Football question from Thursday night

I have to laugh at the stories of gamblers and fantasy football players who are upset with JH and the Niners for taking points off the board. I think it was the right thing to do, but I am a little confused about one thing.

Folks mention that the Seahawks could have attempted an onside kick, but I thought it was a free kick after a safety. I've never seen a free kick kicked as an onside kick. Is this even possible?

as a dsiclaimer, I stopped believing in gambling on NFL games when Peyton Manning led a comeback from way down versus Tampa Bay, and I stopped playing fantasy football when my thoughts would turn to hoping a starting rb would go down with an injury so his back up could get the touchdown. It just made me root for all the wrong stuff. Well, I think that's enough to make this a post.
