Calvin Johnson closing in on Jerry Rice's receiving record

USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is on the verge of breaking Jerry Rice's single-season receiving record.

Although the Detroit Lions were an absolute mess last Sunday, especially on offense, wide receiver Calvin Johnson still managed to have a good game. Actually, he was really the only player on offense who did much of anything, and he finished Sunday's game with 10 catches for 121 yards. This performance kept him on pace to break Jerry Rice's single-season receiving record.

With two weeks left in the season, Johnson is only 182 yards away from breaking Rice's receiving record. Johnson currently has 1,667 yards receiving this season, putting Rice's record of 1,848 yards well within reach. Johnson only needs to average 91 yards receiving a game in the final two weeks of the season to break Rice's record.

Hitting 2,000 yards receiving will require quite a bit more work. Johnson is 333 yards away from 2,000, meaning he needs to average around 167 yards a game in the final two weeks to hit that mark. That seems unlikely, but as long as Johnson gets to 1,849 yards and breaks Rice's record, everything after will simply be the icing on the cake for an outstanding season for Megatron.

There's no doubt that 2012 will be remembered for the Lions' disappointing record, but at least Johnson is keeping things interesting as the regular season starts to wind down.
