Lions Free Agency (Players to go after?)

Possible Players!!!

Star-divide

A look at some players the Lions could pursue in the 2012 offseason!

D-Backs

Cortland Finnegan (TEN) - Finnegan has been a top 10 corner for much of his career. He's strong in run support and solid in coverage. Played under Schwartz in Tennessee.

Terrell Thomas (NYG) - Thomas was an above average number two cornerback prior to suffering a season-ending injury. Physical Corner, if recovered, he could be a solid pickup

Brandon Carr (KC) - Carr was a potential breakout player and the Chiefs were poised to have one of the best cornerback tandems in the league. He struggled this season, but he will be looking for a rebound!

Richard Marshall (ARZ), Kelly Jennings (CIN), Rashean Mathis (JAC)

SAFETYS

Michael Griffin (TEN) - Michael Griffin, who has gone from being Pro Bowl caliber to below average and back up again. Still, when he plays hot, the whole defense plays a lot better! Another player who was under Schwartz.

Tyvon Branch (OAK) -Solid Strong Safety, physical

Gerald Sensabaugh (DAL)- Another solid safety, does get beat at times, but makes up for it'

Brodney Pool (NYJ), Thomas DeCoud (ATL)

LINEBACKERS

Jarret Johnson (BAL)- Very solid and underrated, fits perfectly with the Lions D

E.J. Henderson (MIN) - Henderson had become one of the most underrated backers in the league, Very solid, and getting up there in age. Maybe looking for a team that has a chance to win in the next few years!

Erin Henderson (MIN)- Brother of EJ, did a decent job this year starting next to his brother and would maybe follow haha!

Wesley Woodyard (DEN), Quentin Groves (OAK)

O-Line

Demetrius Bell (BUF) - OT - Bell is another under-the-radar player, very capable of protecting Staffords blindside, if backus is not brought back.

Dan Connolly (NE) - OG- Solid Guard, never hurts having a guy that can do this either http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufkHymQEuqc

Levi Brown (ARZ) - OT- Another solid tackle, started 16 games this season for the cardinals.

Deuce Lutui (ARZ) - OG, Casey Wiegmann (KC) - OC

Just an early look at some possible players, let me know your opinions!

Me

I really like Pool personally. He has the size I am looking for SS. As for CBs I would love to have Thomas and Carr. Getting those 3 would be perfect FA signing IMHO. That would mean we could get rid of half of our secondary like that. Like I said in my quick note on Baligan show today our DBs are on 1 and 2 year deals. We can get rid of them very easy.

by MisterEK on Jan 9, 2012 6:21 PM EST reply actions

EXACTLY

I would perfer Griffen, finnegan and Thomas. But that would be high $, Carr, Pool and Thomas wouldn’t be bad at all! Also we would probably cut, mcdonald, berry(maybe), Alphonso(even though i love him :/) keep Houston, Wright and Delmas and maybe harris

by HDT_42 on Jan 9, 2012 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

I like those 3

having a lineman who can return kicks wouldn’t be bad either lol but those 3 are my top fav’s

by rom3o on Jan 9, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

We don't need another SS

We don’t runa scheme that requires a SS and both Spievey and Delmas have strengths more tailored to that part of the game. We need a real rangy guy with some ball skills.

The boys are back in town!

Thank You!!!

Im not sure how many people realize that the lions def scheme is htis way. Are safties are fine and we dont need to spend any big bucks there. We do need to find a CB and a LB. Either do this through FA or the draft.

by BennieBladesFan on Jan 10, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

agreed!

The safety talk is crazy if you ask me. I hope Mayhew sees this as well. We need another solid corner (which will cost us but it is nessesary) and I am a little torn at the LB spot. I think what we have is solid but would be even more solid if they were not so concerned with getting back into coverage against elite passing teams. I think I would turn my attention from LB to the O-Line and get some run blockers.

by IowaLion on Jan 11, 2012 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

All tho

DeCoud would be a beast next to Delmas and behind carr and thomas with either houston and wright in the slot.

by rom3o on Jan 9, 2012 6:51 PM EST reply actions

Yes

I like thomas decoud 2, I also 4got about jim lehonard! From jets! And yes dan Connoley isn’t a bad player at all and he is obviously very athletic!

by HDT_42 on Jan 9, 2012 7:34 PM EST reply actions

I don't want any big name free agents

Just draft well, bring in some potential in camp bodies in UDFA rookies, and add a quality veteran or two at a good value if needed. We cant afford to go heavy into free agency. Just retaining Tulloch and Avril would be big IMO.

Tulloch, Avril.... and Durant.

I’m a big fan of his… His speed, and tackling ability(except for the Playoff game) is solid.

Personally, I don’t see the need for any Free agents other than the ones we need to sign. The Lions have an array of talent in CB that a couple draft picks would do nicely. Houston and Wright are decent quality corners… Berry is a decent nickel… Phonz is good for Dime….

Its time to draft a kid with multiple skill sets… Tall, Big, excellent in the return game… oh yeah, he can play CB or Safety too.

