2013 Detroit Lions - Roster/Free Agents

QB - All 3 are under contract for next season. No moves need to be made to upgrade position in the offseason, especially given what QB's are in the draft this year. RB - LeShoure and Best are under contract for the next 2 years, although Best will probably never play another down in the league. Joique Bell is an RFA, and he will definitely be brought back. Kevin Smith is a UFA, and though I could see him being brought back for depth, I don't know why the Lions would do that, since they don't appear to have any interest in playing him. I would like to see another running back that falls to the mid rounds be added to the mix since Best won't be available to help out. I am giving LeShoure one more year to be fair, before I completely give up on his ability to break long runs. But so far it doesn't look good. Stefan Logan is a free agent, and definitely wont be brought back next year. He has been the worst return man in the league the past 2 years, and should have been release before the 2011 season after the rules were changed on kickoffs. It rendered him useless. And I can't understand for the life of me why he played at all last year or this year. Trust me, nobody will pick him up! WR - With Calvin Johnson around it doesn't really matter who the other receivers are, the passing game will be one of the best in the league again. Thank God that he is under contract through 2019. I think Ryan Broyles will be an excellent #2, but who knows how long he will be out next year. Burleson is under contract for 2 more years, and if Young were going to be on the team, or Broyles were healthy I would say the Lions would let him go given his salary amount. But now, I can't see any possible way they cut him loose. Titus Young is currently under contract for 2 more years, but he will be released shortly after the season. Mike Thomas is under contract for 3 more years, and is due a roster bonus of $3.5 million on 3/16. It's hard for me to imagine the Lions not releasing Thomas after the season. He will be overpriced to just return kicks/punts. He has to be able to add something to the passing game in order to stick around at his current salary. He couldn't manage to do that in Jacksonville, and so far it doesn't appear he can do it here either. The Lions can add a good return man at a cheaper rate in the draft, or go with another option they have on the roster. Brian Robiskie is under contract for another year, and he may get the chance to stick around at $715,000 unless they decide to add a receiver in the draft. Kassim Osgood is a free agent, and unless I am missing something related to his production during games, I don't see any reason they would want to bring him back next year. Kris Durham is an exclusive rights free agent, and I could see him added to the practice squad again. But given how poorly he has looked in the last 3 games, I don't believe he belongs on an NFL roster. That's great that he and Stafford were roommates, and if Stafford wants to continue to send him money great! But he shouldn't be earning it on our roster. TE - Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler are both under contract for 1 more season, and I think they should both be back. Although I could see Scheffler being let go in a salary cap move to save a couple million. Will Heller is a UFA, and I don't know why the Lions keep bringing him back. Maybe because nobody else wants him, and he is a cheap backup. K - Jason Hanson is a UFA. He hasn't decided yet whether he wants to retire or not. He has been one of the few bright spots on the team. And given the fact that he is still as accurate as he is, I hope he returns for at least one more season. P - Nick Harris is a UFA. He is atrocious. Why the Lions brought him back is beyond me. Maybe because he is the Lions all time leader in the number of punts, and punting yardag. That is the only thing I can think of. Letting him add to the record book a little. He has to be replaced. Either by a rookie, or bringing back other ex Lions. I would rather see Ben Graham, or Ryan Donahue. Whatever happened to him? DT - Ndamukong Suh is under contract for 3 more years, and Nick Fairley is under contract for 2 more years. They are both first round picks, and I believe it's time to see what they can do as a starting tandem playing all game long. Corey Williams is a UFA, and he has been great. But with our salary cap issues, we can simply no longer afford him. I will miss him, but it's time to see what the 1st rounders can do! Andre Fluellen and Sammie Lee Hill are both free agents, and I think Fluellen will be back. But to be honest with you, I don't think either of these guys are that great, and whichever one can be had for cheaper is the one I want brought back. The Lions added Ogembi Nwagbuo late in the year, and he is signed through next year. So he should be able to fill the other backup spot. No need to draft another DT this year, until we find out what Suh and Fairley are capable of side by side for a full season. DE - Cliff Avril is a free agent again, and the Lions would be stupid to franchise him again. It's time to let him walk. He was so not worth what the Lions paid him this year. Kyle VanDen Bosch is under contract for one more year, but a lot of people speculate that he will be let go given the $5.5 salary he will be owed, and the lack of production this year. I could see that as well, unless his locker room presence, and leadership is enough to keep him around, and I think it just may be. I could see his production picking up with a quality end being drafted in the first round. If he is released however, that puts the Lions in quite a predicament, and could definitely determine how the Lions go in the first round of the draft. Willie Young is a RFA, and I see the Lions bringing him back and giving him every chance to be a full time starter. Lawrence Jackson is a free agent, and speculation is that there is no way he will be brought back. However, I'm not sure how much interest he will draw from other teams. Personally, I would love to see him brought back, and see what he can do with a lot more playing time. Ronnell Lewis is under contract for 3 more years, and we should get to see him a little more next year. LB - Stephen Tulloch signed a contract before last season, and is under contract for 4 more years. Justin Durant and DeAndre Levy are both free agents. I would definitely like to see Durant brought back. And if Levy can be brought back for a decent price as well, I wouldn't mind having him back. But they will probably only be able to bring one of the two back. Tahir Whitehead is under contract for 3 more years. Ashlee Palmer is a free agent. The only reason he may be brought back is for special teams. Although there are better options available in free agency for that. Travis Lewis is under contract for 3 more years, and hopefully we get to see a little more of him next season. CB - Chris Houston is a free agent. And the Lions have to find a way to bring him back! I also believe that regardless of what happens to the DE position in the offseason, CB has to be where they go in the first round. Bill Bentley and Jonte Green both have 3 years left on their contract, and I hope to see plenty of them next year, but I still think it is time to get a shutdown corner in the 1st round. I can't remember ever having that. And it would be great to have several good corners on the team, instead of just 1. Jacob Lacey is a free agent and won't be brought back. Drayton Florence is a free agent, and I could see him coming back for another year. Ron Bartell has another year on his contract, but honestly I don't see him or Pat Lee being on the opening day roster next year. Especially after the draft. S - Louis Delmas is a free agent, and I hope there isn't a ton of interest from other teams, and the Lions can bring him back for one more last shot at staying healthy for a year. Amari Spievey, Ricardo Silva, and Don Carey are all RFA's, and I would like to see them all back. I think we will be busy handling DE, LB, and CB in free agency and the draft, and I don't see much change happening at the safety position. It can be worked on next year if we still need it. John Wendling and Tyrell Johnson both have a year on their contracts. I believe Wendling will be back, and Johnson won't. C - Dominc Raiola has another year left on his contract. He could be released, but I doubt it. He probably won't be replaced until he becomes a free agent. Dylan Gandy is a free agent, and may be back. Don Muhlbach is a free agent, and I am sure he will be brought back as the long snapper. G -Rob Sims has 2 more years on his contract, and Stephen Peterman has one more year on his. T - Riley Reiff has 3 more years on his contract, and should be a conisistent starter next year. Jeff Backus has one more year on his contract, and it will probably be his last. Gosder Cherilus is a free agent, and I see no reason why he needs to be brought back, other than the Lions failure to admit they missed on him. Jason Fox is a RFA, and should be brought back for another season. Corey Hilliard is a free agent and may be brought back if no other teams show interest in him.
