Well not really. I am not going to sit here and pretend to be an all knowing football fan and that I can tell you all what is wrong with the Lions and how to fix it. What I am going to is give my opinion on this whole thing and what I see.
First off why are the coaches the only ones being blamed? Megatron (love him and hes a great player) gets a free pass for dropping a TD that he had in his hands. Sure he took a big hit but thats what he gets paid to do is catch the friggin ball. That was not the only ball he dropped yesterday either. Pettigrew also drops a sure TD in the back of the end zone and all we do is seemingly point fingers at the coaches. Not the coaches fault that back to back plays should be TD"s on 2 passes that are easy catches for both of those guys. We blame the coaches yet we lead the league in dropped passes. Is that the coaches or the players? The players are open, the ball gets to them and they drop it. That is on the players plain and simple. The plays that have been called have been due to what our offence has been given. When you look at a two deep safety coverage scheme you cant just throw it deep to Calvin all game. Sure I agree we could do that a few more times but if teams are just floating safeties 15-20 yards off the line in the pre snap look still think its a good idea to throw deep all the time? We tried two yesterday and one we got a PI call to our benefit and the other was almost picked off. We cant just throw it to CJ all day every day. We need some other players to step up and make some plays. Again players make the plays not the coaches.
4th and goal (if I remember correctly) and the Vikingsthrow their only blitz at us and the QB thinks its getting picked up on the backside but because of a mis-communication on the field its Stafford that is on his backside. Again on the players or the coaches? The players have to know how to recognize a blitz and pick it up. This is something that is learned at the beginning levels of football and as the players make it to the NFL they should be well versed in the ability to see a blitz and pick it up.
Not that I really want to get in to the Special Teams aspect because it is just a disaster right now. Everyone keeps pointing the fingers at Crossman but if you go back and watch the last 4 return TD's I think you will notice two similar things on each return. Guys not staying in their lanes and missed tackles. I dont know about you but after watching this team for 20 some years I have never witnessed a group of players who seemingly can't tackle anything. We make every return guy look like Barry Sanders and not to mention how many tackles AP broke yeterday. Is this on the coaches too? Our supposed NFL calibre players should be able to tackle by now and if not then we are in for a world of hurt over the next 12 games if they dont shore up that aspect of the game.
I am not giving the coaches a free pass either just so you know but I am getting really sick of the constant its the coaches its the coaches BS. Its a team game that is either won by the team or lost by the team. All three phases need to step up and contribute and that is the bottom line. The players seem to think its on them from their comments and I tend to believe them. When multiple players say its not the scheme we just need to execute better I tend to understand that. I am sure that I will catch some flak for my thoughts and thats fine with me.
