Former Lion Alex Karras dying of kidney failure

Brace Hemmelgarn-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Alex Karras, who played defensive tackle for the Lions from 1958-1962 and 1964-1970, is dying of kidney failure.

Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alex Karras, who is also known for his acting and time in the Monday Night Football booth, is dying of kidney failure. The sad news came out earlier this week, and the Associated Press is reporting that Karras has been released from a hospital in California to "spend his final days with family."

The AP spoke with Karras' attorney, who provided some details on Karras' declining health.

"He may be dying of kidney failure because now his body is catching up to the deterioration of his mind," Craig Mitnick, Karras' attorney in a lawsuit against the NFL, told The Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon.

Karras has also suffered from dementia and cancer in recent years, according to the Free Press.

Karras played for the Lions from 1958-1962 and 1964-1970 after being drafted 10th overall out of Iowa. He made the Pro Bowl four times and was named to the 1960s All-Decade NFL team.