Logan has to be shown the door this year. He did nothing this year…. not one TD. (that I remember).

http://twitter.com/#!/rumbulls

by CLF on Jan 10, 2012 7:38 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure about Logan

Logan is on such a cheaper contract..that I dont see them parting ways with him. For some reason, I see Phonz and Macdonald out of the door. If they trade up and get one of the top 5 CBs, the Lions are set at the DB positions…I was afraid Wright might create cap issues if we have to sign him for a longer deal. But there is a good chance he will sign another year or may be a cheaper 2-3 year deal. Remember his one year deal was for 3+ millions.

The focus should still be on O Line. A franchise LOT and a decent center like Mike Brewster will go a long way in setting us up for future.

by MotownMauler on Jan 10, 2012 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

very true

we don’t have the cash this year for that!

The boys are back in town!

by rames on Jan 10, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

I like Avril, but I just do not think we can resign him

.A few days ago I did not think it would be an issue on resigning him, but my thinking is has done a 180 degree turn.

My guess is he would rather play for any team that is willing to give him 12-13 million per year for 5 or 6 years than to play for a team that most of us on POD think is a contender. I do believe that Cliff is going for the massive contract and if Detroit is willing to match the offer he’ll stay.

I cannot see the Lions signing both Tulloch and Avril and it would be much tougher to find a replacement for Tulloch than it is going to be to replace Avril.

A lot of people around here have been feeling this way about him for a long while man

I hope we are wrong. I love Avril (no homo). I just can’t get over the fact that he has not been extended yet. The Lions are not cheap. They pay market value plus in most instances. I really believe Avril thinks he is better than he really is.

It could get even worse.

Lets just say the Lions win the Superbowl in the next 2-3 years. Well now you have a SB winning quarterback who’s contract is expiring and he’d only be 26 years old. MM is going to have to make some pretty tough decisions the next few years.

Backus is at 6 million this year

If we replace him, that is 6 million toward his replacement.

Calvin could and should take a number around or under the Fitz contract. That is around 15 mil a year. Anything more and I say sign and trade him.

Higher in possible peak salary year money including all contract incentives?

I must admit I mostly slept through Contract Law when I was in school.

How about you draw up the terms and we’ll see if it meets my stipulations

When you are writing this up, please include:

The size of the box and there should be some guaranteed freshness policy.

The donuts must be considered a common brand such (but not limited to) Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton or Krispy Kreme. In the event the winner does not have a franchise donut shop within a 5 (five) mile radius of their residence, a local baker could be used, provided that the total price of the said "box of donuts" does not excite the average value of a common brand donut as stated above.

After all is is high stakes! Lol :)

I like Michael Griffin and Brandon Carr

Physically and in terms of what he can do, he’s a similar player to Louis Delmas, and would be a good fit in Schwartz’s scheme of interchangeable fast athletic safeties who can run and hit. Schwartz did good things in Tennessee as the Titan’s DC with Griffin and Chris Hope as his twin safeties, and I expect Schwartz could get good production out of Griffin again paired with Delmas.

Brandon Carr is a guy to watch. He has size, speed, and awareness, and can cover. I like him!

I might also want to take a look at Deuce Lutui.

I'm ok with Wright and Houston being the starting corners

I thought they did a pretty good job it was just the backups that were abused. If we don’t sign Wright back I think we need to get Finnegan or draft someone because we just don’t have depth at that position.

I wouldn’t sign Avril for the money he wants and think that money could be better spent elsewhere. We need to re-sign Tullouch though without him our LB’s would be in trouble.

I also think Speivey gets one more year and if he doesn’t improve he needs to be replaced. Anyway thats just my two cents about what we should do.

by RedeemedLions on Jan 10, 2012 5:01 PM EST reply actions

Voted LB

Depth at LB should improve. CBs are acceptable, and with Berry, they should be better. Hopefully, Doug Hogue can contribute next year, but I think the dropoff at LB was one of the biggest reasons we suffered when injuries were happening.

Given the Lions cap situation...

I do not expect the Lions to make any big free agent signings this season. The only significant move I could see in free agency would be for the Lions to sign a middle tier defensive end to replace Cliff Avril if they believe they are going to lose him. In that case they will target somebody young with the potential to find some upside in the Lions defensive line. They would need to be a speed rusher like Avril, but I would prefer that they are better at setting the corner on runs.

I believe the Lions will prefer to keep the cornerbacks they have rather than bringing in somebody else. As long as they can reach an understanding with Eric Wright he will stay in Detroit. He defiitelyplayed well enough to earn the chance to stay. Yes, he struggled a bit after his groin injury, but that is mroe a case where the Lions had to play him because their backups were not good. If the Lions could have afforded to shut Wright down for a few weeks and let him heal, he would have been much better late in the season.

A free agent move to replace Jeff Backus is possible, especially given that he is starting to get hurt a lot. It is probably time for Backus to play a lesser role in order to extend his career. I do believe that Jason Fox has one more chance to step into the left tackle position for the Lions. This will be a watershed season for Fox. If he gets hurt again, I am pretty sure the Lions will move on as they did with Jordan Dizon. For this reason, I do not expect the Lions to sign a free agent offensive tackle to start. They will try to split time between Fox and Backus next season. Backus will probably get the starts to keep his streak alive, but we will see a lot of Fox in 2012.
