We never should have been there in the first place...

I've taken some shit this year for some of my posts regarding the NFl's officiating ( or lack thereof) this season. I'll probably take a little for this post too. I thought last week's GB game was the worst job of officiating I have ever seen in a game. Well, maybe it was for a week because last night took the cake. Hell, it took the bakery. To tell you the truth I don't even really know what to say anymore. My gf who know's absolutely zero about football even kept saying "are they allowed to do that?" in regards to the numerous non holding calls. The sack, fumble recovery was one of the most ridiculous plays I have ever fucking seen. It was such an obvious fumble that they did not even review the fucking play! Our guy scoops up the ball, runs wide open to the end zone when they blow it dead. As soon as the guy comes back and hands the ball over they immediately change the call to a fumble. Well no shit Sherlock. His arm never even came close to coming forward. Let's not mention the countless horrible spots on 3rd down. Not to mention the fact that Fairley swatted the ball out of Brees' hands when he was still on top of his o lineman on one of those sneaks and they immediately blew it dead. At 21 to 7 that game is completely different than what it ended up being. Could the Saints have beaten us without the refs robbing us? Yes, they could. Could the Lions have won that game if not for the officials? You bet your ass they could. Sadly, we will never fucking know which would of happened.

Damn, I hit post before I was done with my bitch fit!

It is just beyond me how these officials continuously get away with these kinds of games. (and please no one give me the “they don’t get to officiate the playoffs bullshit.” How about a fucking game check or a suspension? There is only one explanation. The NFL is in on it. I know, I know. I’m now the “it’s a conspiracy” guy. To tell you the truth I don’t give a shit. If you are so naive to believe that the NFL does not sway the outcomes of games than I envy you because you know what they say, right? Ignorance is bliss. So thank you NFL for making the day that I have waited so eagerly for for the last 13 fucking years of my life to be one of the worst sporting experieces of my life.

All that said I am so proud of this team for what they have accomplished this season. I could not be more proud right now to be a Detroit Lions fan. I would also like to say thanks to all members of the pod for helping make this a season to rememeber. It was great to come here all year and be able to talk Lions football with some knowledgeable fans. We may not always see eye to eye on things but we are all Lions fans and I have mad respect for each and everyone of you guys who help make the pod the best Lions blog on the planet. Finally, good year and GO LIONS!!!!!!

That facemask..

(while it certainly DID happen) Occurred after the ball was loose. The penalty happened after the ball was fumbled. I can’t argue with the non-call, but the ball was out.. Could someone more educated than myself clarify what the correct official rule on the field would be, considering this fact?

by abnerman on Jan 9, 2012 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

it is still a penalty

and should have resulted in a dead ball. Because the ball had not been recovered when the whistle should have been blown the ball would revert to the team that had the ball before penalty happened. That would result in the Vikings having the ball back, 1/2 the distance to the goal from the previous spot and one un-timed play.

Even if that were called

And even if they punched it in the next play, we still make the playoffs at 9-7 as no other non-division winner had a winning record.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only games that would have knocked us out if we lost them were the Cowboys and Bears games.

Yea some bad calls got called, the fumble probably was the worst

But we also dropped at least two INT’s Schwartz said three but I only saw two

I think the defense did alright in my view, we stopped them on 4th down a few times but the freakin A-holes just kept going for it. Probably a smart move knowing how well our offense was rolling last night.

Also didn’t CJ drop a couple passes

I think next year will be alot different, also think alot of players will come to Detroit to play for us. Stafford looks to be the legit next Pro Bowler and think alot of people will want to be part of this team…

I agree with you but we have to overcome those calls to get "above the fray".

All the bad calls are against teams who are traditionally better than us. For some reason refs call it like that, like “Jordan Rules”. We don’t get slaughtered with bad calls against KC, Minnesota, Tampa, Denver, and the like. It’s against GB NO Atlanta and similarly perceived teams. I don’t know if it is intentional or prejudice skews the refs judgement, but it IS REAL.

The Lions will get there, not only by being good but also by the NFL deciding they...

have very positive commodities in Stafford and Johnson. The refs will get the message not to shit on the Lions because Stafford and CJ are becoming highly popular. Stafford and CJ are going to get the NFL’s golden halo, just like Brees, Brady, the Packers, and anyone named Manning.

Yes, we have to overcome the calls to win anyway.

If there is some kind of effort to tip games toward the better teams, then the only way to defeat it is to become one of the better teams. When the Lions can win games even when the refs are trying to prevent it, then they will start getting the benefit of the calls too. The refs and the league will only go so far to decide the games. Once you have become good enough to defeat their manipulations they are forced to give you the calls to avoid looking stupid or blatantly biased. The Lions are already approaching that point. They just need to take one more step forward and they will be there.

What do you think of the 4th and short, Brees sneak....

Where he extended the ball over the goal line, but then brought it right back into him. I really didn’t get that play or call. Haven’t really heard much about it at all. That’s not forward progress is it?

by mhout005 on Jan 9, 2012 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

The instant any part of the ball touches the plane of the goal, it's a TD and the play is over.

not talking about a TD though

on that play when he brought the ball back THAT was where it should be spotted

by nuftjedi on Jan 9, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Well in his post he says "the goal line" so I'm assuming he's talking about a TD.

except Brees never snuck in a TD

saying 4th and short and Brees sneak pretty much narrowed it down to one play.

by nuftjedi on Jan 10, 2012 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I don't remember all of the Saints' TDs, there were so many.

Sadly the Lions won’t get the benefit of the doubt until they start to win consistently. The refs give teams like NO or GB a little extra slack because they perceive their players to be better and not prone to making mistakes or penalties. The game is so fast the refs can’t help but assume certain outcomes based on the players/teams involved. I agree that the refs were terrible last night. The lions have to fight through and overcome, win games next year and continue to take respect. Then we’ll start getting the calls we deserve.

If we're playing the woulda coulda game

how about the extra 5 yards the refs gave the 49ers in that game.
