It is now official: The Detroit Lions hold the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
By losing to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the Detroit Lions clinched a top-five pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Going into the day, there was still a possibility that they could move up to the top four or even the top three, but that didn't end up happening since both the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles lost on Sunday. As a result, the Lions finished in a three-way tie with those two teams, and since they have the toughest strength of schedule of the group, they own the fifth overall pick.
Here's a look at the updated top five of the 2013 NFL Draft order:
1. Kansas City Chiefs - 2-14
2. Jacksonville Jaguars - 2-14
3. Oakland Raiders - 4-12
4. Philadelphia Eagles - 4-12
5. Detroit Lions - 4-12
The obvious upside of such a bad season is that the Lions will have a chance to pick one of the top players in the 2013 NFL Draft. Also, depending on how the quarterback situation around the league and in the draft shakes out, the Lions could find themselves in a situation where trading down for picks makes sense.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the Lions once again in a familiar spot -- high up in the draft order.
