler) we had to to kick a field goal and ended loseing by 4 if they count that worest case senerio is OT thats my bigest probelm with the game

Do not forget the Nelson muffed punt that also cost us a TD

That was not a catch. The ball was lose and the closest two players were both lions and it was not even close. That was a ST TD 9 times out of 10 if the Refs called it correctly. Hell, it was a TD if they had just called it consistently like they had in other lose ball situations in this game (hello Chef and Logan “fumbles”)

The bias was bleeding from the refs pores this game.

But yeah, our D absolutely STUNK IT UP. Did we really miss CWill that much. I have always loved his game but damn man. Is he really that much of a beast?

Yeah, our Defense played like shit

When I was listening on the radio, they keep talking about how the Lions keep getting held and the officials were not calling it at all. Don’t know if anybody watching the game on TV can verify this at all.

Also, I watched the first Packers game on Thanksgiving and the Saints game on Sunday Night. Something I remember from both those games, we held Rodgers and Brees in the first quarter, first half making it a tight game. What I also remember is both those teams started getting some calls in their favor that either extended their drives or stalled our drives when we were on offense.

And that has been just so frustrating this year. I’m not saying that there isn’t other teams out their that get dicked with calls, I can’t watch every game and frequent other team’s blogs. All I know is Lions games this year.

Another thing off topic is, when watching these Lions games I know how well Stafford played and the throws he was able to make. Which the rest of the nation can’t really take notice from just watching ESPN highlights and looking at the box score. Looking at just the bottom line you can see the 16 INTs and that kind of throws you off. There is no asterisk for receivers losing the ball, missing the catch, dropping the ball as well as maybe slipping.

by mhout005 on Jan 3, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, the holding by the Packer offense was very bad.

It was pretty much every single play and the refs decided not to call it, so the Packers kept doing it. I can’t blame the Packers at all. The suckiness of the refs in entirely on the refs.

Listen to the Two Bro's Talk podcast!

by TuffLynx on Jan 3, 2012 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

You can never fully blame on the Refs,

the Defense stunk it up is all especially in the last game, it needs those important stops w/ out the mental errors that have helped force collapses in games such as the Saints, and Packers the first time.

However I will say Ive watched a lot of games and the Saints and Packers are two teams that have gotten some favorable calls and this last one the Refs did blow the game, but theres nothing to do about it so you take it as a loss knowing you accomplished staying right w/ them and move on.

Id say the Lions actually had one other play which was a TD and it was overlooked by Refs and Coaches. The Scheffler at the goal line catch where he slid but didnt get in. The player pushed him as he went to the ground before having control of the catch afterwards no GB player touched him while he was down after catch was made (control of ball) as he walked in after getting up. I know w/ no challenges he couldnt have challenged it but im sure off of technicality of rules thats a TD.

The Ref's are either ignorant idiots or they're just plain bought off.

That may sound harsh or childish or however you want to look at it, but something isn’t quite right when a clear touchdown by Titus is called not a touchdown, or after slo-mo replay of a fumble call by the ref’s showing Logan clearly down but reaffirmed a fumble.
“WHAT!! uh. ok?
Nah man, I ain’t freakin’ buyin’ it.
This ain’t no “Greenbay thing” or any other NFL “team thing”. Sorry man. This is about an organization within the NFL that has absolutely no accountability what so ever for there incompetence.
These kind of penalties or non-penalties are “NOT” just limited to the Lions. Every game week in and week out from every game played in the NFL, have these type of idiotic calls. It would almost seem that there is some kind of favoritism here, maybe? NAAAHHH…
I think simply said, the stupidity and incompetence of these ref’s is an abortion and a scar to the definition of fair play and a honest hard played game.
Are they bought? I truly refuse to think so, but this shit is getting really weird. Does an investigation need to take place? What ever. I just want a fair game!!!
Believe me I understand, man. The fine print on the back of an NFL ticket say’s that it’s for “Entertainment Purposes only”.
But this does not excuse the incompetence of the officiating… no it doesn’t.

Easy,The Officials supplement their income by running a pool for the most erroneous call/non-call they can pulloff on the Lions.

Oh brother.

Every time the Lions lose, somebody puts up a “we’re getting screwed by the refs” post.

I know it’s frustrating, but it happens all the time to every team and it will continue to happen. That’s because refs are people. People with biases and imperfect senses. Dudes are gonna miss calls. and dudes are gonna see things a bit differently. As I see it, the better team (more wins) in general gets the calls. I don’t see any conspiracy for this, I think it is a natural bias that is created because the better team is expected to be… well, better. For examples, see the 2nd Vikings game, or this most recent GB game. We’ve had this both ways, guys.

I can forgive bad calls. And I’m not gonna sit here and get pissed because of the Titus Young (non)TD because there was PLENTY of time left. (of course we all know, if there was less than 2:00 left, that would’ve been a booth review and most likely a TD, but I digress). This is a hump (I suppose a few different meanings of that word apply) we need to get over.

Getting mad at holding calls and getting mad at pass interference calls is something that I too have been struggling with. This is because IMO they are the two most inconsistently called penalties in the game. That’s because they happen pretty much every play. I got into it with a Saints fan regarding Nate’s 3 PI’s and his point was that Nate pushed off. I don’t disagree with that. He did. BUT when it isn’t called on anybody (him included) all year, it is ridiculous to pin 3 on him in one game. Unless of course the refs are gonna start calling ALL offensive PI’s which of course didn’t happen in that game, nor will it ever happen in this offense friendly league. However, I’m not gonna say the refs lost the game for us.

Bottom line:
I’m as frustrated with the officiating as you guys, but saying the refs are the reason for a “L” is a cop out.
It’s not fair, it’s just the way it is.
It’s just another obstacle the Lions need to overcome.
