Just as we praise this group of Lions, we must also blame them. I am not implying they aren't capable of righting the ship, but they are responsible for the "here and now". Unfortunately, the "here and now" isn't so pretty.
They put the team together, they put the other coaches together. They are ultimately responsible for what happens from week to week even though their actions may have been days, weeks, months and even years ago.
Pettigrew is a great example. I don't blame Pettigrew for being Pettigrew. He is who he is. Pretty good all around TE that has focus issues. FO and HC picked him in the first round and have put much of the offense's fate in his hands. I thought it was BAD idea then and I still do. But to blame Pettigrew is just wrong. I like Pettigrew and is a pretty good Lion, but he was a 1st rounder. The HC and FO's philosophy believed that a TE is worth a 1st round pick. I think that is very unlikely that you can get a TE with first round value. There are a few in the league, but IMO a very risky choice. After they decided their offense could revolve around a TE enough to draft one in the first round they had to think Pettigrew himself was worth it. That is a decision we have been paying for ever since. Sure he can make big plays, but I don't see a picture of Brandon and think, this guy is money. They did.
Safeties is another issue. We have heard our HC and FO opinions on the safety position. I whole heartily disagree with their philosophy of the smaller more athletic safety being the future. It is why they haven't had a good/healthy pair of safeties. It IS why our D gets torched most of the time. I don't blame Delmas, Coleman or any other safety for being on the team. They are forced to do things their bodies can't withstand. Why does Delmas dive at the legs and often whiff? Because he HAS to. He realized in his first year taking on a big back, WR or TE is not a good idea with his frame. That is the hand he was dealt and he does what he can. But to put Coleman or another smaller Safety out there with him is just irresponsible in my book. Why have I been a big propnent of seeing what Silva has? Because we NEED his size and strength back there.
I don't blame Jonte Green for being in WAY over his head on Special Teams. Coaches put him there before he was ready. I am not sure he will EVER be ready but the HC anf FO drafted him, and played him. Two BIG mistakes.
These are just a couple of things I think are wrong with the Lions lately. Some of them have been problems for a while and others are new. But they aren't HUGE problems and Schwartz and the Front Office have made the team better.
HC and FO are also the only people that can make changes, so to blame the others is futile.
