Lions Game Ball Of The Week: Matthew Stafford
Part two of the final Detroit Lions game ball of the regular season features Matthew Stafford. Like Calvin Johnson, Stafford has been on a roll as of late, and he put up some monster numbers on Sunday in Green Bay. This is why, for the third week in a row, Stafford is a recipient of a Lions game ball.
On Sunday in Green Bay, Stafford went 36-of-59 and threw for 520 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a quarterback rating of 103.8 and made several amazing throws during the game. I think he silenced all the questions about if he can play in the cold weather, because it didn't seem to bother him at all.
For the season, Stafford finished with 5,038 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. The passing yards total was good enough for fifth all-time in the NFL, behind Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Dan Marino and Brees again.
To say the least, Stafford showed how good he can be this season. When you consider that this was his first full season in the NFL, the future looks very promising for not only Stafford, but the Lions as well.

THE PHONZ ~ I LOVE THAT GUY
PCP 4 LIFE
If he continues to play at this level
Then the only team that will even have a prayer of beating the Lions will be the Packers.
Flag
Penalty. Will find some stupid reason for all posts in favor of the lions because we “referees” are scared shitless of you lions and your fans. Just sayin.

Personal Foul
Unnecessary criticism of the officials by a Lions fan.
Penalty: the Lions will automatically start the game down two touchdowns.
Objection
I think that penalty is just wrong. What else you gonna do. Make it fourth quarter now?? Lol. The sad thing is that I was only able to hear the 3rd quarter on my drive home from KY. I got home in enough time to watch the last 5 min.

I was just reading comments on Yahoo about this coming game
Everybody is just putting down the Lions so badly and not even giving them a chance. I admit this is going to be a tough game, but it’s going to be close, win or lose. We have a lot of people back for this game which makes me even more excited. Go Lions!
Yahoo
The only thing yahoo offers that is good is POD. As far as yahoo bloggers go: 50% racist, 25% uneducated, and 25% “normal.”

There's a good reason for it.
It’s because the Lions have found ways to screw themselves with untimely penalties, turnovers, and dropped passes.
All of you who want to blame it all on the refs are just delusional. Go watch some other NFL games and learn the truth.
No slogans. Just win!!!
Who is blaming it all on the refs?
They got fucked in the Packers game and everyone knows it, including that shit bag Walt Coleman who is the worst official in the league. They also got the shaft in the first Saints game and it was blatant. We’ll talk about whatever the fuck we want to. Go elsewhere to talk trash about the Lions.
Agreed.
That game was ridiculously bad with regard to the refereeing.
NFL rule change
Something along the lines if Suh looks at another player cross eyed it will be a major personal foul.

Not to mention first game without Suh.
No slogans. Just win!!!
Tough qb born in Texas, this has worked out in Detroit before...
way before my time.
Hell of a year for Stafford and welcome back to the playoffs Lions’ fans. Should be a shootout in the dome. Sue could make a big difference from the first game and hope the Oline can keep him from crashing into the backfield. Go Saints!

Thanks mjtig, I agree about a lot of points being scored.
I am not a big fan of that type of football, but the way Stafford and Calvin are playing I think I better get used to it.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
yeah, I grew up watching Saints with run heavy, ball-controlled offenses with Morten Anderson kicking field goals and emphasis on defense of late-80's and 90's...
with the Saints not always being successful with that style during that time but it was part of the identity of the Saints franchise—tough guys and I liked it even when we did not do so well. Once Brees got here though and we got some good receivers, it made a lot of sense to change things up. Not that they don’t run it well, but it is more like what the 49ers used to do to us with a refined passing attack led by qb’s who knew how to work through their progressions and sneaky power running added in there more than you remember.
I hate the 9ers to this day and they are not even in our division anymore (OK, well I don’t hate them, but I don’t like them all that much either) for losing to them over and over often times with it coming to the end of the game and you knew Montana or Young would drive down and beat the Saints after a valiant effort. Last year, we did it to them and it was nice.

What I remember the most about the Saints from back then
Was the 4 probowl linebackers in Sam Mills, Vaughn, Pat Swilling, and Jackson. These guys were relentless and were voted #1 linebacking corps of all time on NFL Network for good reason.
I tell you what, I never thought in a million years the Seahawks would beat the Saints last year, but they did. If the Lions do win Saturday, this would be the second straight first round exit after winning the superbowl for them. 10.5 point underdogs sounds like a lot of motivation to beat an elite team like the Saints in the playoffs with a full deck this time around.
From 0-16 to the Superbowl baby!

Yeah, if you are in the playoffs, you are good or at least can beat anyone in the playoffs...
and I don’t care if you backed in or whatever. I remember back in ‘87, the Saints were 12-3 and the Vikings backed in at 8-7. The Vikings beat the crap out of us like 44-10 or something like that and last year the Seahawks beat us. The lean years have humbled me so I take nothing for granted and no wins are ugly. Lions are playing well going into it and will be a tough to beat. The Dome Patrol was something else. Ricky Jackson is my favorite old Saint and I’m happy he deservedly got in the HOF.

Stafford playing at an elite level
and our D-line doing something for once, is all we need to give the Saints a run for their money.

Look at Staffords stats if you remove the 3 games he played with a broken index finger on his throwing hand.
63.2%, 4098 yards, 7.9 YPA, 34 TD’s and 7 INT’s in 13 games as a 23 year old. Based on 16 healthy games he’d have 5,043 yards, 42 TD’s with only 9 INT’s.
Playing with injuries are part of the game.
Please note that while playing with the glove Stafford still threw for over 300 yards per game and seven TDs. Yes, the INTs went way up, but again he was playing from behind a lot in those games and pretty much had to throw.
The games in question are Chicago II, Carolina, and Green Bay I, right?
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
Yeah, those are the games
I’m not saying completely discount the stats, but I can’t see any QB being as effective with a splint on their index finger of their throwing hand plus a glove.
love the attitude. he always has appeared to love the pressure
"Win, I mean that is what people are judged by this time of year," Stafford said. "The fun thing for me is that this offense, a lot of it is on me being able to throw the ball around and that is awesome. I would rather have it that way than go out there and throw eight passes in a game and have us win. It is fun to go out there and sling it around and see what happens."
I like the subtle cut on Tebow
