Calvin Johnson turns attention to 2,000 yards receiving

USA TODAY Sports

With Jerry Rice's record already broken, Calvin Johnson can turn his attention to getting 2,000 yards receiving.

Going into Week 16, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson needed only 182 yards receiving to break Jerry Rice's single-season record. Johnson went well beyond that on Saturday night, recording 225 yards on 11 catches. He now stands atop the list of the best seasons for yards receiving in NFL history with a total of 1,892 yards through 15 games.

With only one week left, Johnson can now focus on a new goal: breaking the 2,000 yards mark. No receiver in NFL history has gained 2,000 yards receiving, but Johnson needs only 108 yards on Sunday against the Chicago Bears to do just that. Not only is this achievement within reach, but based on what Johnson has done as of late, he may come close to hitting 2,000 yards in the first half.

Here's a look at the amazing numbers Johnson has put up through 15 games this season:

Receiving
G Rec Yds Y/G AVG Lng TD
15 117 1892 126.1 16.2 53 5

I personally like Mike O'Hara's idea for Johnson to go for 2,053 yards receiving. That, of course, is how many yards rushing Barry Sanders had in 1997. Obviously simply getting to 2,000 is the top priority for personal stats next Sunday, but going beyond that would really be a nice way to end the season.
